A whole-home surge suppressor is much more effective than the power strip variety, and they are *easy* to install in your main fuse box, and under $200 for the good ones. Turn off the main breaker and you can install one in about 15 minutes. Also, make sure your home really has a ground to earth for any surge suppressor to be effective. It's probably just the PCBs on the drives that are bad. If you have any good drives of the *exact* make model and revision in some other computing equipment, you can swap the PCBs to get the drive up and running for data recovery. This is why I buy all my drives at least two at a time, just in case I need to swap electronics. Sorry to hear about your experience. Hopefully the next year is better.
