Hi all,

Hmm. Ugly and alive, or pretty and dead . . .

Encircled -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/26/2013 1:51:43 PM)

It looks like its capsized already!

CT Grognard -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/26/2013 5:01:42 PM)

Fact is often stranger than fiction.

The future is now!

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/26/2013 5:43:08 PM)

Expensive... and not BMD capable [;)]

JocMeister -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/26/2013 5:50:50 PM)

Looks like a MASSIVE sub! [:D]

Not a pretty ship.

LoBaron -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/26/2013 8:17:30 PM)

Who the heck is/was Zumwalt? Pretty weird follow up for Admiral Arleigh Burke...
Was he a WWII DD skipper as well?

"The lead ship and class are named in honor of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt Jr., who served as chief of naval operations from 1970-1974. "

And yeah, she wil win no beauty pagents.

An interesting guy. I had a chance to talk with him for about an hour just before his passing.

crsutton -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/27/2013 12:47:46 AM)

Looks like a Civil War era ram.

Remember that movie where the natives bought F-16s with their oil money and rolled them down hills at each other? You could be more correct than you realize.

geofflambert -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/27/2013 1:09:05 AM)

Could be a drug smuggler though. It's number is one kilo, after all.

Thanks Steve! Interesting guy for sure. Are there any easy to access details on his actions at Leyte Gulf besides the book?

Symon -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/27/2013 3:33:17 PM)

Zumwalt was a great man. I was serving when he became CNO and remember some of his Z-grams. Some of them left me a bit cold, at the time, but have had, what I consider, a significant and positive effect on the terms and conditions of military service, upon reflection. I didn’t get it then, but I sure as hell get it now.

He was one of those “fundamental” CNOs. Even though I’m an Army puke, I think honoring him with a ship class is good. He deserves it. RIP Elmo Russell. You are remembered.

Ciao. JWE

offenseman -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/27/2013 6:44:00 PM)

Unfortunately the class was downsized and I believe they are building three. I would love to know more about the gun on it. Seems like a modern pocket battleship of sorts with a range to support ground ops from further than Short ranged SSM can operate.

castor troy -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/28/2013 6:57:04 AM)

what is the Navy going to do with that ship class? Launching some cruise missiles? Everytime I see the cost of ships I wonder if a couple of aircraft couldn't do the same perhaps better and far cheaper. Of course you need a ship to carry those aircraft around the world but what about this destroyer?

The original use for the class was to be a "land attack destroyer". While planes are more economical that missiles, the loss of pilots terrify politicians , who want a "bloodless strike" (at least on their side). Missiles can't be taken prisoner or hostage (nor drones, hence their popularity). Instead these ships will be used more for "advanced prototype research". They have the largest electrical generation capability of any ship their size so they are intended to receive some form of electromagnetic weapon in the future , rather it be laser or rail-gun has not yet been made public. Maybe both. They have done a similar role for the Seawolf class submarines, also cut down to just 3. Whatever they do with the Zumwalt. I'm certain in will be interesting. [:)]

Terminus -> RE: First Zumwalt Class Destroyer Launched (11/28/2013 10:46:34 PM)

The Zumwalt is a descendant of the arsenal ship concept of the mid- to late-90s. Nowadays, time has probably overtaken this idea.

The most interesting aspect of it is the hull shape. We haven't seen a tumblehome warship for a century.

Give me a Fletcher. I want something that looks mean.

I'll take the radar cross-section of a Boston Whaler, thanks. Looks are over-rated where survivability is concerned. If this ship works as designed nothing she fights is ever going to see her.

Or of a submarine... [:D]
