Twotribes -> Looking for a new MMO (12/19/2013 4:07:37 PM)

I know most of you probably don't play massive multiplayer online games but I am looking for a new one. Currently playing Neverwinter. Have played DDO and EQ in the past.

What I really want is one that allows you to build your own little keep and land, wishful thinking indeed.

So any new medievaltype settings Fantasy of course?

shaddock -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (12/19/2013 4:16:42 PM)

I played ddo for a couple of years till I got bored with it. I've not played any other. However there is a Pathfinder mmo in the works. Do a search on Goblin Works (I think).

This might be possible in EQnext.

I also started with UO and EQ and wish there would be still any half-decent title which doesn't bore me to tears after 30 min. of gameplay. Seems the age of subscription-based MMO's is gone. Only straggler is Elder Scrolls Online, which will be available in april 2014.

I tried to play UO but got ganked every time I left town and then corpse camped. I gave up in disgust.

Ganked is getting killed by a more powerfull player, or team of players, that you have no hope of winning against.

Hmm, not sure what happened here.

"Ganked" is getting killed by a player, or team of players, at a much higher level than you, that you have no ope of winning against.

Yup, that was a problem. But with Trammel UO got a bluebie server.

However, EQ was more intriguing for me due to the 3D engine and d&d-inspired system. Played it from the get-go until 2006.

I play on a Free UO Shard, there is no World PVP here so you cannot get ganked.

It's not real without PVP and ganking. [:D] Oh to hear the sceams and autologging off from those that couldn't handle it. Those were the days. [:'(]

Rising-Sun -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (12/21/2013 8:01:23 AM)

Not sure if you are looking for free MMOs or being picky. There is Rift, Star Trek Online, Lord of the Ring Online, of course crappy World of Warcraft. Do you like regular RPG or PVP, perhap both? I played alot of MMOs and i enjoy PvP myself and its funny to see players out there with ragequit lol.

Hertston -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (12/21/2013 4:45:03 PM)

Age of Conan is very good, now it's matured substantially (and it wasn't bad on release). The only one I actually play occasionally these days is The Secret World, but that isn't an elves and goblins job, of course.

dazoline II -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (12/31/2013 6:35:22 PM)

Guild Wars 2, much less grind than other mmo's I've played and its cooperative so you don't get that kill steal issue.

EVE Online might be worth a whirl.

Gilmer -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (1/1/2014 4:31:46 AM)

There's an EQ emulator that is going to go as far as Velious then stop. For a classic experience.

I hated Guild Wars. I hated D&Donline. Conan was OK, but got bored. Warhammer same. Vanguard same. WOW same. All boring boring boring.

I'm not sure I can ever be satisfied the way I felt with EQ right before the exodus to WOW, but in a way it's like the old saying, "You can never go back." I don't think I'll ever re-catch the excitement of waking up at 7 AM on Saturday morning to raid with my guild (they were a Euro guild and that was about 12 PM for them). Getting them to finally try NToV when they felt like "We aren't ready." And then we tried it and we were ready and did well. Then they all moved to the Euro server about a week later. Then coming back and raiding all the way up to whatever expansion got us to 85. Then quitting in disgust like most everyone who was in a raid/family type guild who got sick of the grinding, just to be able to raid.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (1/1/2014 2:28:47 PM)

MMO's are all but ruined anymore. With this fast travel crap and give away of free loot on a timed basis is pretty ridiculous. I think it's Rift that started this mess of giving out free loot on a timed basis and that's all people play anymore is quick teleport (free rides) to the loot area and kill the boss and get the loot. There's no adventure left to MMO's anymore.

I remember when in Everquest if you died you really had to worry about yer stuff. If you didn't or couldn't get back to it within 7 days you lost it. That was some great fun. The game had dynamic events like werewolves and armies of the dead that would come and try to take over cities. I remember an army of dark elves trying to take over Freeport that I was involded in and that was some real fun how the enemy ai stomped us low levels in the Freeport front yard.

The other thing is the quick rush to the highest levels now, once again nobody takes any time to explore and actually learn their character and how to really play. They just press some buttons and think they are experienced MMO players. what a laugh.

I remember when it took you hours to get from one place to the other in Everquest like Halas to Crushbone was a trek and a half. Then PoP came out and made the game so candyland easy. Just press a button and yer one place like Halas to another like Crushbone. People who made plat off of helping people and teleporting them to close locations were gone. ripped off by SOE and no longer really needed except for a couple of hard to reach places PoP didn't go. So there you had 10,000 druids and 10,000 wizards all competing to teleport to the few places that were left and had to drop prices to try to make any plat. Others who were able to level up so fast and get to the good trade or craft items also undercut prices in the market and things that were once worth a lot became trivial like SOW potions. Soe basically flooded the crafting market with all this free and easy stuff. It's happening to all MMO's now and they aren't worth playing. The boat ride from Freeport to Butcherblock and Butcherblock to the Isle of Kunark became obsolete, nobody used them anymore because of PoP. Places like Unrest and Mistmoor became desolate deserted places, even Crushbone was empty a once thriving area that 100's of people played together. The sad thing about MMO's is there's too much of a rush anymore and all the low level areas become bare before their time. They need to put some components of high level crafted items in these old zones so people will continue to play them because that's what everyone is after more loot and more money.

Guild Wars 1 used to have several high quality loot items that everybody wanted and they sold for 80gold then NCsoft came along and said let's make everything easy as hell to get to and loot and prices dropped like wildfires spread. A once 80 gold piece item went to 20gp or less. Players used to exploit the game to get "run" to a certain area where high level gear was sold. Because it wasn't level based a level 1 could wear it or use it in the case of weapons, if he got the "run" to get it and then would go back to low level arena's and beat the crap out of low levels who were actually playing the game correctly. No matter how much you screamed, Anet never fixed this issue. When all it would have taken was level requirements to wear the gear and use certain weapons. It basically knocked out the need to buy level 2 gear or the middle class gear. Because it basically forced everyone to get a "run" and get the highest level gear as soon as they could. The other problem in the early days of Guild Wars was running ranger griefers in random arena battles. Most players didn't bring a slow skill to them and these ranger types would bring a running fast skill to grief the other team into quitting even though the rest of his team had lost and died and left the arena. Finally Anet did put a timer on Arena battles when it was clear one side had won and ended the days of the ranger griefer. You can bet if there's something that can be done to piss players off or grief there will be players who will find it and do it. It's really sad the world has such people in it.

Then finally to add insult to the already easy game, Anet decides to add Heroes and Mercenaries (characters you would buy that had your stats on all your charcters) to the game and made the early chapters easy as hell to play. I remember just loading up on Heroes and Mercs and watching them play while I just stood there and they would wipe the floor with the enemy ai who never did anything spectacular but just come in "numbers" and have higher level stats but no real improved ai performance.

The only challenge left in the game after Heroes and Mercs was maybe the dungeons of the last chapter. And even those became pretty easy after you learned where all the traps were. The enemy ai certainly didn't improve things. It made it easy to "solo" and most people no longer wanted to group. Thus MMO became SOLO mode. Which most all MMO games are turning into now except the old ones.

I wish they would bring back Star Wars Galaxies myself with the good old days before the NGE when you could be every class of character in one. I hate games that force you to pick and be just one type. Back in the day of the origional I was a Creature Handling, Medic, Artisian, Rifeman, Dancer. I could do everything and I didn't care about being no Jedi. It's a silly trait for epeeners anyways. The NGE made you choose 1 of the above and only 1. All that work I put into my character gone in a single bound and the game no longer fun to play.

So to suggest a good MMO to play now? To me there isn't one. They all have a leveling treadmill, they all pretty much have quick fast (unrealistic) travel systems and they all are pretty much candlyland games anymore. There's not a one that apeals to me anymore as I can waste time in other ways besides MMO's.

Rising-Sun -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (1/1/2014 2:32:01 PM)

I couldnt stand EQ or WoW Series, since its unbalance after players get something on high end for low levels, esp showing off in pvp and there no way to win it. Pve servers are really boring though. If you want the upper hands, going to have to spend quite a bit of money and its pointless. Only thing i didnt like Eq, that is pretty old and outdated. Eq2 on Nagafen is crazy and loaded with alot of exiled players to kill anyone and doesnt feel right or not happy the way it is. If they had it between good and evil players, it would be alot better and the problems is it lack of players and that why they become exiled so they can find someone to kill. And they run off too fast and its no fun at all.

When i first got Guild Wars 2, though it was boring and silly and its not that bad at all. Now they made some improvements and i have to say it pretty good roleplaying game or MMO. You dont have to duel or get into pvp, you can tag along with players in open world. The good thing is all you need to do is buy the game and that is it, no montly fees! You can craft alot of things, tade, sell, etcs.

I did like rift, but just found how players can cheat, so in WoW, EQ, etcs. But not sure about Guild Wars 2, saw some players using multi-characters or multi-boxing. Rift still having strange graphic glitches that missing part of player's character, it was annoying. Anyway i dont like cheaters and i like to earn my time and title.

If you like hardcore, try Mortal Online or Darkfall. MO isnt that bad, but still have problems and very slow developing and DF, well it isnt like old DF anymore, you can do things to earn prowess points to place them in other skills you never use and power them up and i though that was stupid idea ever. Wish they had the skill system back like in Eve Online. MO is kinda funny though, head get chopped off, eating ****s that make you puke!

Rising-Sun -> RE: Looking for a new MMO (1/3/2014 8:22:22 PM)

I just messed with Guild Wars 2, itsnt that bad MMORPG at all. Least no monthly fees and show alot more improvements since first came out. When i first got it on release, wasnt that great and already got hit by alot of multi-boxing characters. Unfort, demo and free trial are hard to come by though.

From a Veteran MMO Player and co-ran a Guild for almost 10 years, now retired from organizing, planning and basically guilding away, I am surprised that Neverwinter has not been mentioned here. I have been playing the game since Day One and really enjoy it. It is Free to Play (F2P) but as usual some claim it is Pay to Win (P2W). You can level form Zero to 60 pretty fast without spending a dime. I mean it is not going to cost you a cent to even try it out.

If you are into the "Dungeons & Dragons Universe" or curious about it, I say give it a try.

http://nw.perfectworld.com/

And if ever you do decide to play it, send me a PM on the Forums and I would be glad to help you out. All the Servers are merged but I play on Dragon Server if that is required when creating a toon.

Anyhow, whichever suits your fancy, hope you truly find something you enjoy.

Cheers!

Great!

You can find me @Radiick, will send you a message next time I am in Game. I have all Crafting Levels to Max, so can probably make you anything you need.

Level 60 Trickster Rogue named Raad of Melnibone and
Level 27 Hunter Ranger named Radiick of Melnibone.

Can take you trough some dungeons, foundry quests or simple leveling if you require any help.

Only thing I do NOT do is PVP: way too many Wow Kiddies to even think of attempting it.

See this seems to be popular with today's MMO's but it's not Roleplaying it's speed leveling and real roleplayers don't do that kind of crap. This type of player need to go back and play some of the older roleplaying games to understand leveling isn't the "key" issue of roleplaying....it's the adventure and fun of getting there not the rush.

Roleplaying is a "perspective" of how you play your toon (Character). Many People have this "ocd complex" to get to Max Level in the quickest possible time they can. Of course to me that is not roleplaying, that is going from A to B with horse side-blindfolders on (sorry don't know the real term for those things). I don't and never play an MMO that way, I could not give a rat's behind if it takes me 6 months to make one level or 6 minutes to make it. I stop and smell the roses, look under every rock, peek behind every boulder crevasse for a secret entrance, look behind every bookcase for a secret switch, do every single Quest available to me etc...I level up my Character as I would level up myself in a way. So every skill point spent is carefully thought out. Every dungeon I go in well planned, I never leave until I am satisfied I have cleared it completely of mobs, treasures and secret passages. To me, that is how I Roleplay any MMO or even any single RPG.

Others find pleasure in Roleplaying in groups on special Servers using the /ooc command (out of character) when speaking but use the old English/Camelot type language when they speak to each other or other players in Roleplaying mode. Would never ever go out of character when choosing a quests i.e.: would not do something bad is they are lawful good or save every child in a burning orphanage while another would simply pillage the coffers of that orphanage and let every child die in the fire if they were playing Evil type characters. It is all in the way you play the game.

I particular enjoy Neverwinter not because it is free to play (God I have spent some coins on this game)(I would even pay a Monthly fee if they had it anyways), but more so I love the Dungeons and Dragons Realm/Universive and the Lore it has. It truly is the escape I need when I want to head into the "Fantasy World:.

I do agree though, the old ways of Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale or Temple of Elemental Evil, single player games but what a roleplaying experience those games were and still are. Oh god, I can write a novel of my MMO, Fantasy, single player RPG, JRPGs which I love the most (I must have over 100 in my collection)next to all those figurines my wife is not fond of but will keep that for my retirement.........hehe!

Thank Goodness you can now play those in Enhance Editors from Steam and other sites.
