Icemania -> Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/15/2013 8:35:12 AM)

Hey All:

To assist I've compiled a collection of links below by topic to key threads around the forum. Feel free to propose additions or deletions and I'll update accordingly (particularly in this initial edit).

While some of these references are old I'll link to them if they still have a relevant component. The best way to make them current would be to post in the threads referenced below and update them.

This thread is not intended to debate the specifics of any topic, please post specifics in the relevant threads, and also try to extend existing conversations rather than creating new threads.

I'm deliberately posting this in the main forum to ensure it is most visible rather than in the War Room and where a sticky would be most useful.

Thanks, very useful.

Darkspire -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/15/2013 9:22:16 AM)

Dude you put it in the wrong place again, this needs to be in the war room or it will get lost [;)]

Thanks for putting it together though, can you just edit and move it on a new thread in there?

Darkspire

Buio -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/15/2013 9:23:56 AM)

Thanks for the compilation, nice work.

Darkspire

The War Room is far less active than the main forum, indeed some people post without even reading the War Room. A sticky on the main page will be more useful. That said I'll create a post there that references this one anyway.

Timotheus -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/15/2013 10:28:31 PM)

Woo, stickied, good stuff.

Exactly what new players will be looking for.

Thank you kindly.

Timotheus -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/15/2013 11:00:32 PM)

There should be a quick and dirty guide to one-off components.

As in, listing all the components for ships/bases of which you only need one per ship/base, and more of them bring no additional benefit whatsoever.

Actually, the game should prevent you from adding more than one of these one-offs, but alas, that is not so.

Spidey -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/16/2013 2:12:33 AM)

The game shouldn't prevent you from putting redundant components on ships, though a warning would of course be quite nice.

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/16/2013 10:06:20 AM)

Thanks for the sticky!

If anybody wants to create a good guide for components I'll amend the list above.

Spidey -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/16/2013 6:33:56 PM)

[Boring cluttery stuff]. [>:]

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/18/2013 11:03:10 AM)

Spidey, suggest starting a new thread. If it becomes something people want in the Guide to Guides then I will certainly add it.

Algon -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/19/2013 12:55:54 PM)

Thanks for the compilation Icemania, and to the authors of those guides as always!

Just as a suggestion, it might be helpful for new players in particular if there was some indication about which version of the game those guides were written for, and/or whether the info retains much of its relevance for later versions, if it wasn't made for the most recent expansion? Probably easier said than done, though.

I would like to keep this easily maintainable. If the link has a useful relevant component to the current release/version, I'll keep the link. If it's no longer relevant in any way, shout it out, and I'll remove it.

Spidey -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/21/2013 3:12:29 AM)

Sure thing, Ice. I'm not quite ready to write the guide myself, though. I really just wanted to provide a starting point, but I'll push it somewhere else so it doesn't create clutter in this topic.

Understood. As for relevance, it's rarely that black and white - most guides retain some usefulness even when out of date in most respects!

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/21/2013 7:17:15 AM)

Fully agree, it's very subjective, and hope this thread will be used to debate changes as needed.

starmonkey -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (12/28/2013 4:43:24 AM)

Thanks for this - very useful - I'm new to DW and struggle with feeling "intimidated" by the game. These guides will help.

Edit: here are the bookmarks I'm collecting on DW - might be useful to other newbies:

Timotheus -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (1/5/2014 11:27:53 PM)

Last but not least [;)]

I will add a third section for colonization, spying and research for newbies when I get off my lazy buttocks and stop my current (lagged to hell) game.

I have to say there is a wealth of info in these guides and all new players should at least skim them.

Osito -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (4/30/2014 12:43:00 PM)

Icemania,

You might consider adding one or more of these to the list of guides - at your discretion of course.

Guide to Armour (Erik Rutins guidance):
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3600917

Guide to Planetary Population:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3342485

The effect of colony population on build times:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3342485

Also something from Numdydar on resources which looks useful:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3322433

And finally, when do we get the rest of your guide, Timotheus?

Edit: Also this one from Feelotraveller on component composition:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3352769&mpage=1&key=%EF%BF%BD

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (4/30/2014 1:34:13 PM)

Thanks Osito, some good material, so I've updated the OP. Note two of the links that you have quoted were identical, what was the second 3342485 link?

All, very happy to include other links, so let me know if you want anything else added.

It would be great for all of the useful parts of this (and a lot more which can be mined by searching this forum) to make the Galactopedia some day.

Osito -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (4/30/2014 1:37:22 PM)

Oops, the link should have been:

The effect of colony population on build times:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3341975

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (4/30/2014 1:38:36 PM)

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (4/30/2014 1:39:01 PM)

Other suggestions welcome.

FingNewGuy -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (5/2/2014 5:23:11 AM)

Thanks for this, Icemania! [:)]

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (5/27/2014 9:39:08 AM)

I've added Das's very good and very patient How to Play Distant Worlds Video Series

balto -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (5/28/2014 12:05:37 AM)

Ice,

I am thinking of jumping back into the best 4x game of all time with the introduction of Universe (I did not like the pirate thing). I therefore I am trying to refresh my mind before trying the tutorials and I looked at your summary above which is great.

I think your Research Guide does not have the bestlink. This is the best one : http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2987897&mpage=1&key=.

It shows how you actually calculate and the impact of those bonuses and how strong they are.

I have not played in a while, I hope those are still correct, they were kind of 'wonky' and 'overly complex, so maybe Universe changed it.

Icemania -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (5/28/2014 6:54:52 AM)

Good suggestion, I've added that to the list.

donpaulo -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (6/1/2014 4:04:00 AM)

Links are golden

Thanks so much

buglepong -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (6/24/2014 7:17:27 AM)

Any guide to troops of difference races and effect of combat experience/tech?

Aeson -> RE: Distant Worlds Guide to Guides Mk II (7/6/2014 3:58:51 AM)

This thread has the list of base troop statistics in it and covers a bit about how people think you should use your forces:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3529930

This thread tells you what the maximum stats for troops are:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3644265

There's also an older thread about troops here:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3121577
The information found there is largely reproduced in the other two threads.

I think there are other bits and pieces scattered around, perhaps mostly in the War Room section of the forums, but there isn't any one guide other than those that I know of, and I don't know of anything on troop generals, either. I also don't think there's anything that specifically covers how the techs improve your troops, but it appears that it's just a simple multiplier to the appropriate aspect (the attack improvements improve the base attack score by the listed percent but don't affect the defense score, the defense improvements increase the base defense score by the listed percent but don't affect the attack score, and the maintenance cost reduction reduces the troop maintenance by the listed percent; attack and defense scores are only increased for units which are recruited after the relevant tech was researched, so it's possible for you to recruit a green unit which is better in some way than an experienced unit).

Note that troops of all species can eventually be made equal in strength, given sufficient experience. Some species just have a head start.
