It's October 1942. I am playing Allied against the Japanese AI. I have 30 P-70 Havoc Night Fighters available in the aircraft pools. I've checked all the squadrons I can think of, but I can't find one that will allow me to upgrade to this aircraft.

I've also checked the squadron reinforcement schedule, but nothing shows up.

If anyone could share what squadrons that can use this aircraft, that would really be appreciated.

My plan is to upgrade one squadron, divide it into three sections, and deploy them to Cox's Bazar/Chittagong/Imphal to be used as Night CAP to help disrupt those pesky Lily and Sally night bombing raids.

18th FG/6th FS, I think it's initially based in the 7th AF (Pearl Harbor).

There are some other night fighter squadrons that arrive. They are numbers in the 400s. I forget the exact numbers.

In addition to the one mentioned above I currently have the
418th NFS
421st NFS
That can use that airframe (currently in Dec 1943)

Again, thanks for the feedback. Confession, I wasn't watching for new aircraft models in the reinforcement pools, kinda busy with all the other details. I didn't expect to see night fighters so soon.

Personally I usually hold off on sending P70s to Burma as the Brits will get some NFs a month or two after they show up...they may come be more handy to have around the SouthWest Pac theater...

And don't expect too much performance out of the night fighters. I don't know if it's result of the game engine or what , but it seems as if day fighters used at night , or night fighters used at night give pretty much the same results. At least that's been my experience. [:(]


And BTW , welcome aboard Louisvillan![:D] Are you a OS1? [&:] We need to start a 1st class association around here![:D]

Concur in general AW1Steve, however...it does seem if you have some CAP up at night it definitely disrupts the bombers who then cause less damage. I save the NFs for what looks to be any large concentration of night bombing raids, generally don't waste the day time guys with night duty or worry about the small quantity night raids which seem to be more harassment than damage oriented.

If my worthy IJ opponent reads this...I was always happy to see him put up day fighters at night to go after my small raids...figured he was taking far more casualties in operational losses than I was...

I wouldn't use any 1st rate day fighters.....Buffalo's, P-36's, Fulmars and P-400's work great. And Wirraways. The major reason I use night fighters at night, is they generally won't survive long in the day , and generally make lousy bombers. But if they are already there.....well , they gain experience , serve a function and free up other fighters till you can "trade 'em up" for something more useful. [:D]

I play the AI and it is possible to push the Japanese off the continent. I controlled Korea and the Japanese were sending nightly raids from the Home Islands to attack the bases in South Korea. I put all the NF I had there which at the time were only Beaufighters and P-70s. There were a couple of P-70 squadrons and one Beaufighter. The P-70s together got about 1 kill every two months, but they did get some damaged planes. The Beaufighters downed a few bombers a week and damaged many more. Day fighters flying at night never scored.

Yes, I was an OS1, 13 years, Pacific Fleet, with 10 years at sea on frigates and destroyers.

Recommended read, 'Big E', by Edward Stafford, the history of USS Enterprise. He covers the navy evolution of night carrier operations. Night fighter operations were very difficult given the limitations of early airborne radar. At best, disruption of the enemy attack, most often no real results....very rarely an actual kill. Night fighter squadrons struggled with low moral, both from poor results and the hazards of night flying. Sounds like the poor results commented on in the game model the historical.

Thanks to kbfchicago, I will look (again) at my squadron reinforcement schedule. Those P-70 ' s will probably end up in New Guinea.

There is a new book about the Enterprise published in 2012 or 2013 called Enterprise. It's a mix of personal accounts from surviving vets and history from other sources. I think it's a richer book than Big E was.
