Just a short question arose by curiosity:

when you hit a TK transporting fuel, and you read for example the text "fuel burning", does it mean that the quantity of fuel in it decrease or not?

It most likely means it will burn up and sink. If that does not happen, and it miraculously survives, (which I don't think has ever happened to one of mine, by the way [:)]), then the fuel will certainly be reduced. Supply, troops and any other cargo can be destroyed by any hit on a ship, and especially if it catches fire.

Obvert has it right in my experience.

The moment you get a critical hit on any TK/AK or merchant (or for that matter most combat vessels) to include "fuel burning" or "massive explosive damage" you can safely assume the outlook for that vessel is very grim indeed.

No damage results are 100%, and there are plenty of anecdotal stories of ships limping back to port against all odds. However the case you cite should leave you knowing that there is major damage and fires - cargo is lost and the ship is in grave peril.

If it is IJN, it sinks. I've never had one of mine survive that message, only one has ever even survived past the turn the message came in. If it is allied there is some small chance it will survive ...

Even Allied tankers don't survive often......

...and, yes, as noted above there is an immediate and dramatic decrease in the fuel cargo on board. As far as I can tell that continues while the ship continues burning.

BTW, ships carrying cargo or troops also lose some when they are hit. I'm sure that all of that is partly based on how big is the hit, and as already noted, any critical-type results.

In fact, in my experience once a tanker or AO starts to burn (from its cargo), I've never seen one survive. Hits yes, but burning, no....

Also why you want to make sure you have "do not load fuel" when using some Allied xAK's for amphib operations (the ones that have liquid cargo capacity). Unloading across the beaches when CD fire can cause your ships to light up does not work well.

That's a real good thing to know. Good reason to keep the big xAKs hauling plastic dog doo across the Pacific.
