Skarfdawg -> Germany and USSR never go to war (2/7/2014 1:29:14 PM)

I was a big fan of Days of Decision III.
That game introduced the concept of three political powers: Fascists, Democrats and Communists.
With that in mind, I am currently playing a Global War game where the Nazi-Soviet Pact will never be broken by either side. The USSR player instead will use his game time to conquer Persia, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Finland and Norway without any interference from the Axis.
This could result in having the most victory cities at the conclusion of the game?

Remember, WiF is about trying new things.

Any comments?

I could see this perhaps in a turnament where it's based on who has the most victory points.. otherwise most players would never go for it as they don't want the UK going splat cuz eventually germany would start eyeing up those juicy russian resources. ;-)

Does any Russian player truly trust a German player 100% to never invade the USSR?

Will any German player allow the USSR to gobble up the rest of the world, when there can be only 1 winner?

Both answers are: "No". However, there isn't much which the Axis can do if the USSR wants to conquer Persia and Iraq in the early game. Both countries have very weak forces and are probably going to be overrun within two impulses a country, even if the USSR is neutral...

I would like to play Japan against that assumption.

oh there is something the Axis can do, very effectively too. just not the European portion of the Axis.

he just said the Nazi<>Soviet Pact wouldn't be broken, leaving a free hand in the Far East… ?

unless the pact won't be broken but a huge army has to sit in Poland to make that not happen.

Sorry, my reply was meant for Post #4, not Post #1.

I'm assuming he's referring to a solitaire game, where he can ensure the pact will never be broken.

I am not sure about the Axis not being able to do anything to slow down a USSR conquest of Persia-Iraq.

It seems to me if the Japanese make it their early goal to put all sorts of pressure on the Chi-Coms, a lot of the Russian moves are going to be taken up either having the Chi-Coms retreat or face watching them get wiped off the map. In my current game, the Japanese launched a heavy offensive against the Chi-Coms and while the Russians were able to demand territory from the Rumanians, they never could get enough moves to deploy enough units to get enough in position to threaten Finland. The Chi-coms were on the run from the start of the game, but managed to survive (barely) and dig in around their last city before the Japanese called off that part of their campaign. (The Japanese got to the point the Nationalists were threatening the flank from SE of Sian and the fact they could not get more than 3 stacks of troops on 1 stack of Chi-Coms in the mountains due to Chi-Com positioning).

True. However, as soon as there are no moves to be done with the Communists, the USSR can use that impulse to crush such a country, provided they are in position...
