Sabre21 -> Netplay frustrations (12/8/2013 2:42:31 AM)

For several days now, myself and Bloodybill have tried to get a global game going on Netplay. Both of us are updated to version 1.05.

A couple days ago we almost made it to the end of turn 1 when it crashed and we couldn't get anything to reload. Initially we were having a crash every 20 or 30 minutes, then it became more frequent. The message screen turns off at times by itself when progressing to a new phase, some times it does and some times it don't. But when it does, there for a while if either of us brought it back up, the game would crash.

It seemed as though as the game progressed, things started to get weird. Bill (Axis player) made a port attack onto the Polish convoy in port killing it. The icon stayed on the map on his screen but disappeared from mine. Then during land movement he overran that icon with a ground unit, but it stayed there on his map while I was pondering why he went there when nothing was there.

A couple phases later, he declared war on Denmark and Holland but I as the Allies never had any window pop-up indicating he did so and of course I didn't put any minor country forces. When it came time for him to move he thought I just decided not to put anything down, but then he found out he couldn't enter either country. We reloaded and tried again and had the same results.

So then we started again with a setup save and tried the Polish port attack only to find out the same ghost ship was on his screen and not mine so we cleared all the old saves off our computers and started from scratch figuring many of them had been corrupted some how. At one point we made it to the French turn and I made a port attack onto where he had his amphib and it crashed the game. So port attacks are really causing issues with us right now.

We ran into the same issues using a fresh start-up. So after 7 or 8 hours we gave up and tried again today and made it to where he broke down a Jap land unit and then decided not to and tried to reform it and the game crashed. We tried to reload a previous save but with no luck so after 3 complete setups and 7 hours we gave up and am hoping something is done soon to address these issues with netplay, for neither one of us has had these problems in solitaire mode.

I summarized the issues below, I may have missed some:

1. Chat window disappears at times on its own and when brought back up sometimes but not always crashes the game;
2. Port attacks are causing some unusual things to happen that may be corrupting the game;
3. Breaking down and reforming units in the same phase is causing the game to crash (maybe due to game corruption)
4. Savegames not reloading even though all data matches between the 2 players (again I think game corruption is the culprit at this point).

Maybe after extended periods there is some memory leak occurring somewhere. Hopefully all this can be figured out.

something to add to Andy's post, there is some really weird things happening with supply during the Japanese turn in the Nanchang area. If you have a HQ unit along with combat units in this area and move Japanese units outside of this area, such as Canton or Chengchow, after you have moved the units around Nanchang then those units become unsupplied. Also Those units may be in supply during the Japanese impulse, but then during the Chinese impulse they will be unsupplied, and the weather is unchanged in both impulses. Despite these persistent bugs and crashes this is an excellent game, in both solo and online mode. Sabre21 and I literally had to do a complete set up for our online global scenario 3 times today. Thanks for the excellent work that has already been put into this game.

Rijssiej -> RE: Netplay frustrations (12/8/2013 5:47:12 PM)

I also seem to have some weird supply issues in China.
As you can see only the Seoul Mil is in supply. Al the rest of the units including the HQ are out of supply. Supply even changed during the Japanese turn. During the attack they were in supply. During the Air Rebase they are out of supply. I play hot seat not netplay btw.

I've been having the same problem as Saber21 and bloodybill. I'm wondering if the configurations of the two computers might be a cause of some of the problems?

You can save set-ups - not including any units that must be random choices - but the rest. Maybe you did that already, for it's a timesaver!

I've tried that and IMO it doesn't really save much time considering the number of random units.

Nice to see you again sabre21!! Yes netplay is boned me and ara can't get past turn 1 either. :0(

Sabre21 -> RE: Netplay frustrations (12/10/2013 8:03:03 PM)

Bloodybill and I started a new Global game today on Netplay. Things were going pretty smoothly, we made it to the Allied part of the first impulse. I was the Allies and I took a British naval option. The 2 Polish ships were still alive so I moved the destroyer out to the N. Sea to link with the Brits that had just moved there, then I took the convoy back to an English port. As soon as I dropped it off into a port the game crashed. Just so you know, we both skipped doing any port attacks to avoid any issues there.

We tried loading a savegame but with no luck. We tried about a dozen different autosaves and even a manual save we made following setup, and nothing would load. So our game has come to a stop.

Until a patch comes out addressing netplay issues, Bill and I are going to hold off from any netplay games. So far, our solitaire games are unaffected by the port issues that occur when on Netplay. All of our solitaire games reload just fine with no issues.

PS: Nice to see you and Ara again too Bill (bwheatley).

paulderynck -> RE: Netplay frustrations (12/10/2013 8:17:59 PM)

I have hit one situation with saved NetPlay files where the game would not load depending on which player logged into the NetPlay forum first, but would load if he was second to log-in. Both would get the dialog that the other was there and click 'OK', but still I encountered the described limitation.

Did you try it both ways when attempting to restore?

So far from what we have been able to do is that the person that initiated the game is the only one able to bring back up the savegame. Bill logs onto Netplay, then I select the savegame and log into Netplay. Once on, I get a pop-up that says bloodybill is logged on and I select ok. He then gets a pop-up and selects ok and usually that triggers the game to load up on both our machines. But today and our last game session a couple days ago, after encountering a crash, nothing loads up other than a new game.

paulderynck -> RE: Netplay frustrations (12/10/2013 9:04:34 PM)

Hmmm, did you use the task manager to see if an image of MWiF is still running? If you have not already done so, try ensuring that MWiF is completely exited, then start again with trying to restore. IIRC there may be issues with what MWiF has left in memory after a Madexcept.

Sorry for the inquisition, but trying to find common denominators. Do you confirm that separate from this issue, if bloodybill is always the initiator of the game, then games never restore if you are the one to log-in first?

I never used the task manager but I always exit out completely to restore. Bill wasn't at first, but even when he did, we couldn't get any of our saves to reload.

We also ensure Bill is logged on first. We live only a few miles apart so we are on the phone talking back and forth as we go from step to step. So Bill logs on, I load up the appropriate savegame and then log on. We have done the same procedure from the beginning and for the first few days it seemed to work ok. Most games loaded, some never. Last 2 game sessions, nothing would reload.

The way restoring a NetPlay saved game is designed to work is:

1 - Both players have a saved game on their computers. The GAM files are different because the GAM file records which side the player's computer is playing.

2 - The GAM files need to have been made at the same time, with the same Next Entry #, as reported in the details of the saved game shown on the rightmost panel of the Restore Saved Game screen.

3 - Both players should be starting the program 'fresh'. Playing one game of MWIF and from within that game trying to start/restore a NetPlay game is problematic - at best.

4 - Both players should restore their own copy of the saved game, clicking on the Login to NetPlay button when it appears.

5 - One (maybe both) of the players should get a prompt that the other player has logged in, and clicking OK to that prompt should start the game on both computers.

---
From what you described, I suspect #3 is the problem.

Well...you can give Bill and myself the dumb*** award for this one. Looks like we both had a brain lapse[sm=00000734.gif] We just tested it and our savegame loads fine...doh!

I just ran port attacks on Leningrad without any problems:

I ran a port attack on Leningrad (surprise die roll of 2). Germany spent 2 surprise points to achieve 2 to damage and 3 to abort. Germany chose the first target, the USSR chose the second, Germany chose the third and then spent 3 surprise points to choose the fourth, and also chose the fifth. All of this proceeded correctly.

At this point I see no problems with Port Attacks for NetPlay.

Sabre21 -> RE: Netplay frustrations (12/18/2013 2:33:15 PM)

Well that's good to hear. When the next patch comes out, Bill and I will give it another shot. Both of us do like the game.
