Rhodan -> just for the heck of it (3/7/2001 8:13:00 AM)

While playing a WWII campaign I realized that the campaigns I like most are the ones in which I have a (relatively) small group of units, being in my element with about 2000-3000 points. Being the curious bloke that I am ("are you SURE that engine won't work on sugar?") I was wondering what the points are you like to play with. Perhaps that bit of info is useful for the campaign/sceneario designers? So what will it be? 2-5K..or the bigger ones like 10K and up? Rho

Ya - 3000 points is usually what I like for the WW2 campaign. I get 2 mixed companies of Armor, 2 platoons of infantry, one engineer platoon, some trucks for them to convert to half-tracks later, some mortars with an ammo dump, 2 or 4 AT guns with tranport, and top it all off with AT and MG teams. I get different kinds of recon with the support units depending on the battle - they are expendible!! Figmo

Will starting in 39 I will go with 1600 points and with that I can get my two Platoons of armour and the support units I need. Makes it a chanllange when you got to destroy 60 to 80 AI armour units with two platoons If I were to start in 43 I would go with 2000 to 2600 points no more.

Hi, I go for a certain force with whatever Army I am using not a point value. 3 Infantry Companies 3 Tank Platoons 1 Recon Platoon (armoured car or lt tank) 1 Sec AT guns 1 Sec AA Guns 1 Platoon Engineer 1 FO 1 Sec Scouts Per Infantry Company 3 Snipers (fun to see how long you can keep alive and still use them to advantage-top sniper so far in long campaign had 8 kills) 1 motar platoon 1 MG platoon I do not buy any organic transport but in advance or assault use support points to rent them I always buy 1 btry 105mm guns as support. Remember the larger your core is the larger the force you give the AI (you know those battles where your arm falls off while doing OP fire for a week each turn?) ------------------ I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a differant direction!

MindSpy -> (3/7/2001 4:27:00 PM)

1000 is fine by me.

Figmo -> (3/7/2001 8:58:00 PM)

Another thing to keep in mind is where and who you are going to fight. If you're going to the Pacific Theater of Operations - get more Engineers and less tanks. If you're going to Fight the Czechs with you being the Germans - the same thing - your Tanks are no match for theirs!! And the AI seems to pick a lot more of their tanks for them than for other countries. Figmo

Larry Holt -> (3/7/2001 9:21:00 PM)

I'd like a big (20,000 point) core but where are you going to put it? That kind of force just fills up the generated maps and leaves no room for maneuver. So, I find a company of tanks, a company of mixed infantry/engineers some ATGs and SP AT & assault guns for fun & some arty for combined arms effect. ------------------ An old soldier but not yet a faded one. OK, maybe just a bit faded.

Charles22 -> (3/8/2001 12:52:00 AM)

I think Larry and I are basically on the same page, but I will translate my force as generally starting between 3200-3500pts. Later in the war, if one was to start a campaign there, the numbers should be higher to get the same amount of units. Sometimes though, there are some countries, because of excessively cheap second-rate tanks, that my starting value is too much for, and then I end up buying expensive units I sort of don't want (like artillery). Even though there isn't half the fun of upgrading as there was in the Panzer Strike days, even with a force that may be able to afford 1/2 million Matilda IIs or what have you, I still prefer no more than a platoon or two of the best tanks starting out, just so the next battle leaves something to be looked forward to.

Pack Rat -> (3/8/2001 4:02:00 AM)

I started a campaign last night just to remember what it was like. Points still depend on the time period for me, but follow a general course no matter what the time period. Last night was about 3500 in 43, me as the Germans vs the Soviets. I had plenty to do what I needed to do. I don't buy tanks in platoons anymore no matter what the game (pbem/AI). I've yet to fill all the slots so I pick sections, this gives me more chances to rally. Four sections of armor with about two sections of my current experiment ie, flametanks, tank destroyers, assault guns, gliders, etc. or what ever I'm trying at the moment. So my total armor is between 8 and 12 units. About four sections mobile AA, when the air threat ceases they are hell against infantry and light armor and have often saved the day. One platoon infantry per armor section. Artillery depends, it's sort of the experiment of the day thing, lately on board stuff with ammo trucks. I always get a FO, in a pbem it may be a reserve but I always get one. I do buy ammo trucks for the core. I play with reduced ammo on and don't know how many times against the Soviets I've had to "reload" infantry, small mortars and main battle tanks, let alone the "nesting" of artillery, they are very busy units. I'd like to see the reduced ammo button a percentage so they would be even more important. When I first saw wagons listed I thought I'd never use them, I do. Very handy for moving mortars to ammo points or out of harms way and of course getting infantry across that open area, fast. I prefer trucks but I never seem to have all the battle points I'd like. Any extra points goes to infantry. In a campaign I don't bother with any elites unless it's the only way they come. In the battle last night I picked my old tried and true Stugs for my starting core armor and they performed well, touch and go in certain spots for a while but I only lost one to 35 Soviet tanks killed. The Stugs allow me the pleasure of the upgrade and the decisions involved. I don't know how many times I've just sat at the buy screen putting core units together only to never fight the battle and loving every minute of it. ------------------ PR http://electricwar.tripod.com/

I agree with Pack Rat's last line of text. There is something about aquiring your original core units that is quite captivating, frankly it's one of the highlights in any game I played os far..that and the other highlight right after it "aw damn I forgot to get those xxxxxx" and it's usually those 'aww damn' moments that give me some good fun. As Wild Bill pointed out in another thread of posts, there is something to be said in favor of a group of units that is not a perfect mix of the best material available.

McGib -> (3/8/2001 9:19:00 AM)

I prefer small campaigns. Currently I'm experimenting with 1 tank plt, 1 arm inf plt, light recon, and a couple of mortars. Versus German AI the US didnt stand a chance, 1 plt of M4A3's just couldnt hold up against 2 plts of PzIVg's and a plt of PzIIIj's. Trying the Germans out now. At least the # of AI units are kept down. ------------------ McGib Ready Aye Ready

BA Evans -> (3/8/2001 10:27:00 PM)

I usually go for about 3,000 points. This usually allows me to buy plenty of units and even to throw in a couple of experimental items. Lately, I have been testing early anti-tank rifles. They are good against very light vehicles, but don't do anything against 'real' tanks. Now I know why there was a lot of developement in this area as the war wore on. BA Evans

panda124c -> (3/9/2001 8:11:00 PM)

I like it small usually: 1 Company of foot Infantry 1 Sec. of AT 1 Sec. of Inf Gun 1 Platoon of tanks 1 Platoon of Selfpropelled AA plus transport for the ATGs and Inf Gun

RUsco -> (3/9/2001 9:13:00 PM)

Trying out 1 FO 1 Med Mortar Sec 2 Inf Plt 3 Tank Plt 1 SP Gun sec 1 TD sec 1 AAA Sec So far seems to work good

Yeah, that is a problem, I just edit every battle, and put in huge custom maps, like PackRat, I get more of a kick out of building a battle/units/map, than actually playing it sometimes!! ------------------ Mike Amos Meine Ehre Heisst Treue
