Thanks to you all for your patience and interest but I give up for now. I'm sorry but the last tip for removing my anti virus is one step too far for my taste [;)] I've run hundreds of games for years without problems, with various anti virus and I refuse to uninstall such a useful program, just to have an hypothetical chance to play this game alone. I don't want to seem rude or something but by my book it's your job to code a patch that'll correct such a malfunction with your program, not mine to put my whole system at risk with such a hazardous behavior. I'll wait for the next patches and hope they'll solve the issue or I'll shelve this game for good.

Yeah, I don't feel comfortable leaving my entire PC unprotected for the sake of one game, either. I'm just going to wait a few more days and hope they can patch the issue, before I finally contact Matrix/Slitherine and start seeking a refund for the game.

Just to be certain I've done the following before giving up : Under WinXP I've launched Acronis True Image's Try and Decide sand box application and while running I removed Avast completely, then ran Pandora both in Release and Beta mode. Here are the logs from that session demonstrating Avast isn't the culprit ! Sorry but there's apparently something else at stake here [8|]

I'm really sorry you can't get it to work, but from our experience these errors have always been caused by system configuration (installed programs and so on). In fact in the beta a user had the exact same error which we traced to Panda Antivirus. If we manage to identify which program (and which version of it) is at fault and can reproduce it, we could _maybe_ do something about it, but as it stands we haven't even been able to reproduce it -- I tested the free version of ZoneAlarm and Avast today and they both work fine on my system. Unfortunately we cannot test every possible system configuration (not even every version of every antivirus on every operating system). And even if we could, it is not very likely we could do a lot about it if they simply decide to interfere with our game. Especially annoying when they still do nasty things even when disabled. I can assure you other programs have issues with this as well and it's not unique to Pandora. If you check Blizzard or Steam, they have sections dedicated to this. Sadly, the only suggestion I can give you right now is to bring it up with the software companies who produce the conflicting software.

And I'm not saying this without checking everything I could think of and analyzing our code. Believe me I'm more annoyed than you. But as it stands only a tiny minority is having these issues, which also suggests it's something specific to the system configuration.

I updated the Beta with newer libs, some more debug info and minor tweaks, just in case that helps. We'll keep monitoring it and do our best. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

I've tried installing the game on my work laptop and it works. My laptop uses the same Windows OS, same firewall/antivirus (ZoneAlarm) and other periphery programs. The main difference is the hardware; my laptop has a different manufacturer, video card, etc.

I'm not a professional programmer or anything, but since my laptop has inferior power (CPU, RAM, hard drive space, etc), that suggests it can't be a lack of system specs causing the issue. Nor is it purely a program (antivirus) conflict since the game ran fine with the same version of ZoneAlarm running normally; I didn't need to shut it down or disable it for the game to run. I suspect it may have something to do with specific drivers, or video cards, or CPU threading, or the like. Something hardware-based, since that's the only real difference between my two computers.

I hope this can help you narrow down your search into finding the cause of this problem, for what it's worth.
