larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:26:09 AM)

OK. I pulled the trigger and the combat phase has started. This is the results of my airstrike on his airfield. Results are not as good as I
had hoped. These air groups might be the hard case. I might want to try a different airfield first to get my proficiency a bit higher before
I try to tackle these guys.

EDIT: It just occured to me that I ought to do some "sweeps" of the enemy airfield before I send any bombers. That way the enemy
fighters will be fewer and I'll lose less bombers. Live and learn.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:33:08 AM)

Here's the results of a land combat close to the contested beach. I included some air power and it made the difference in this fight I'm
guessing. Few losses and gained the hex. Not too bad.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:38:42 AM)

Here's the results of the invasion attempt. The Allied squads hardly felt a thing even with all that air power and effort expended. I guess
I'll need some ships to add their bombardment in order to make invasions possible. Now we know.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:44:41 AM)

During the Allied part of turn 1 the Allies did multiple airstrikes on several of my airfields and clobbered a lot of my planes. I'm just going
to have to get even with them. This calls for Operation London, where I'll concentrate on his air force for a while to see if I can gain air
superiority. And THEN try some invasions or something. Here's my aircraft losses after just the Allied part of turn 1.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:48:53 AM)

I went to the aircraft listing by hitting 'A' and I got a list of the squadrons and almost didn't recognize it for a second because ALL the
squadrons are in reorg. That means they can't fly this turn and the Allied planes can. So I'm guessing that if I was playing a human
then I could expect more air strikes until my fleet was gone. I'm not sure what Elmer is going to do. Let's watch.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 12:55:27 AM)

OK. I'm tasking everybody ( almost ) to do Operation "Draino" to clear the road to Port Moresby over the mountains. To deal w/ the
roadblocks and strongpoints.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:06:10 AM)

The expected reinforcements this turn are these three DD's near Rabaul. I need to move them under air cover somewhere because the
Allies have SBD's and those things are deadly to Jap ships. Especially now that all my planes are in reorg. I think I should split them up
because of the all-your-eggs-in-one-basket rule. And I should try to park them under the umbrella of planes if possible. That situation
where you have a port and an airfield in one hex. I'll have to look around for that situation.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:11:17 AM)

Hey you guys.......it's come to my attention that there's my supply to speak of on the tip of the island where we're fighting. But all my
units have the 'G' for Guerilla on their display so I'm guessing that they are in supply anyway because of the rule about partisans and
paratroopers, etc. Cool.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:19:13 AM)

Here's the combat results of the first blow struck in Operation Draino. So far so good. I notice that the victors didn't advance after the
enemy vacated the hex. I guess I forgot to tell them to do that.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:26:48 AM)

Here's the results of an Allied airstrike on Gasmata. They were after the DD I'm betting. And they missed it.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:41:37 AM)

OK. It's T3 already and I've gotten my air fleet back. They can now fly and attack and I've assigned them missions to do that. I'm
sweeping w/ the Zeros and using the Oscars for back up AS. A lot of the planes are attacking ground targets.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 1:54:55 AM)

I was going to sail the 1st of the 3rd to Samaria SW and found my path blocked by an Allied DD and so I tried another path and found it
blocked too so I ended up sailing to where it is now. I've tasked the Vals and Kates to take out the DD's. I need that path to get to the
SW port.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:06:40 AM)

OK. So I started the combat resolution phase and here's the results of an airfield strike on Townsville, Aust.

EDIT: I've found out from this attack that there's no fighters there at T. So I can strike w/o an escort.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:12:19 AM)

According to the results of this airstrike I'm not sure that the Japs won this battle. It's looking like an expensive strike to me.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:16:27 AM)

Here's a result of a strike on an Allied DD. No joy.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/2E78DBCD0E6A496997971EEAFD98D7AD.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:20:00 AM)

Here's the result of the airstrike on the other DD. Joy at last.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/85B78DA5AB8F4638ABD7004DCEAE6775.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:26:07 AM)

OK. Now it's round two and I was sailing the 2nd of the 3rd to the SW port and discovered 2 more Allied DD's. So more air strikes are
on order.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/0340D99A99294690BB7E26E1F5CFB4E3.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:32:51 AM)

I had just enough Jap planes that would still fly to make another airstrike on an Allied DD. I made the mistake of shooting at it w/ my DD's
and lost one of them. D'oh.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/236C8793305D465AA66FB3CEF77A7962.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 2:53:22 AM)

OK. It's T4 and I'm doing air strikes on the Alllied DD's that survived last turn. Also, there's some airfield strikes on order for Horn Island
and Townsville. Most of the fighters I have are on their way to Horn Island since that's where there's a lot of Allied fighters. As soon as
I get rid of the fighters on Horn Island I'll tackle those on New Guinea. I think those have some P-38's if I recall correctly.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:09:34 AM)

Here's an airstrike on one of the Allied DD's. It bit the farm and bought the dust......something like that.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:13:15 AM)

Here's the airstrike on the other Allied DD. It's gone too.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:16:42 AM)

Here's the results of an airfield strike on Horn Island.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:22:17 AM)

Here's the result of the airfield strike on Townsville and I'm wondering where the escort was. There were P-38's at T. and they probably
tangled w/ my planes and that's why I lost so many. D'oh. I need to do sweeps on T. now too. I'll watch the type of combat that Elmer
does now to see if he includes any planes on any of his strikes to see if his planes are in reorg now or not.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:30:49 AM)

I drove a couple of my DD's to a station just outside Port Moresby and I thought I'd do a little airfield bombardment. Getting a couple of
the Allied planes is worth the loss of one of my DD's I think. I'd rather not lose any ships but I'm saying that if his mission is a success
in destroying or damaging some planes then it might be more worth it if the ship is lost.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:35:58 AM)

Here's the result of the DD's bombarding the airfield. Pretty cool. I think I can afford to lose that DD now.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 3:49:58 AM)

Since I got two of the ports of Samarai there has appeared a Seaplane Base and it has an aircraft carrier as part of it's equipment.
I can park some Zero's on that bad boy.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 4:15:08 AM)

The Allies did a strike on my TF and destroyed two of my three DD's. And to think I was going to bombard them too.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 4:22:53 AM)

Operation Draino has made some progress. There's only two Allied units to deal w/ now. And I've imported some more arty so it's
looking good.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 4:30:51 AM)

I'm going through the OOB moving units and I've come to a unit that appears to be able to move onto an Allied airfield but for some
game engine reason there's no way to do so. It feels like there's an exclusion zone around the hex. D'oh. And I went to a lot of trouble
to get that unit close enough to overrun the place.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/065FAD400E9247B98C7AE535E57A8DAB.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Papua New Guinea 42 revised (1/29/2014 4:56:31 AM)

OK. Operation Draino has past phase one, dispatching the Allied roadblock in the mountains, and is not embarking on phase two:
clearing the path to Port Moresby. And then phase three will be the actual take down of Port Moresby. They may need some help
doing that. I've got some combat troops I can ship in there but it's going to take a turn or two.
