I'm thinking, out loud, that you sent a task force of some size to Hiva Oa that set off an alarm. If you are going to be sneaky, be quiet.[8D]

ny59giants -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (3/30/2014 3:20:11 PM)

Convert some of your YPs to ACM and start mining your forward ports and place an ACM in each port for every 150 mines you lay. RA has increased the production rate of mines. Hopefully, you haven't had your CMs and DMs all sunk yet. [;)]

Don't upgrade SS Argonaut, Narwhal, and Nautilus in 4/42. I use these three 13 knot subs in a Sub Minelaying TF.

DD/DM TF from Hiva Oa caught Johns TF still unloading slowly at a Is. near Tahiti, according to the reports he lost 5 AK/AP and just shy of 1000 troops. What gave it away was the DD/DM's don't have "long legs", so he just started snooping around and the French Polynesians are nearly the last thing standing between him and South America!

The best news out of that is the DD/DM's hurt him a little, the worst news is I stuck a stick in the beehive!

I originally had YO's and AO's at Hiva Oa as refuelers for the TF's trying for Australia. They are now enroute back to L.A.

Ok Will do on the YP's to ACM's

Good thing you brought the sub topic up. I already have two out of the three of them in Seattle for conversion to SST.

Are they that good as minelayers? good endurance? never thought of that either...

There are a "few" CM's/DM's left. IIRC doesn't the Clemson DD's convert to DM also? (I really like Clemson's as DE's instead for escort duty)

moore4807 -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (3/30/2014 9:43:50 PM)

Michael,

1/2 Dozen YP are now converting to ACM's and there were 5 ACM's at L.A. where there isn't even 300 mines there. In 10 days we will have 9 ACM's ready to go.

Nautilus and Narwhal are at Seattle and conversion is off for all three subs. Argonaut is 1-2 days out of Seattle. Any suggestions on first port to mine with them?
Speaking of mines, there have been mine explosions sounds for the past two days at Hiva Oa, we placed 300 mines there in the TF that got attacked. 2 DM's are fleeing for P.H. along with an AK northward with John's CV's in hot pursuit.(AWAY from my subs d*mmit!)

There a couple Brit/Aussie/NZ CM's and DM's straggled throughout the Southern hemisphere It will take a little while to round them up and get them to bases that will handle the mine loads.

I have 6 Clemson DD's at Sydney - all with a 4/42 upgrade date and DM is one option for them. Comments? As I stated above they are my favorites to change over to DE's and use as escorts for Cargo TF's

It's my humble opinion that you might use the DE's better than the DM's because you're really short of escorts. I've been using your
DD's as escorts for my transport TF's and we've just lost three of them in the past three days. So the DD's are becoming a rare and
endangered species.

ny59giants -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (3/30/2014 11:18:53 PM)

ALL Clemson DDs go to APDs!! They have the most ASW devices on your American warships for most of '42.

You get plenty of everything else. You have very few ships that you can use in Fast Transport TFs (maybe not so much in '42, but by '43 you will want them [;)]). I do the conversions very early in the war and use them as escorts until you get more of the SCs (11 come in mid-August), PFs, and DEs.

Where to use the three subs as minelayers is up to you. Since they are up at Seattle then either Umnak of Adak may be good choices or over in Kuriles.

Canadian KVs and these APDs are my main escorts early on. DDs go to CV TFs first (6 to 8 each), then to the 18 knot AOs (one Replenishment TF for all these special AOs to fuel my CV throughout the war), and finally the slower AOs. I don't have many to use with transports right now.

Porter Class DDs go with your SC TF as they have poor AA and ASW. The Bristol Class DDs go into CV TFs as they trickle in.

moore4807 -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (3/31/2014 4:19:10 AM)

APD for the DD/Clemson's - check!

Re: Adak - I think John may have bugged out of the Aleutians, no construction going on ANY of the ports he took. There is no reaction to the searches and the subs are not getting attacked even when I go into the ports!

Since I put a couple Marine Raider sqds up there, I may send the APD's back with a small BTF to take one or two back... short hops-under LBA cover???

I want to drop mines right on J3's front doorstep [:-] BUT I will refrain and pick secondary targets that have a better survivability rating [:D]

Thank you for your advice and help - again!

*** John admitted to us getting/damaging a BC and a DD at Hiva Oa with the mines (subject to disinformation/F.O.W.) but a DD showed up on the sunk list with Hiva Oa as the place of its demise...

Suscribed. [8D].

moore4807 -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 3:59:05 AM)

Ok folks,

John asked me if I'm continuing the AAR after Larry has dropped out...
The answer is yes - sort of <grin>

I'm getting much needed help and advice from Michael Benoit, he has pointed out our numerous shortcomings, and kindly offered to help me get this Allied effort heading in the right direction.

I invite Michael to post here and give his thoughts, with no disrespect to ANYBODY, Michael will be my consigliere, and have final say... I don't want to discourage anyone, but simply I couldn't imagine a better basket to put my few remaining eggs into!

As to the game - overall impressions, I've never run across anyone who "Super Sizes" his air forces like John does, and certainly no one as hyper aggressive as John is.

For those wanting to pound on me about losing Saratoga... It was a split decision, we had a TF of a Navy Base unit and Engineers along with sunk CV's bought out aircraft.
I had a BmbTF of 2 Frenchie BC's and DD's along with a follow on force of 2 Old BB's and 6 CL/DD's headed to Rongiroa(?) which was covered by the 3 CV's and CLAA,CA & DD's.
The BmbTF was going to determine the forces on Rongiroa, If John had just left his Eng/Base Forces I should be able to land and oppose him...BUT once the aircraft battle occurred and Saratoga took the bombs, it caused a fuel bunker explosion which she just couldn't recover from and sank two turns later.
This caused me to reroute the Amphib TF to Nuku Hiva and start building up the second island in the Marquesa Is chain instead.

We got a TK TF through to Port Augusta with 30K in fuel and have a Large TK TF with around 77K of fuel going to Auckland covered by the Frenchies Battle Cruiser TF - The French will meet up with their compatriots at Auckland as the first/last line of defense should John go bonkers and not give a damn about the Allied bonus.

Summary - I sincerely don't think I will win, but I'm gonna give it a serious try. I compare it to sitting down to a nice game of chess against Garry Kasparov...

Once I get a little more organized I will post some pix and plans... That's all for now

Battered and abused but still floating
Jim

ny59giants -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 12:32:23 PM)

I've just done the Allied part of the last turn and have June 2nd in my in box, but need to go do my bi-monthly supervision for LPC in less than hour. What I will be doing is day by day turn re-organization for the month of June and then slowly back out in July, but remain as consultant throughout the war. I told Jim to prepare to go into '46. There are lots of things that need to be redone and some lessons to learn.

June 1st - I'm doing a theater by theater effort to re-organize forces, but will leave the big decisions up to Jim as I was with John in formulating major plans in his campaign from the beginning. So Jim told what plans he has for Americal and 1st Marine Divisions and I will review with him the pro and con of doing so. For this turn, I did Alaska, Canada, and USA.

Ground: What I told Jim to do was to use PP to buy out "Destroyed Ground Units" that are ENG and cost less than 10 PP each. The guys were not doing this. Those in defense of the Aleutians were not prepping for the base defense and those have been changed. Some BFs will try to move forward as a few bases are short of Aviation Support. In Canada, I have troops moving towards Prince Rupert as its my main base to support NoPac operations. Most of the LCUs were still at at start places. In USA, I had the same thing, many still in base they came in as reinforcements. Some are headed to Prince Rupert, most are going to San Fran, and the non-USMC EABs are headed for Eastern USA (EABs to India with SeaBees to Pacific), and some AA and CD units head out.

Air: Lots of groups had mixed bag of planes. What I'm saying here vs in PM is that I will need to change the composition of the bomber groups. There are needs of airframes everywhere, but I will need to make the 8 plane groups just 4e bombers (B-17s and later B-24s) and then the 13 (and later 16) plane groups are to be just 2e bombers (B-25, 26, and A-20s). Many of the 13 plane groups are B-17s. There were many groups at 80% training and it was "General" training. I ordered just about everybody there to rest as multiple groups were down near 50% morale. I will inform Jim about how I train pilots in a bit. I'm keeping Larry in the loop so he can learn. I'm still learning after all these years as I get further in the game. The good thing about RA is the "Training Groups" that will produce decent pilots. This had better leaders, so I hope to have a harvest by July. Next, will be to decide where so many groups need to go.

Sea: There are lots of little TFs all over the map including many headed for UK for supplies. I will reroute them back to USA and Panama once they get there. We have just hit June 1st, so many will be going through upgrades (increasing AA) while I sort this out. Too many are out there without any escorts. I tend to use those Canadian KVs (Endurance 3500) as transport escorts until the SC start to come out in August. Getting the merchant fleet sorted out will take months due to number in off map places.

Overall, it is a little worse than I expected and it will take more than a month to get organized. Allied sea movements take a long time. I will start to find and pull out of service the surviving APs that convert to APAs in 3/43. Besides CVs, assault shipping is the next most important ships to keep afloat. [:D]

Players have stated the Allies could lose almost everything in the first 6 months and still come back. We shall try to do it here!! [:)]

traskott -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 1:14:42 PM)

Good luck!!! Considering the LCU are still at EC, Oz and NZ should be critical defenseless, isn't?

traskott -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 1:49:08 PM)

And u should check the pools to get an optimun ratio to modernize the LCUs. Aussies, in fact, can be upgraded fast and well with some detail work..

Lecivius -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 5:13:43 PM)

JIm,

Don't feel bad about loosing the Sara. Heck, I was mauled in my 1st PBEM. And I mean mauled!

It put me off of PBEM's forever. It was beyond humiliating. I still have to force my thumb down after that game.

ny59giants -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 7:32:44 PM)

Just did my second turn, June 2nd, and forward it to Jim. This time my OCD-ness reached all the way over to Australia. Doubled checked Canada and USA. Pressing need is fuel in Australia, so all Heavy Industry was turned off. Sydney has 700k in supply, so we are good there. I do expect John to raid the Cape Town to southern Australia route with CVE/CVLs and warships, so small TFs will be used here soon.

traskott -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 7:38:07 PM)

Use of the off-map movement is a must. With some cats at Perth and Colombo a good sloc can be stablished

ny59giants -> RE: Command Decisions: Yeomen vs. Samurai RA 6.4 (5/15/2014 8:41:34 PM)

Can we get a recap of losses, specifically, CV-CVL, fast BB? perhaps a screen of US army bomber pools as well? Curious what your starting with.

Any news? No more big naval battles ? [:)]

June 29, 1942 and things are looking pretty grim for the Allies...

no new naval battles - mostly minor sub skirmishes, the highlight being O-23 outside of Ceduna (South Central coast of OZ) firing 12 TT at CV Akagi/Kaga and finally scoring a single TT hit on the second day(with ammo locker explosion). No reported sinking or losses of air groups.

Michael has gotten me squared away as much as he was able... (he can only do so much with a minor leaguer) <grin>

J3 has both flown and marched from all the bases near Perth and slammed my 2 Div and accompanying troops, to where they have no AV value at all. He is now using his tanks and Cav as the Anvil, he is just about finishing them off as we speak. (1K losses per turn now)

Oddly I look at this as the best thing to happen to me since I started playing this game, even though I got roughed up - it was a valuable lesson learned and KUDO'S to Michael for taking the time and effort to explain the why's of it all...
I understood most of the mechanisms of the game, but not the intricacies of how the parts fit together, and several of you had made good suggestions and advice that I didn't take right away because I'm a hard headed Irishman... Michael made the "OH" light bulb go on, so to speak!
