gsmith63 -> Two Patrol Mission Questions or Suggestions (1/2/2014 5:02:58 AM)

I’ve got a couple of questions about aircraft missions:

1. While some types of patrols (ASW for example) may be handled by single aircraft, others like AAW or SEAD would almost always be handled by groups of two or more a/c. Is there a way to manually group aircraft on patrol missions? I could swear I’ve seen something on this but can’t find anything via forum search. If not I’d love to see something added in the future.

2. I’d love for there to be a way to have the AI opponent use a plane for more than one mission. For example, if a plane is assigned a SEAD strike on a SAM battery and that SAM is destroyed, it would seem to be a waste for the plane to sit there with nothing else to do for the rest of the game! Is there a way to do this that I haven’t figured out?

As a solution to number 2, could you not set the aircraft on an active SEAD mission with a secondary inactive mission, then set a trigger to make the inactive mission active if the target of the SEAD strike is destroyed?

AFAIK a plane goes RTB after mission is over. You can always assign it to another mission of course and maybe it will chase after other targets if you're working with targets of opportunity (haven't tried that myself yet)

1. You can 'launch as group' then assign that group to the mission. Its a bit tedious but better than trying to collect them and hit the 'G' key once they are airborne

2. It would be very nice if you could do this - but you cannot. The suggestion in post 2 doesn't work as you need to assign your AI aircraft before game start and they cannot be assigned twice. A/C will fly multiple times on the same mission however, so a very general mission may achieve your aim. For e.g.: Strike missions over a large area, Patrol missions with 'investigate outside patrol area' checked. The scenario designer has very little control on the AI activity using these methods. Support missions will fly continuously or just once depending on how you set it, so will Patrol missions.

One variation on Post 2, that I have not tested, but it might work, hopefully someone could clear it up if they have: Assign A/C to a mission as normal - mission complete A/C parks. At a later point a mission activates with the Base assigned to it, hopefully the A/C on that base respond - has anyone tested this?

I have not tested either but couldn't you assign AI aircraft on Strike missions with no target selected or SEAD patrol with ref points encompassing large potential areas(with more than one threat), than I think they will launch, engage, RTB, re-arm, and start the cycle over again until all targets(or themselves) are destroyed. Wouldn't be very planned or efficient for the AI but at least they're not sitting there.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I was looking more for solutions on the AI opponent side. Rudd might have the best answer to question #2 so far!

Hi.

1. Launch the aircraft and group them (or use launch as group).Add the group to the mission.

2. Not yet. We're looking at add and drop unit actions in the event editor but honestly get hung up on a few critical issues that popped up. We want this too so stay tuned.

Thanks for posting in!

Thanks Mike. Glad to hear you guys are working #2! As for #1, is there any way to have the AI opponent launch, say, AAW patrols in groups of two a/c instead of single units? If not I'd definitely love to add this to the feature request list.
