Despite the fact that mother Russia is now the butt of now many jokes.. Who's going to win more gold? What's your favorite event? For me it's curling!

Max 86 -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/6/2014 3:31:31 PM)

Hopefully the attention can be directed to the athletes and the competitions instead of all the lousy setup by the host nation. Downhill skiing events are my favorites. Some speed skating too.

rodney727 -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/6/2014 8:21:08 PM)

Well the host nation will get what it Putin to it! I do feel sorry for the athletes that have to endure 3rd world conditions just to represent their country.

Missouri_Rebel -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/6/2014 11:26:00 PM)

I'd be happy if they would start showing the events more in their entirety instead of constantly breaking away for the multitude of heartfelt stories they present. Everyone has a story. I want to see the events.

CGGrognard -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/6/2014 11:40:04 PM)

Looking forward to the snowboarding events myself!

Curtis Lemay -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/7/2014 12:08:44 AM)

Figure skating yes my wife loves that so I must watch. Hey UK do you send anyone to the Olympics ? As I'm watching this I'm glad that Russia will never be allowed again to host. Canada looks strong this year.

warspite1 -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/7/2014 12:00:28 PM)

Yes we always send a small team to the Winter Olympics. We are targeting between 3 - 7 medals. 4 medals is our record for one WinterGames (Chamonix, France 1924).

4x10km cross country for men.
4x5km cross country for women.
Curling.

(That should be 3 golds for "us" hehe)

I am constantly surprised that UK remain so weak at the Winter Olympics.

I have begin to wonder if it is a conscious effort to avoid getting good at any event that participate in the winter games. [;)]

Why so? Apart from a bit of Scotland we are not exactly inundated with snow.

Many sports included that do not require snow.

I've noticed that many countries that traditionally have not have had much participation in the Winter Olympics have increased their participation in recent events. UK is a nation with many great athletes and UK usually do very well during the summer games so I've expected more from them.

Could it be that in UK tradition is so important that few try new (winter) sports and, if so, could that be the reason that UK is not stronger during the winter games?

Yes and those not involving snow have given us our best results (as far as I know - although I am no expert) e.g. 3 Ice Skating Golds when I was growing up (Curry 76, Cousins 80 and Torvill and Dean 84(?)).

The advent of the lottery (and the funding it provides) has seen an upturn in fortunes at the Summer games and it is hoped this will happen at Sochi - hence the 3-7 target.

Curling will be up in the air. It truly is a game of strategy.

Well there is a good medal hope gone [:(] Two snowboarders in the slopestyle final, but our main man Billy Morgan crashed on both runs.... Jamie Nicholls finished 6th. Oh well, well done for making the final lads [:)]

One gold, one silver and one bronze for Norway today, not too bad.

Oh, and congrats on the medal haul - what are Norway targeting?

terje439 -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/8/2014 10:46:10 AM)

Atleast 5 gold medals, should have a possibility for about twice that, but
alot of sickness and injuries lately means we set the target low this time.
And go to the web and look for the pants ;)
(Would have given a link, but both pc's dead, and still trying to learn
to use this iphone-thingy).

terje439 -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/8/2014 2:39:50 PM)

Oh my!
Ole Einar Bjørndalen seems to win the mens biathlon today as well. :D
That ties him with Bjørn Dæhlie as the winter olympian with the most
medals in the winter olympics ever!

For years I always thought that Figure Skating was called that due to the shape of the female skaters. I was sure Dorothy Hamill was going to win because she obviously had the best one (and she won!). Only much later did I learn that it referred to the figures they drew on the ice with their skates. Go figure! It's still a nice bit of soft porn for broadcast TV though - and they don't even draw those figures anymore.

Mmmm. Let the soft porn begin. Kaetlyn Osmond:

The weather here has been grey here for over a month now. No sun at all. [:(]

Neilster -> RE: Let's talk Olympics ! (2/10/2014 12:36:24 AM)

I actually prefer the Winter to the Summer games. Everybody is seduced by marquee events like the 100m but in reality the Summer games has loads of tedious sports like pistol shooting, synchronised swimming, dressage etc. The Winter Olympics has lots of cool gravity powered events, many of them with the potential for spectacular crashes [:'(]

Australia picked up 2 gold and a silver last time. Not sure about this time. We might need everybody to fall over in the speed-skating again, which gave Steven Bradbury the gold medal [:D]

It happened in his semi too, which he was only in because some Canadian dude got disqualified in the quarter final. It's entered the Australian vernacular. Any time somebody wins from nowhere its "doing a Bradbury". He loves the expression and says he hopes it's still being used when he's dead.

As for Sochi...bad luck. If your system is corrupt and there's almost no rule of law, that's what you get. The joint's unfinished, only a few hundred metres from the stadium it looks like Stalingrad circa February 1943, the accommodation for the journalists is either appalling or non-existent and Putin's mates have made off with 30 billion dollars. It's symptomatic of this "new Russia". A flashy façade concealing a shambles.

I thought the opening ceremony was generally very good but there were some glaring omissions from Russian history. Mind you they weren't terribly flattering so that's hardly surprising. I did think they could have had the traditional symbol of Russia though...a cantankerous steamroller, breaking down halfway across the stage [:'(]

Cheers, Neilster
