I've been trying to successfully record video for a Let's Play series I'm working on. When I use Fraps, some screen elements are not recorded, for instance the main info panel at the bottom left. Don't ask me how that's possible, but it is. Switching to Bandicam everything works visually, but no game-sound will be recorded.

What is is with Matrix Games and recording? Getting Gary Grigsby's War in the East to record was hard, but this is kicking my butt. Has anyone ever tackled these issues?

I'm not going to be very helpful, in that I have no idea how to solve the problems you mentioned, but I can tell you that these problems are certainly surmountable: just look at the videos in the AAR section of this board, and you will see that those who have come before you have prevailed.

Hi CptEggman

I also had the same problems trying out fraps. Bandicam was the ticket for me.

As far as sound, I have no problems. Although I do remember having to monkey with the settings a bit to get it going.

In Bandicam, click the Video Tab and click the settings button in the "record" area. That will bring up another window with some various settings including sound. Make sure the "Record Sound" box is checked then set your Primary and Secondary sound devices within that same screen to suit your hardware.

There is another Settings button under Format which allows you to set your recording quality.

If you've already been through all this with no luck, then I apologize as I have no further ideas...

Best of luck, and can't wait to see your video for this fantastic game! [8D]

Many game recorders like fraps count on the game using a "exclusive game window" to record the game. Many of Matrix 2D strategy games just use standard desktop window for games. Distant Worlds seems to use a mix, as you say some parts of the screen is recorded but not the UI.

Fraps have a function "Monitor Aero Desktop DWM", you could use to record such games in Windows 7. Doesn't work with Windows 8+, as Aero is gone and Fraps cannot record Windows 8 desktop. If you have Windows 7, try turning it on and see if it changes anything.

After watching a few Let's Plays before buying this game, some of the guys let out that FRAPS does not work well with this product.

Ask Larry Monte what he used, or Das - they will help you out.

Oh, wait, StarLab already replied - cool beans.

I use BandiCam but have a very particular set-up I use for recording Distant Worlds. I had to write it down for myself because it needs to be set-up for each recording session.

Change the resolution of your monitor to 1366x768px (less than this and some of the dialogues don't show, more than this and the text can be too small for reading on smaller screens).

Set Bandicam to record "Rectangle on Screen" mode and make this full screen. This will then capture all the dialogue screens in the game.

In the video format setting I make the size fit height of 720 but that is up to you what you want to do with that.

I don't change my sound settings but these are set Win 7 Sound as my primary device and my microphone as the secondary device. I use two sound mixing into a single audio track. This is the setting I use for all game recordings.

Then just play the game in full screen and record.

Hope that helps. It gives me the best result for my videos but took a little trial and error to get it working. :)

Hmm, I use OBS ( http://obsproject.com/ ) to stream, I wonder if I can stream-to-file and have it work. Will try to check it out tomorrow when I get a chance.

Yes Das123, I got it working thanks to your checklist - at least for now! [;)]
