Astyreal -> About the bugs ... (12/1/2013 1:56:42 PM)

I caveat this email by admitting that I am in the initial stages of learning this beautiful monster.

I have been tempted several times to wax poetic about the craftsmanship evident in all aspects of the work. Everything about the game that I have experienced, such as the manuals, the attention to detail (how many historical notes?), the thoughtfulness of the tutorials, the interface, screams quality.

The only thing that has me concerned about my planned investment of time is the growing bug list, and the iffy Netplay.

So I wonder: is it realistic to expect that over the next months we can expect the one man development team to be able to tackle this extremely large bughunting project. I know the futures plans are quite ambitious as well, with additional optional rules and expansions expected, but I would wager that for most, having a rock-solid 'basic' version is worth locking the feature set for the time being.

Thoughts?

For me I think most of the things known as confirmed bugs are not game killers....at least for new users which I think is 99% of everyone on here so far. Meaning that the bugs will need to be addressed at some point for solid game play but with the scale of learning to use its not a game killer right now as the bugs do not stop you from learning the game, getting up to speed with how things are supposed to work and having fun. Fun is subjective for sure, but for me the learning experience so far has been a big part of the after purchase satisfaction.

I'm sure bugs when found and if documented correctly will get fixed especially the bugs that would be game killers........based on the scale of things (time so far spent) I think the dev has too much invested to just let it go if he stays healthy

Plus there have been 4 updates already with a 5th due next week. So I think that shows how a one person developer can respond to eliminating bugs as quickly as possible [:)]

Also I have not found anything that was show stopping in my play so far. Annoying, yes, critical no as far as non-netplay goes. Matrix released the game knowing that there were Netplay bugs and let everyone know upfront that this was an issue prior to release. These are getting fixed ASAP and are Steve's highest priortity so I expect that all these will be fixed in the next few weeks. So unless there is some burning desire for a Netplay game, there is no real reason to no buy the game now [:)]. I have had it from release and it has worked amazingly well imho.

I can only advise you to wait until you are certain not to regret the purchase / time investment.

Which could be never if your expectations are too high [:)]

Again I have been happy since launch with the quality of the game, while others had a different set of expectations so are not as happy. So you will need to decide at what point you think the game is worth it or not. Again, I thought it was at the beginning and I am having a lot of fun with it. Which is the whole point isn't it [:)]

Solitaire game is working ok, as in, you will probably run into bugs, but you can normally work around them with reloading auto-saves (the abundance of which is definitely a saving grace at the moment). Solitaire allows you to learn the game, and I am having a lot of fun with it.

The problem is netplay, which is not working right now. This, for me, is the draw of the game, so I am anxious for it to work. I am confident that the major issues that keeps me from playing netplay at all will be worked out over the coming months, and I hope that within a year we'll have a fully functioning product. I am willing to wait for it (as I have been waiting since the late 1990s), and do my best to report bugs and essentially Beta-test the game in the meantime.

The developer has posted that an update should be out next week.

Considering the learning curve for WiF and the fact that I have never seen a game released without bugs.

I am happy to see the positve feedback on the bugs.

This gives you all a chance to become familiar with the game and spot the problems missed by others.

Considering the complexity of the game the beta team could only test so much and was bound to miss some things.
