Okay, I'm gonna dive in and try to learn this thing. What scenario should I start with? (Hoping I won't give up!)

LoBaron -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 8:39:46 PM)

1000 mile, as it is small enough to be handled easily, but long enough and includes all services to support a nice learning curve.

Coral Sea suggested sometimes, but IMHO it is too intense and too short to teach much to a completely new player. If you handled 1000 mile well, you might want to try Guadalcanal (or Coral Sea if you get the kicks out of fast paced do or die CV engagements [;)])

Ah, and welcome!

DanSez -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 8:55:02 PM)

I'd say do the Coral Sea 15 day scenario first.
Learn the movement/search patterns and see just how quick and bloody a carrier battle can be.

Play that a few times from each side.

Guadalcanal has invasion and supply issues to solve plus war on two fronts (Port Moresby and Guadalcanal) which makes it a much tougher nut to crack I would agree with LoBaron that the 1000 mile one would be another good starter game.

Good luck, I've had the game about a year now and have only scratched the surface of what it offers.

tocaff -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 9:04:01 PM)

Try all of the short scenarios as they all offer something to help with the learning cliff. Start with Coral Sea, I'd skip Operation Buccaneer, sorry T, as it's a Japanese nightmare. Play them from both sides.

jcjordan -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 9:34:56 PM)

My thoughts are scen1 - dive right in the deep end & just start playing, you've 5yrs of game time to make your mistakes & learn from them as well as learn the system.

comsolut -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 9:39:29 PM)

Definitely Guadalcanal. First against the ai. Then Pbem.

Imho.

Then you are ready for the campaign.

GreyJoy -> RE: Newb (12/4/2013 9:59:43 PM)

And, above all, read the manual twice. then read the LoBaron' Coordination guide (3 times at least). Then all Alfred's guide (5 times).

Damian's guide for the japanese economy is also a MUST

...oh and get Tracker!

welcome aboard!

That's how I learned the game. First go as Allies I went about 6 weeks; second go (Allies again) I went until '43. Then I thought I knew it all and went PBEM - and then got to learn it all over again. And now I can hold my own (sometimes).

nashvillen -> RE: Newb (12/5/2013 12:39:23 AM)

Just twice? Open it in adobe on the computer and learn how to do keyword searches for things. This will also help. Also, read this board every day, sometimes more than that, latch on to one or two AARs and read them, ask questions as to why players do this or do that. Post questions here.

Then, when you feel really comfortable come over to "The Thread" and be prepared to not take yourself or anyone there seriously and have fun!

the1henson -> RE: Newb (12/6/2013 4:08:46 PM)

First post, but I can vouch for "read the board." I've never run across another forum as knowledgeable, intellectually curious, and willing to help as this community - it's really something special.

Take my endorsement with a grain of salt, since this is my first post ever, but I learn something new here every day - and I've been reading this forum for a couple years now.

Only reason I've started posting at all is I'm considering taking the plunge into PBEM. It's time to kick the AI and learn the game for real in the next while? We'll see, I guess.

rsallen64 -> RE: Newb (12/6/2013 9:57:18 PM)

I've had the game for years, and loved Uncommon Valor, but to be honest, even though I am a LONG time wargamer, I was just too intimidated by this game. But I have been reading AARs and the board for some time now, and I finally took the plunge a while ago, into the Guadalcanal scenario, and I have to say I am absolutely hooked! So I agree with everyone here: read, read, read, posts and AARs as well as the manual, but in the end, just dive in and learn as you go. But, where do I get Alfred's and LoBaron's guides?

Er, I didn't make Operation Buccaneer.

Bullwinkle58 -> RE: Newb (12/6/2013 10:29:26 PM)

Nobody mentioned the sacrifice of the goat.

So, OP . . . get a goat . . . get a copy of "Pearl Harbor" . . .

I've taken an informal vow to never post in that vile thing. It's a monster.

topeverest -> RE: Newb (12/7/2013 8:39:37 PM)

I went right to PBEM sc1 with an opponent who interpreted rules. Worked out pretty well, even if the results were predictable.

I would agree that you need to read the manual twice, but the biggest thing is just getting enough days and battles under your belt. There is no magic formula.

Grey Joy has spoken!

+1!

Awesome forum - for all the reasons posted.

As for the Alfred, LoBaron, Damien and the T-ster - all Good Men who know of what they speak.

I bought War in the Pacific, never really played it, as I was clueless. AE even more so; but the burn was there, the tools available (forum, rulebook) and while it has taken more than three years I feel at least I have a basic grasp of the essentials. Note: this does not mean that I am particularly competent...<grin>

So... Kentcol stick with it. It is a wonderfully rewarding journey.

Mac
