Dankind -> Newbieland swamps and SL (12/29/2013 12:58:27 PM)

Hi all,

I'm new to WIF, having never played the print version, and I am loving it. Right now I'm wrapping up my first Barbarossa campaign and I have a few quick questions I can't seem to find answers for anywhere... hoping someone may be able to help!

1. When I rail move into the swamp (Pripet) my units always appear to become disorganized and stop moving after the first hex. Is this an effect of the swamp, or should the rails negate that? I can't seem to rail move at all in there.

2. I'm using a two-screen display with my laptop and a desktop monitor. Whenever I save a screen layout, it always cuts the main part of the map off on the larger desktop display. If I move everything to the smaller primary screen of the laptop, it fits. Not sure what I may be doing wrong. I have my screen settings set to max rez and fonts set to the smallest size.

3. The MV window constantly pops up between my two screens, splitting itself, and stays that way until I move it. Not a big deal, but it happens every time the program autopops that window(which feels like all the time!)

In case I didn't express it enough, this game is amazing. Many thinks to Steven and the entire crew.

Cheers!

About Rail moves. All rail moves disorganize the unit when you move them. That's the way rail moves work.

The swamps also require a high amount of movement when moving normally, unless they are in snow or blizzard when they count as forest.

Courtenay -> RE: Newbieland swamps and SL (12/29/2013 3:07:37 PM)

When you rail move anywhere, your units should become disorganized. Rail movement always disorganizes the moving unit. You can only rail a non-HQ unit to a station: a city, a port, or a HQ. There aren't many of those in swamps. It sounds to me like you are not rail moving, but using normal movement moving along a rail line, which is a completely different thing. When you make a normal move, if you have any remaining movement points, you may move into any adjacent legal hex*. If you have fewer remaining movement points than the hex's terrain cost, you may still move into the hex, but will become disorganized. (The cursor will tell you if are about to do this. I frequently don't notice until it is too late.) Go to the terrain effects chart (in the help menu). See what the cost of swamp hexes is. There aren't many units that can move in swamps without being disorganized; if one is using motorized movement costs (almost everyone does) a few fast cavalry units come to mind, and that's about it. Unless one is using the railway movement bonus optional rule (I don't), rails have no effect whatsoever on ordinary movement. If you are using the rule, it still won't help in swamp; the movement costs are just too high.

*Legal hex: A hex that is not a hex dot, in the Qattara Depression, off the top or bottom of the board, in a neutral country, an unfrozen all lake hex, a hex that violates foreign troop commitment limits, a hex occupied by enemy units you are not overrunning, a hex across an alpine hexside (except for MTN units), or a hex across an unfrozen sea or lake hexside (except for MAR units). Currently MWiF will not let you move in violation of stacking, even though in some circumstances it is temporarily legal under RAW.

I can't help you with the two screen layout; I use a single large monitor.

Thanks for the explanation... Immensely helpful! I think your assessment of my mistake is spot on, Courtenay.

2. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting but were you attempting to have the main map span across both monitors? I'd have to experiment with that to see if that works. From experience, the best results are obtained by having the Main Form and Detailed map together on the Primary (larger) monitor. You can use the smaller monitor for some of the other forms, or the Global map or even a second Detailed map. This likely means that when you want to play MWiF you'll want the desktop screen to be the Primary. This can be done, but when the laptop is next used by itself, it may "forget" those settings.

3. The SLY needs to be saved for each major power. That should include the location of the MV form as they are defined on a per major power basis.

Dankind -> RE: Newbieland swamps and SL (12/29/2013 5:41:56 PM)

Paulderynck, I'm not trying to have the map span. I just want it full-screen on the large monitor, but whenever I save that SL (regardless of the side), the top of the map (with the map controls) are cut off... This means I can't move the window and I can't click the full-screen button, or close it out. I end up having to click the "new game" SL which puts all of the windows onto my laptop screen and then I have to move everything over and re-size.

It is difficult to understand pictures using words. Can you take a screen shot (or two)?

If you redefine a Screen Layout/SLY file, that redefinition is only for the current major power. To get the MV form to appear where you want it, you will likely have to redefine it for each of the major powers - that is, when each of the major powers is the deciding major power.

I still have the SLY problem with two different size monitors on my to-do list. The work-around is to place the Main form on the larger monitor.

Dankind -> RE: Newbieland swamps and SL (12/29/2013 11:37:42 PM)

After playing around for a bit, I think I have the MV issue in hand.

Moving the Main form to the larger monitor did the trick for the map being cut off, although it still likes to hide behind the map when retrieved. Looking forward to that update! If I save the SLY with the main form on the left (smaller) monitor, it always crops the map on the right monitor when I retrieve. Figuring out how to post a pic now.

Thanks for all the help gents!

Here's how it looks.

Try resizing the detailed map so the top is at the bottom of the Main form.

Go is one game I have never been very good at. I have a chess rating over 2000 but when I played Go against a poor chess player the result was laughable. Probably I need to put in a couple of years learning how to play decently.[:D]

Dankind -> RE: Newbieland swamps and SL (12/30/2013 8:17:10 PM)

The area strategy of Go is so counter to what Chess is all about. While I love it, I'm certainly not very good.

I'll give the map resize a shot. I'm still floundering with layouts. Part of it is that I don't know what I'll need the most, but after finishing up Barbarossa (and just horribly representing Germany), I'm starting to see what windows I need more than others. I've also noticed a strange thing where the unit tray doesn't show up when it's time to place new units. It prompts placement, but the window is nowhere to be found. I have to reload the standard SLY for it to pop back to life, then I move and resize everything.

paulderynck -> RE: Newbieland swamps and SL (12/30/2013 10:34:52 PM)

My experience with multiple monitors is that weird things will happen unless the Main Form is kept above the Detailed Map, and both are on the Primary monitor.
