Apocal -> [DONE] New Scenario: USN ASW Exercise 2006 (working title) (11/18/2013 3:34:34 AM)

quote:

Enterprise Strike Group vs. Orange Forces

Date/Time: 04 MAY 2006 / 2100 ZULU

Location: Eastern Seaboard, USA

Playable Sides: United States Navy

Description
With the growing threat of diesel-electric submarines in coastal and littoral waters, anti-submarine training began to take a higher priority in the new century. Using ships, sensors and systems largely designed for finding Soviet blue-water nuclear submarines, the US Navy sets about filling the technical gaps with tactical know-how before the next-generation of anti-submarine technology comes online.

The battlefield may be different, but the mission remains the same: find the subs, protect the shipping.

My first scenario for CMANO. Very loosely based on a exercise I participated during pre-deployment workups. Its fairly straight-forward and possibly a bit on the easy side of things, so I'm looking for feedback in that regard.

Looks interesting, will have to give it a shot when I can...

Hi Apocal

Im trying it out, but i cant seem to get my choppers to drop sonobuoys, i have them assigned to ASW patrols?

Interesting so far. Challenging. I tried it out once and gave up after I killed two subs but lost about half-a-dozen merchants. Ouch. :)

One suggestion...maybe give all the merchants names? Because the ships are all so generic, when one gets hit, you don't even know where to look if the attack took place while you were looking at the New York area, but the attack took place to the south and it's outside the part of the map that is visible. If you know the Black Countess is coming out of New York and she gets hit, you have a better idea of where the attacker might be.

Plus, it will make things feel more "real" to people, I think. Even if it's just things like Evelina and Texaco Ambition, it makes the ships more individual.

Anyway, I'll keep at it. It looks good so far. Thanks for writing it.

Mark

I did my testing in build 442 so I'm not sure if the behavior is the same in the latest build, but my helos dropped sonobuoys when set to ASW patrol and seemed to prefer dipping sonar for ASW strike. Could this possibly be your issue? This behavior might have been changed because helos very quickly run out of sonobuoys dropping them without a contact in their patrol area.

As a quick fix either way the [ and ] keys allow you to manually drop buoys.

Done. This post should have the updated version attached.

Thank you for the feedback.

I think the scenario is pretty much finished by fine balancing so, for people who have tested the scenario, did you find it too difficult? Too easy?

Apocal -> RE: New Scenario: USN ASW Exercise 2006 (working title) (1/2/2014 10:11:36 PM)

OK, this should be the final version, barring any drastic game-breaking issues cropping up:
1) rebalanced scoring
2) revised briefing
3) fixed minor issue with missions
4) made Orange Republic submarines playable, briefing, USN AI missions, etc.

I think playing on the sub side does a fantastic job of showing the disadvantages inherent in diesel-electric submarines operating in the littorals, outside of their well known strong points.

I downloaded your scenario, and look forward to trying it, but I have a question that perhaps you can answer. What I'm trying to figure out is if there is a way to automate the dropping of sonobuoys, rather than having to manually drop them all the time? I keep thinking there must be a way, if not there should be a way. Thanks

ASW patrol missions work for me in that regard. The AI will make a screen using less capable passive buoys first, then use active buoys to firm up unknown contacts while waiting on ID.
