Primarchx -> Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 7:52:40 PM)

I don't see any downside to having the Germans invade Switzerland and sweep past the Maginot Line from both the north and south. Seems like a pretty good option. Are there negative consequences to this (ie US Entry, etc)?

celebrindal -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 7:55:14 PM)

Not really worth it..

There is a US entry hit for it.

And since you are fighting in the mountains it's not all that easy.

To be honest unless you've had poor rolls, using one of your O-chits, there should be no reason for the french to live past Jul/Aug.

Orm -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 8:02:29 PM)

Here is a example on how to put up the defence against Axis aggression. Not all that easy to run over them.

Eskil -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 8:02:45 PM)

I believe you are seriously overestimating the ability of Wehrmacht to run panzers through the Alps. The Swiss will take a serious effort to dig out while the French will just be standing waiting for you on the other end since they will easily have redeployed once you are finally through the Alps.

Even Wehrmacht will be hard stretched at the stage of the game to pack a serious punch in a double pinch maneuver.

Klydon -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 8:51:30 PM)

Besides the US entry hit, trying to plow through a stack of Swiss worth 20 something on defense is a extremely tall order.

In addition, there are no long term benefits from invading the Swiss. (IE, no resources, no factories you can use, etc).

Primarchx -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/5/2014 9:54:18 PM)

Thanks, everyone!

Agreed. A waste of time, effort and resources, when you can blast the Third Republic into oblivion with only a half decent Fall Gelb.

Primarchx -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/6/2014 8:44:09 PM)

BTW, I see the forces presented above. Is this a consistent draw for the Swiss when invaded?

Minor countries always get the same units when they are attacked. The only differences depend on the year they are attacked. For example, Rumania has more units when it is attacked later in the war than in 1939. If you look at the force pools and future force pools for the countries, you can see what units they will receive. Reserve units come in the turn following the one in which they are attacked.

Sewerlobster -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/8/2014 12:54:56 PM)

And of course there is why pay for a war with Switzerland to open a route into France you really don't need only to open that same route to the Allies free of cost. Even the converse isn't usually worth it; the Allies gain nothing by trying this route when moving into Germany at the end game.

The 1st edition of WiF had coups...maybe just for poops and giggles one would waste his coup attempt against Switzerland; but that would be an utter throw away.

Mike Parker -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/8/2014 1:02:08 PM)

I have to say the Germans with Italian aid SHOULD invade Switzerland. There is a very unknow and rarely used advantage to invading Switzerland... Cheese, delicious cheese with a plethora of holes for all your field rations. Once you begin the invasion of Russia the Wehrmacht will thank you much for the hearty additions to their supply trains, and the italians will be delighted at adding Swiss to their Proscutto sandwiches.

Well - you are offending the Belgiums and Dutch a bit (and maybe the French as well). Our chocolate is at least as good as the Swiss'!
Amsterdam is actually still the largest Cacao handling port in the world. Lot's of Cacao mills around that harbour.

Orm -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/8/2014 1:59:53 PM)

I have fond memories of Brugge and Belgium chocolate. [:)]

I seem to recall Belgian beer as well but that memory, somehow, seems to be hidden by fog. [;)]

bo -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/9/2014 4:20:23 PM)

I disagree with all of you about invading Switzerland by Germany, I think it is a must WHY?

BECAUSE THEY ARE THERE [:D]

That is funny in the sense I had an argument this weekend with a friend about the faux pas with mistakenly calling a Belgian a Frenchman. I went to grade school with a Belgian fellow and he quite emphatically corrected me on his nationality!

if you break USSR and UK .. then it is a good use of all you idle forces.

no need for them to forget their combat experience

michaelbaldur -> RE: Invading Switzerland (2/10/2014 3:06:07 PM)

if you break Switzerland .. you can have a mountain fortress from the Mediterranean to the German border.

I would like to see the allies break that

It's the same for the Allies as it is for the Axis. It's not worth the investment of troops and aircraft, even in the later days of the war. The Swiss have a good army and a good airforce available in doubled terrain for the defender. You need both cities to conquer the country and that is really difficult to do.
