ChadS -> Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/28/2013 10:31:09 PM)

Hello,

I've taken the plunge into an AI game as the Japanese. I've been reading Mike Solli's AAR, as well as others, and using the Japan Setup spreadsheet Kull created.

What I'm wondering, though, is if someone can provide me with some big picture guidelines or milestones for playing Japan?

Not being entirely familiar with the use of Oil and Resources in the game, I'm not sure where I should be taking resources/oil from, and where it should be headed. I have to admit, it's been a while since I read the Industry section of the rulebook, and I'll revisit that tonight, but I don't recall it giving too much detail.

Also, I obviously need to subjugate the East Indies, Java, Borneo, Philippines, Celebes, etc., but I'm not clear if there are other strategic goals that I should making note of, as well.

The spreadsheet I've been using focuses a lot on conversions to PBs, etc., and I'm not entirely sure I understand why some of these would need to be done. I'm not against doing these kinds of changes, but I'm also wondering if, for a first time through, they are entirely necessary.

Thanks you very much for any input!

Japanese Milestones
1. Attack Pearl Harbor.
2. Prepare to die.

Feltan

I would say the DEI is obviously the minimum necessary. The key to the DEI is Singapore, so I would make that very high on your list along with Palembang. Luzon can wait.

Beyond the DEI, a lot depends on your strategy, but most players secure part of the Aluetians, the Solomons and the Gilberts in phase I. How far you want to go in China is another consideration. The northern plains are pretty easily taken first.

Later targets include NW Australia and whatever you want for Phase II. However, don't just take things willy nilly - have a plan and execute it for sound strategic reasons.

To build on what Cribtop said. Darwin is mportant to have and can be denied to the enemy for quite a while. This will help protect your oil. The further down the South Pacific you can go helps. Noumea, and Pago Pago is a nice place to end up, but you are really extended there. Taking Ceylon is a nice gig and the longer you can hold it the better. In the Aleutians Cold Harbor is a good place to hold. You have to take all of Burma and hold it for as long as you can. In China, if you can take all of China up to and including Paoshan then you are doing just fine.

That said, doing all of this is a pretty hard thing to accomplish for all but the best Japanese player. To have a chance you are going to have to learn your opponent's weaknesses and then make moves that will counter his strengths while sandbagging a bit in areas where you suspect he is not focused.

One constant, lose access to your oil supply too early and you will lose big time. Better to have him lope off a limb that cut your heart out....Now write this down. Don't let the Allies take Siboret Island.[;)]

Thanks for the help. I'm still struggling with understanding how to decide where to move resources, oil, etc., but I've decided that probably the best way to learn is to play a few turns, and see where that stuff needs to go when I start seeing shortages. I'm hoping I'll see the patterns that develop, and better understand how to move the resources to the appropriate places. Next up for me, learning the auto-convoy system.

This is the critical aspect for a Japanese player and in an email game it is important to have it right from the very start. I suggest that you install tracker and then have ask a veteran Japanese player review your economic flow chart right away. Just ask on the main forum page and I am sure somebody will help. I say this only because it in the one area that you need to set up right at the beginning.

+1

And of course, you really, really need an overall strategy at the start as well ... it can (most likely will) change, but as IJ you really need to have one.

Don't bother with this, set up your own stuff. CS convoys are great, but the auto-convoy system has much to be desired.

SqzMyLemon -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/30/2013 8:57:28 PM)

On an economic note, most Japanese players shoot for 1,000,000 HI pooled by the end of 1942. Good pools of supply and HI are a must for the late game as you will lose industrial capacity as the Allies move forward.

Grfin Zeppelin -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/30/2013 10:11:45 PM)

Have a look at any place that produces oil, one of your goals is to keep the economy running. Also these PBs are converted because Japan lacks escorts and you dont want to use your fleet destroyers to escort resources convoys.

As IJ, the auto-convoy will cost you a lot of xAK's ... it is reallly a tool for the allies, not the IJ. CS Convoys are what you need to use and then you need to review them periodically (monthly, pick a day) to be sure they are appropriate and safe.

Lokasenna -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/31/2013 8:16:03 PM)

Most of your Resources deficit in Japan proper can be handled by the surplus production in Hokkaido, the Sakhalins, and Manchukuo. Additionally, Hokkaido has a large bank of Resources at the start. I always draw down that bank in the first 2 months before setting up for the long haul. Install Tracker (I use Kull's region definitions) and look at the Resource, Oil, and Fuel deficits in Japan. Compare those to the surplusesin otherregions to figure out how much of each you need to haul from which port to which port. Then look at the CS Convoy Planning tab. This will help you figure out how many ships and convoys you will need on each route. All this info is under Industry on Tracker's dropdown menu.

ChadS -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/31/2013 8:29:35 PM)

I think I know the answer, but what is the difference in CS: Convoy and auto-convoy?

Thanks!

pws1225 -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (12/31/2013 9:33:52 PM)

And +1 to what Lokasenna says. There are loads of resources close by in Hokkaido, etc. to carry you for a long while. Oil, on the other hand, will have to come from the DEI. So early on, keep your tankers safely tucked away until you have taken the DEI an it's oil centers, and allied TFs aren't sniffing about the shipping lanes between the DEI and HI.

[Edited to remove dumb statement and to add:] CS convoys are TFs you build to run a route that you define and the computer will keep them running and running and running (good fo shuttling supplies forward from the home islands to supply hubs around the empire. Auto convoys are TFs that the AI defines based on the AI's perceived needs. I'm not certain, but I don't think many players use Auto-convoys.

Numdydar -> RE: Requesting some Japanese Milestones (1/24/2014 3:26:25 PM)

I use AC pretty extensively as Japan. Especially since their coding has been vastly improved in the Betas [:)]. I find them very useful to supply out of the way places that I forget about or pickup resourse from the same. Just make sure your forward bases autosupply function is set to No in the base screen and you should be fine using AC.
