Ive already posted this in the command sub forum, but ive started a blog on all this military and i'd like some feedback. Its early days for me but i'd appreciate some views http://worlddefenceservice.blogspot.co.uk/

Your analysis is basically non-existent. You say you are worried about a Russian Cruiser sailing around in international waters without really explaining why anyone should care. You admit that a large scale war against a navy capable of striking the UK is unlikely (it is, the only country that could pull it off is the US and if we're somehow at war with them then we've lost no matter what) but nevertheless somehow assert that we 'need' two carriers. Hint: Carriers aren't used for coastal protection, they're about power projection and our 'need' for them has to be measured in terms of how much we want to project military power. You use changes in numbers of ships as if they are like-for-like. You mention the Falklands but as anyone remotely aware of the current state of a) the forces stationed on the Falklands and b) the current state of the Argentinian navy will tell you, if we go to war with Argentina again(we won't) we won't even need any ships near the Falklands to defend it. The elephant in the room with regards to the decision to operate a carrier for ten years without any planes to fly off it is that it's a perfectly sensible decision given that the UK has no short-to-medium term threats whatsoever that we could possibly need a carrier for.

Alchenar, Yeah I understand what your saying. I'm new to all this so I doubt I'll be getting a Pulitzer prize anytime soon. Thanks for the feedback anyway. This blog isn't really to gain anything. I'm just using it as a hobby and to get some discussions going.

Interesting blog. I'm curious about your focus on naval vessels, and the length of their initial service and where they eventually go after a country is done with them. Though not naval vessels, the U.S. Coast Guard has recently sold 2 High Endurance cutters to the Philippines so they can address the territorial claims by China. In that same topic, the Japanese have built a new class of destroyer (it's more of a LHASA) for the same reason. Keep up the blog though, it's a decent start.

Eh, when all those ships get their rivets and spare parts from factories in China, does it really matter any more? The game has gone so beyond air or naval superiority it's like apples and oranges now. The real battles are being fought in government legislative bodies, and more importantly, on the chaotic floors of Wall St. and London. Give it another 10-20 years and we'll be talking about the early days of the Skynet AI military. The Air Force has already drawn up white papers wanting to have the entire mobile air command to be automated within 20 years. When you want to see the real projection of power today and into the future, you're almost better off consulting James Cameron than Colin Powell.
