To me, HMS Hood is the most esthetically pleasing non-sail warship ever built. I have the same photo of her in my office.

I personally think those battleships look much more aesthetically pleasing and majestic than a carrier.

There is a magnificent model of her in the museum in St. john Nfld.....about 5' long. Pre-war Nfld not part of Canada and a pile of Newfies went down on her as I recall. (or maybe I should say went down with her)

One brother on the Hood, one as a medic in Burma, one in the merchant marine, and the youngest as an AA gunner on the home front. The one on the Hood was the only one lost, but both my Mom and her sister married and moved -- my Mom to the US, and her sister to Oz. Sadly, they are all gone now. Regards, Feltan

Well I never knew him, he was gone twenty years before I was born. One can only hope the end came quickly. The one that was in the merchant marine was a character and a half. Had one ship sunk under him in the Atlantic, and was taken off a second before she was scuttled. He said the loudest thing he ever heard was a torpedo exploding. He told me, I was never able to determine if it was in jest, that when a convoy he was in was under attack he'd look for the escorts -- and then go to the opposite side of the ship and cover his ears. The medic in Burma spend most of his time in Calcutta. He volunteered once. Ended up deploying with the Chindits. According to him, that put an end to volunteering for anything. After the war, and until retirement, he was a physician's assistant for a geriatric ward at a hospital outside London. I visited him there in the '70's. Two enduring memories: one of him and a completely senile fighter pilot from WWI having a "dog-fight" in wheel chairs in the dining area (sound effects and all); good for morale according to my uncle. And second -- something you would never see in the US -- the entire place clearing out into the courtyard to welcome the arrival of the daily visit by the beer truck. Not kidding. Nothing like a bunch of codgers lining up for a black and tan with canes and wheel chairs. Regards, Feltan

[:D] I still like the Hood hull better than the "C"'s, it has the advantage of length which makes it more elegant. but the English never had any flair to design the superstructures, almost always end in a boxy form. I've heard forever about this aesthetic appretiation for Hood. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but the only thing I can get a boner over (anymore[:'(]) is the Iowa class BB with an honorable mention for the Brooklyn class CL. I know that the Iowa is a fat hog but I like her tusks. Also at the same time she looks more like a racehorse in several ways. I've never visited one of them but hope to before I die.

If you compare Hood with her contemporaries, she was much more modern looking than just about anything else out there. When Hood was commissioned he same years as the USS Tennessee in the USN. The US also commissioned quite a number of 4 piper DDs that year. This is just my opinion, of course, but I think that most classes of surface ships commissioned from the late 30s through WW II tended to looked better than anything from the WW I era. Bill
