DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/19/2014 10:28:16 PM)

Allied reinforcements for Sep/Oct 43 (with 2 Commonwealth pilots missing off the edge of the scrollable screen)

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/19/2014 10:31:03 PM)

And finally global control at the start of Sep/Oct 1943. Its true that in a two-player game any Allied player who'd made that many stuff-ups and gotten into this position would probably have thrown in the towel now. But I'm finding it fun to keep going and to see how it plays out, improbable and unbelievable though it may seem. At this point I'm thinking that the Allies' best hope might be to try to take out Japan, which isn't really doing that well.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:44:48 PM)

The Allies get the initiative in September and the US has a carrier group that stayed at sea. Their carrier aircraft swoop down on Truk. Heavy AA fire shoots down one of the strike aircraft.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:45:38 PM)

The TBF gets through and damages Zuiho

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:47:16 PM)

There's yet another big naval battle in the Solomons. The US gets the surprise points again.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:48:01 PM)

They win the air battle

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:48:46 PM)

And they damage the light carrier Chiyoda and the cruiser Aoba.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:50:59 PM)

Seeing the large amount of reinforcements just arrived for the Kriegsmarine, the RN with some USN help have prepared a little surprise party for the Germans in the North Sea. There's only one problem; the weather has turned foul. With no advantage in the air, the now massive German fleet puts to sea. They decide to send the subs in also, and overwhelm the British fleet.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:52:15 PM)

The Kriegsmarine get the surprise points...

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:54:22 PM)

The mistake I made here was in increasing the column; the Germans should have gone for 'choose target'.
Nonetheless the damage bill is extensive. The Portuguese destroyer flotilla, which had only just entered the war, is summarily blown out of the water, as are the Kenya and Vincennes, with two other RN cruisers damaged.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:55:39 PM)

The Germans use their cheaper and replaceable submarines to take the losses and get incredibly lucky; no sub is lost, although three are damaged.
Unsurprisingly the RN flees the North Sea.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:56:57 PM)

The US launch another port attack, this time on Rabaul.
A Japanese carrier in the Marianas launches an intercept mission and they are blown from the sky by the Hellcats.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:58:03 PM)

Again the Japanese AA fire is devastating and another US carrier plane is shot down

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 9:59:05 PM)

The surviving US plane heads on in and sink the Hiryu, a small measure of revenge for Pearl Harbor.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/21/2014 10:00:09 PM)

In Central Asia, the Russians have had to abandon Samarkand and are now surrounding Tashkent.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 1:46:15 AM)

The US built an offensive chit recently and decide to use it to break the deadlock in Nth Africa

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 1:53:16 AM)

Both sides send every aircraft they can for ground support.
But the green American pilots are no match for the veteran Axis pilots (OK just making up excuses here) and they are all blown out of the sky, for the loss of two Axis planes. The US forces get no ground support but the Italian troops get Stukas aplenty

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 1:54:31 AM)

Unsurprisingly the attack fails.
The US are lucky to only lose a MOT division.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 1:57:06 AM)

The Germans also built an offensive chit, and they use it on a super-combined impulse; it is clear weather everywhere and that might be the last for some time, so it seems like a good idea.
In the North Sea, transports loaded with the Wehrmacht's Marine Corps put to sea. What are they planning?

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 1:58:51 AM)

The Germans launch a massive wave of strategic bombers at the United Kingdom.
All but the attackers at Glasgow have FW-190 escorts.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:00:22 AM)

The Typhoons don't cover themselves with glory; faced with equal odds they not only clear the Heinkel bombers but get blown out of the sky by the Focke-Wulfs.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:01:51 AM)

At Glasgow the pathfinder Ju-88S' are shot down by the Mosquitoes, but their high defensive rating is enough to abort the interceptors, and the Ju-290's get through to their targets.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:03:47 AM)

Over Manchester the P-51Bs fail to stop the Heinkels but for no losses, and in most other cities the bombers hit their targets.
The Commonwealth lose 8 production points in total!

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:07:20 AM)

Over Sverdlovsk the LaGG-3 fighters shoot down the Fw-190's but are aborted. The Stukas go in, but only disorganize one unit.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:09:06 AM)

Rommel moves east of the Urals and other German armour units head towards Novosibirsk, their final goal.
Guderian prepares to finish off Sverdlovsk.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:11:25 AM)

The German marines land at Scapa Flow! The aim: to make life more difficult for the RN and to sink the aborted US cruisers there.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:13:45 AM)

The attack on Sverdlovsk goes in with plenty of air support available too.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:15:14 AM)

Von Bock attacks towards Tashkent but only destroys one of the defenders.

DQ2004 -> RE: DQ2004's AAR #2 - "Ouch. ...that hurt" (1/22/2014 2:16:30 AM)

Sverdlovsk, unsurprisingly, falls. Just Tashkent and Novosibirsk stand in the way of German conquest.
