Meroka37 -> [DONE] Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 10:30:46 AM)

Third scenario, in this one a Soviet boomer leaves port and transit to her assigned patrol area... some enemy subs are lurking in her path...

Russian Heel -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 11:05:21 AM)

Might want to check the behavior on the American subs. 2 minutes 26 seconds into the scenario 6 TSAMs inbound at my Koni. Seems like odd behavior for a sub captain on station outside of a boomer base waiting in ambush to reveal he is there by attacking a Pickett ship that hasn't detected him and is moving away from him.

Meroka37 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 11:24:50 AM)

Changed some ROE to avoid this over agressiveness, new scenario versión in first post, thanks for the comment.

Russian Heel -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 1:51:37 PM)

Wow, that's a tough scenario, need to re think my options before breaking the boomer out of the mine lane.

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 6:50:15 PM)

This one is very interesting, my Delta runs away from the mines initially(auto-evasion), these subs still attack my ships with harpoons, my sonobuoys have a hard time detecting them, even when within 100m, and my Kilo is basically a mere listening platform because its torpedos can't engage submarines.

It is challenging, well done! [;)]

Btw one of the enemy subs uses radar(AN/BPS-15A), but it doesn't matter because my ESM platforms are totally confused and can't figure out where it is. [:D]

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (12/31/2013 7:07:02 PM)

Using radar actually works well for them, it creates ambiguous contacts which jump around all over the map, and my Delta fires torpedos at them even though doctrine is set to pessimistic.

One of the Il-38s also behaves oddly, i unassigned it from the ASW mission to chase contacts manually, but it keeps on setting new courses as if for a search pattern.

I upload a savegame for the Devs to look at, you can see the ambig. con in front of the Delta, the torps were fired earlier in similar circumstances.

Noticed that your airfields are composites, if you want to improve game speed etc and the bases arent to be targets, then single unit airfields are the way ahead.

I downloaded the (updated?) scenario this morning (01.01.14: 06.40 GMT) and an 'undetected sub' happily sank SKR Koni [Pr.1159] within 3 minutes of the scenario start. As Russian Heel remarked this seems a fairly unlikely course of action.

Gunner98 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/1/2014 8:54:52 AM)

Tough little scenario, my Boomer was busy running away from a Trident class sub, was afraid it was going to run right back into the minefield but another sub got it instead. Detected the Trident with sonabouys, after it had launched a spread of torpedoes, I vectored in the little escort vessel and two May's, the escort took a torp and disappeared. The depth charges dropped but didn't do anything, could not get the other May to launch!

A Trident class sub?, humm, I think the sonarmen need more training [:D][:D]. No Trident class present in the scenario...

Bazza042 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/2/2014 5:27:05 AM)

I finished this scenario in 12 minutes 25 seconds - is this a record?

The minor problem was that I lost.[:'(]

Having multiple contacts, and limited weaponry to try to tackle the attacking subs I had thought to hold the boomer
until the aircraft had the opportunity to try to establish the true position. Not a good move. In ten minutes the
Kilo and the heroes in the SKR Koni had gone (can they survive more than five minutes?) and in twelve the boomer followed.

Apart from being unsure why the Red Banner fleet, despite warning specifically of submarine activity, only put a single
naval asset with anti-submarine capability in the 'escort', I am thoroughly enjoying this scenario although still to
register a 'win'. So many things to try (and lose....)

GBS -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/5/2014 1:37:27 PM)

Not possible to win. Whats the fun in that.[&:]Tried 5 times now moving on to another scenario.

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/5/2014 6:16:58 PM)

It is possible to win, i would even consider cutting the time to mission to apply more pressure. Don't do the same you would do with Nato subs, their sonars are better and they drive very slow, think out of the box.

Bazza042 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/6/2014 4:50:06 AM)

I would agree that it is possible to win but I am hampered by the boomer having a mind of its own whilst in the channel between the mines. I set it to follow a course through the minefield at the same speed as the accompanying ship. Normally I set periscope depth.

However on a number of occasions, some while into the scenario, I suddenly find that the sub has turned 180 degrees, come to a full stop and descended to the 'bottom' of the channel. At that point no amount of manual intervention with speed, course or altitude commands can persuade it to move. Yet at other times, with the same set of commands, the sub follows happily along after its accompanying ship and exits the channel safely.

I did think to start with that it was adopting defensive methods whilst attacks were going on elsewhere, mainly on the Koni, but that doesn't explain the inability to give manual orders for speed, depth and direction.

My last try really hacked me off. I managed to save the Koni, nailed the Valiant with a torpedo after ringing it with sonarbouys and getting a definite fix then found the boomer stationary, sitting in the bottom, with its direction indicator pointing back into the port. No amount of manual commands, restarting or whatever would persuade the sucker to move. And thus disappeared my first 'win': was I pissed[:@]

Has anyone else experienced the boomer issues?

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/6/2014 6:05:23 AM)

Yeah i had Boomer trouble, she ran away south, i believe from the mines or maybe the hostile subs, after disabling auto-evasion she obeyed. Try disabling auto-evasion. Interesting though that boomer AI is so careful to avoid possible enemy contacts.

Bazza042 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/6/2014 2:55:30 PM)

Many thanks, Mr Burns,

Never crossed my mind to do that........

The only problem now is getting back into that (happy) position again........

MR_BURNS2 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/6/2014 3:31:00 PM)

After i started thinking about what to do with the Kilo and my surplus of non-anti submarine wake-homing torpedos and completely reversing my tactics it became rather easy, i don't want to spoil it too much so i say only 1 thing: Fire for Effect.

Is that your background Gunner98?

Gunner98 -> RE: Red Episodes- Boomer to Sea (1/7/2014 12:13:35 AM)

Yes, but let me put my hearing aids in so I know what your saying [:D]

Retiring in a couple months.

Worked with an Austrian in Kabul a couple of years ago, trying to remember his name.
