Happy Holidays to All.

I am curious to find out what games everyone here played and enjoyed the most this year and why?

Commander The Great War (until patch 1.3 which temporarily shelved the game for me) - A great little game, easy to pick-up and play without lots of tuition. Now the beta for 1.4 is out I am back playing again.

(Matrix) World In Flames - Simply the best wargame ever invented. An immensely challenging game that takes a lot of learning - but the learning curve is worth it because its just huge FUN!

Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm. One of those games that you know after an hour or so of playing you have an all time classic on your hands.

Wings Over Flanders Field. Another late release..but again prob the best Flight Sim I've played esp from a single player perspective. Oozes immersion. Shame my Rig is struggling.

Dominions 4. A total time sink. Another just one more turn and you can play for hours and still come across new stuff, infact I reckon you could olay this for a good couple of years and still not see everything.

Ace Patrol 1 and 2. A cheap fun surprise this one. The core flying mechanic could be used for something more Grog like though...if only.

My meh games where..

Conflict of Heroes..not the games fault really..just to abstract for me..and couldn't get immersed at all. Regret buying.

The Few..just way to hard for me.

Wargame Air land Battle..came in a bundle..my expectation was low..and it didn't reach that.

Batman Arkham origins...yawn..

Shadowrun returns..on paper it sounds so cool...the game though was pretty forgettable..hoping wasteland 2 has abit more umph to it.

sure there where others..lots of em..usually bundled games though so not much money wasted.

DerTroof -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 3:50:24 PM)

Between work and family commitments I didn’t spend as much time playing wargames as I would have liked. Played most of the East Front Panzer Corps GCs last year and the first part of this year, as it’s a game one can get into without investing a lot of time, easy to learn, pretty quick to play. Now I’m pretty burned out on it, though.

One thing I wanted to do, gaming-wise, was get into a new (to me) American Civil War title to honor the 150th anniversary. I picked up AGEOD’s first ACW game last Xmas but found it difficult to figure out. When Gary Grigsby’s War Between the States went on sale in July (Gettysburg 150th week) I picked it up and determined to learn it. I found the learning curve here pretty steep too (more so than need be, IMO), but I stuck with it for the next several weeks. While the individual game concepts were relatively straightforward, putting it all together took some work. The abundant video tutorials and comprehensive manual are great, but do a better job of explaining how the individual parts work than how to put it all together. It didn’t help that I have not played too many (any?) similar “leader-driven” games.

That said, I spent the better part of a couple months playing GGWBTS and thoroughly enjoyed it, absolutely no regrets about the purchase. However, now that I’ve put it down I doubt I will return to it. There are structural aspects to the game that make it frustrating and a slog at times, chiefly related to how maneuver and politics are handled (these issues have been discussed in the game forum too). In short, it plays more like a WW1 western front simulation that the ACW, IMO. But if Gary and Joel ever decide to do a WBTS2, I will be all over it.

I also intend to return to AGEOD’s ACW game (may upgrade to Civil War II when it goes on sale), but I’m currently learning Birth of America 2 first, as it is apparently a better entrée into the AGEOD system, which is unlike any other I’ve played.

Other titles I spent some time with:

Unity of Command – Impressed with the system, disappointed by the gamy scenarios.

Carriers at War – Fun and a (somewhat) unusual topic, but would have liked more control over the action, felt like an observer much of the time.

WITPAE – I don’t actually play this. I just look at it in fascination. It is my digital equivalent of ASL. [:D]

iPad Games – Both Shenandoah titles (I recommend these to wargamers for this platform) and some lighter stuff. Have Battle Academy on iPad, but haven’t had time to play it yet.

Recently been dabbling with Commander The Great War (looks like a blast), and Starships Unlimited 3 (wanted to try a 4X space game, and this looks like a good intro).

I have more unplayed games in my “queue” than I care to admit… to my wife at least. [8D]

This is a fun topic! Eager to read what others have been playing.

Merry Christmas, everybody. [:)]

KG Erwin -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 3:59:47 PM)

This year my most frequently played games have been:

1. Pure Sim Baseball 6
2. Birth of America 2: Wars in America
3. Steel Panthers: World at War (Enhanced version)
4. Age of Empires III

DanSez -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 5:45:31 PM)

Revolutions under Siege (vs Human PBEM)
Love the time frame - probably the best game adaption under the AGEOD-Engine IMHO. And I have a good friend also interested in bashing heads over this game.

Hearts of Iron 3 - Their Finest Hour (vs AI) My schedule doesn't allow for dedicated RTS game play.
Been an HOI fan since the original. AI has improved and like the mix of high and medium strategy. If you set your own 'house rules' to not exploit the game, it can be fun for many hours.

AJE/BOR?Parthian Wars (vs AI - want to find Human opponents soon)
Again the time frame and a good use of the AGEOD-Engine. I prefer WEGO games over IGOUG types -- which means I am thinking hard about the Flashpoint Series game as my next purchase.

WitP AE -- playing the shorter campaigns vs Human opponent. DEEEEP Strategic/logistic planning for the nuttiest of micro managers (you know who you are). Just love the research/depth/scope of the game and have recently found a good opponent with the same (low) level of experience to fight and learn with.

(forgot to say WHY--- edited)

z1812 -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 5:52:03 PM)

Combat Mission Battle for Normandy and Fortress Italy as well as Shock Force.

HPS Simulations the Squad Battles Series mostly Eastern Front.

Boomer78 -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 7:13:34 PM)

AJE/BOR - I'm a big fan of ancient history, and AGEOD's trip to the old days has kept me pretty satisfied.

Rome Total War - Roma Surrectum mod - Same reason but for the sheer fun of the tactical battles. The mod is tops on everyone's list, and it should be. CA could have learned a few things from that mod while making Rome II.

Crusader Kings II - I think it has to be Paradox's gold medal game. Everything in that game is just so much fun. There's just something visceral about watching your king try and marry his cousin and his entire family rising up in rebellion because of it.

Civil War II - Still mixed on this one. ACW II was probably my most anticipated game of the year, and I've put a ton of hours into it... but I'm still a bit cold on what was delivered. The AI needs work, the UI/graphics was a bit strange, and the overall feeling is that it is one step forward, two steps back for the series.

Hertston -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/24/2013 7:33:42 PM)

Strategy-wise I've played Red Storm and Solar War a lot, and Command and Conflict of Heroes a fair bit. I'm just now dunking into Civil War 2.

Other than that, for some reason budget purchase Defiance really grabbed me and I've over 120 hours playing that. Rocksmith still soaks up the hours, as does the utterly awesome Spelunky.

aaatoysandmore -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/25/2013 12:10:43 AM)

That's a good idea to have a chart to keep track of things like that. What did I play most of the time this year......hrmmm. I think it was a tie between Monopoly from Big Fish games or Clue from Hasbro. I must say the monopoly game from BFG is pretty tough compared to most wargame ai's today. I lost more than I won that's for sure.

Oh I forgot OOTPBB 13 I played a ton of years during march and april.

Lieste -> RE: 2013 Most Played Games (12/25/2013 2:07:20 AM)

CMD Ops (Panther Games): mostly endless re-runs of "Return to St Vith" ~ one of the joys of testing. Still fresh every time though due to the rich variety of responses to "similar" operation plans, both by friendly and enemy forces (not to consider the changes in balance and flow with iterations of the patching process). The best wargame engine that I've played and still actively ungoing development, expansion and augmentation. Other scenarios run through *this* year include some testing of HTTR scenarios, and play-for-fun of Hofen Ho Down. Best simulation of the OODA cycle and it's importance (and sometimes irrelevance ~ sometimes "getting there with the mostest" trumps "being there firstest with the mostest")

Armored Brigade (Independent): tactical real time "modern war" wargame. Not all encompassing, and some currently unresolved issues with limited AI and visibility.

Steelbeasts ProPE 3.0 (ESimGames): modern war simulation tanks and combined arms. Continuing development balanced between the needs of military contracts and the 'personal' entertainment version.

SWAT 3 Last Resort (Origins? & Modded): for a bit of light relief when in 'thinking time' between research/analysis and testing of the above.

The majority of "game time" spent in Excel, or Firefox performing analysis of theory or logged results, or looking for data to fill gaps in that previously found, or to correct apparent discrepancies.

Other games not used recently include ROF, IL2'46.

What is the EMU on Everquest?

It's short for emulator. I am unsure if I am supposed to say anything here about it, other than I paid for the original game and played it for 10 years or so. The emulator is sort of a throwback server that only goes through 2 expansions. "Classic".
