From the Air Unit info screen I clicked on the Pilots and that screen listed all of the pilots in the unit. One was shown in red, which means his plane is under repair. There was as *, also in red, next to his rank. What does this denote?

A pilot with an * by it is also the unit commander.

I thik the pilot is in red because he is the commander and you cannot remove him (in reserve pool, training command etc.) unless you choose another commander.
