I can't voice an opinion for all the minor OS versions between 98 SE and XP, as after 95 the OS that might have been, and 98 the OS that almost was, then 98 SE the ww will keep selling OSs as long as you buy them, well I got just a tiny bit pissed off. Ok irrate is a better word maybe. I heard the terms Win 2000 then Win ME and my immediate feelings were "get stuffed". I have been on Win XP Home long enough to know there is some differences, not entirely sure how much, but I use Win XP Pro. It is like everyone says, totally different from the way 98 SE and earlier runs. It is not the same beast. The emulation feature known as the "Compatibility" tab inside of a right click on troublesome program and then Properties menu choice, is not a fix all feature but it sure helps in a lot of cases. And inside of Compatitility you have several variables with which to fiddle with. You can choose 95 through 2000 as options, as well as set display to 256 colour mode and 640 x 480 mode (all of which might alter how a troublesome program reacts. Combine this with your possibly needing to possibly fiddle with an install setup file as well as fiddle with a exec. file to get a program to run. XP's ability to run older programs sometimes requires the user to mathematically eliminate all the variables. Then again it might be nothing more than inclusion of a simple file. Allied General was designed with 95 in mind. And you would think that might be a problem. The program works fine though, with the simple copying into the Windows/System32 folder of the Wing32.dll file. That and using compatibility feature on the exec. file. The trick here, is if you move the game folder for any reason, you must renew the compatibility function on the exec. file. The biggest problem I had with Allied General, was finding that damnable Wing32.dll file. I lucked out one day and found it on a wargamer website. But in the final analysis, sometimes you have to choose to either say good bye to the program, use 98 SE in a secondary install role, or accept that you can't yet enjoy XP. I by the way greatly enjoy XP.
