ComradeP -> Black Turn - Dash to the Donets (12/10/2013 6:05:22 PM)

After the conclusion of the battle for Kiev and after cleaning up the Kiev pocket, the Germans and their allies resume their advance to the east. 3rd Romanian Army was attacked by the Soviets recently, and it's not in a great shape. 11th Army abandoned its original plans to capture the Crimea and was forced to send numerous divisions to help the Romanians hold the line.

6th Army and elements of 17th Army will assault Kharkov and move to the Donets.
About half of 17th Army will support 1st Panzer Group as it moves southeast.
The Hungarian Mobile Corps, the Slovak Fast Division, parts of 11th Army and the remaining combat effective 3rd Romanian Army will move east in the direction of Mariupol and the coast.

The OKH hopes to pin the two Soviets armies that attacked 3rd Romanian Army against the coast, encircle it, and destroy it. The assault on Kharkov will be a slugging match. 1st Panzer Group will need to reach the Mius before the Rasputitsa comes and makes any kind of substantial advance impossible.

Start of turn 2.

The infantry moves closer to Kharkov.

1st Panzer Group destroyed the Soviet units opposing its bridgehead and can now choose whether to head north, south or east. Though the breakthrough is impressive, it can't be supplied, so the first order of business on the next turn is to clean the rail line.

You have a choice where to move the armour on turn 1. I tend to prefer to move it across the northern bank of the river instead of using the bridgehead, but this is more historical.

The Soviets respond by pulling some of their units back and moving others into blocking positions.

In the south, the veteran German units make good progress on a narrow front.

Start of turn 3.

The infantry gets closer to Kharkov, although Soviet resistance is fierce.

1st Panzer Group cleans up the bridgehead and the railroad, to allow supply to move forwards, and prepares for future operations.

The Germans and Romanians in the south slowly move towards Mariupol as the Soviets try to restore the cohesion of their defensive line.

As you can see, a number of Soviet units in the south are now out of supply for two turns.

The first mud also appeared, we're running out of time.

Start of turn 4.

The Germans are adjacent to Kharkov and will be able to storm the city from two sides, which is helpful because the defenders are quite tough.

In the south, Mariupol should fall as well and 1st Panzer Group can move towards Stalino, maybe even take it.

I'm lucky the mud in the north doesn't cover the actual Kharkov hex, otherwise taking it would be (nearly) impossible. The mud does prevent the Panzer division south of Kharkov from being able to attack the city.

ComradeP -> RE: Black Turn - Dash to the Donets (12/10/2013 6:22:02 PM)

Start of turn 5.

Kharkov, Stalino and Mariupol have been captured. 1st Panzer Group moves towards the Mius.

The Soviets counterattacked the unit in Kharkov, but it survived (it was close, though).

Victory on turn 5 as 1st Panzer Group moves across the Mius, just on time as well as the mud will prevent any kind of good advance towards Rostov until the arrival of winter freezes the ground.
