davidmiller -> age of the SPW@W' er (3/9/2001 10:44:00 PM)

This is my first insertion in this forum, even tho I've been reading it for some time and enjoying and learning from all msgs. In the past I've contacted Wild Bill on Email with my problems, which he rectified promply. I cannot drink enough toasts or tip my hat enough to thank Wild Bill for his help. (How did he find the time). The age average is about to be nudged up a bit. I am 61 years old and still run in the woods. I use to be an old SPI fan and was a lover of the large battles they put out. I am still throwing papers showing my logistis away from Campaign in North Africa. That is when I really needed a computer. I started out with a game called Tratics (or Tactics). It was a few years back. First computer wargame was EastFront. Steel Panthers came out and I was hooked on that type system. Enjoyed EastFront but grew tired of system. As info, that first Eastfront game was the one by Gary Grigsby and was played on an old Atari off an old floppy. Thanks to Matrix and their staff for all the enjoyment that they have given me . Matrix has my support. My compliments to all of you wargamers out there. You folks are the most unselfish and frendliest fanatics I've ever had the honor to associate with. Dont tell my wife.

I don't know what the average age of your typical SPWAW'er might be, but I've noticed that the maturity level of forum posters is much higher than other forums I frequent. I'm 40, by the way. p.s. Thank you, David(and Wild Bill), for making me feel soooo much younger.

You're not the only one who was an SPI fan, have you noticed Jim Dunnigan is a commander in the US OOB.

Tactics and Tactics II were board wargames, Tractics was a set of miniatures rules put out by TSR (yes the Dungeons and Dragons people). Tractics had hit probabilities for shells hitting viewing ports on tanks. ------------------ MikeR ------------------------- General MacArthur: "If you were an American I'd have you shot" Field Marshal Blamey: "General, if I was an American I'd shoot myself" Scene from the film, The Last Bastion

Glad you feel that way. You see? There is a redeeming value in aging here. I'm rather enjoying it myself. As one old poop to another; welcome! (I'm 52, and cut my teeth on Tactics II AH co. (c)1961) ------------------ Greg. 37 mill AA... can suddenly ruin your day.

Jackk -> (3/10/2001 10:00:00 AM)

Well. There's just a ton of, ahem, wisdom here, aint there? :-) I'm 31 and married. Never played any real board wargames (do Risk and Stratego count? ), but started on my PC addiction with SP1. Then SP2. TOAW, AOR, WF, and now SPWAW. Oh, I forgot. I actually started with Panzer General on the 3DO system ~1994. ------------------ Jackk "Smile today cuz tomorrow may really suck" [This message has been edited by Jackk (edited March 09, 2001).]

Randy Stead -> (3/12/2001 6:32:00 AM)

I'm 39, married nearly 18 years now to a very understanding woman. Calls herself Computer Widow. I scared her one night while I was upstairs playing Pacific War. Let out a blood-curdling scream. She comes flying upstairs thinking I may have hurt myself by falling and breaking a limb, shouting "whats wrong?" Arrrrrrgh, I reply, "The Japs just sank one of my carriers!!!!!!" :D She's used to it now, but still doesn't understand how I can "get so excited over a game." Started at 13 years old with AH boardgame Panzerblitz, then Third Reich, Luftwaffe, etc. First computer wargame was Gary Grigsby's Second Front. But baby, my life didn't begin until I found Steel Panthers!! ;)

Krec -> (3/12/2001 7:02:00 AM)

im 39........Risk started it for me as far as first wargame on comp it was empire deluxe.......then PG......wow i thought i was in pig heaven. Years later look at what we have ........moving tanks around with gun sounds and not knowing what the other side has ...its great.......aways looking for the next ver.

Antonius -> (3/12/2001 7:30:00 AM)

I'm 39. But my two sons aged 10 and 7 also play, which ought to pull the average age down a bit :) Started with making rules to play with my Airfix napoleonic and WWII soldiers when I was a kid... As a business school student I played SL all night in my girl-friend's room and threw the dices as quietly as possible so she could sleep :D Now we're married and I use a head-set for the very same reason :D :D

Wow has to be one of the only message boards on which I feel like a youngster :cool: I'm 37, been wargaming since I was 11, first Computer wargame was M1 Tank Platoon on the Amiga (I think). SPWaW is the closest I have come to the enjoyment of face to face wargaming in years.

Toey -> (3/12/2001 3:18:00 PM)

31. 2 kids. I play Counter Strike on line and SP:W@W when I'm not. I get new games on a regular basis, but always end up playing SP:W@W again and again and again..... :D

frank1970 -> (3/12/2001 3:49:00 PM)

Zorfwaddle -> (3/22/2001 7:48:00 AM)

36, first wargame was Arab-Israeli Wars, in '76 or so. Played various games off and on, including War of the Ring and Pacific War, then descended into RPG's. First computer was in 92, first game was Civ, but the 2nd and 3rd were Harpoon and Pacific War... Due to PacWar being a favorite, Steel Panthers (GG) was definetly a pickup! To this day when I go TAD, Pacwar, Harpoon, and now SPWAW go with me....

BryanMelvin -> (3/22/2001 10:49:00 AM)

Marauder Mel Here: I am 42 soon to reach 43 next month. Heck, I started playing wargames with toy soldiers on the checkerd tile of my old family home when I was a spire 7 years old! Then bought my 1st AH game - Waterloo at age 9. SPI games and AH games filled my room. I taught all the kids I knew several of these games. Played Chess and was a local tourney winner too. As I got older, AH Panzer Blitz caught my eye and then came SL, COI, and ASL!! The years rolled by. Soon - I could not find the time to play the board games nor opponents. Then Computer games caught my attention and SP arrived. Meet up with a guy named Figmo at TGN and asked some design SP questions - introduced to Wild Bill - then became a Raider. My how time flies.. It is been one great pleasure and honor to work with both Figmo and Wild Bill these past few years. You guys are the best :) :) :D ;)

Wild Bill -> (3/22/2001 3:24:00 PM)

Now old Marauder (Bryan Melvin) was part of a trio that came in to help out via Figmo. As it turns out two of these three are team leaders with the Raiders. Both Bryan and Louie Marsh are two of the best. And we can thank the old talent hunter, Jim "Figmo" Faletti for sending 'em my way. It's nice to know in the gaming community such lasting relations can be cultivated. I hope to be in contact with all of you in the years to come too...Wild Bill ==================

TO DAVID MILLER : Welcome aboard Mr. David Miller !!! You will find here plenty of new friends who love strategy and WWII like you ! They take care of your problems even if you are wrong or silly...I like this very much ! And also Matrix is the first place in which WE are so important.. compliments to them will never be enough ! I am 30 years old....I owe my initiation at the old SP1 to my uncle Franco who shares at about the same age than you..He was always commanding its U-boot into the deeps hunting for enemy convoys... It was a G-reat N-aval B-attle that kept him to sleepless nights playing his duty ! I was fashinated by him and decided to become a seaman..but into his G-N-B CD I found the demo of SP1 and it was love at first sight !! As I said somewhere here I never betrayed it since that day !.... That day I preferred to have my foot deep in the ground..no more doubts about it ! And here I am... SPWAW is the best I could hope for the future of SP1 ! If you liked it now you can share with me the same enthusiasm for SPWAW! However If you like , if you have time , ecc,ecc I will be glad to go back in history and have a battle with you in the old SP1 !!! Tell me if you are interested at ruxiusf@libero.it Bye and Good luck (especially if you will play against me ehehehe..) !

Slayer -> (3/23/2001 8:30:00 AM)

I'm 18 now, but I've been playing wargames on computers before I was 10. Back then, the wargames I played didn't have things like "sound" or "graphics". The first computer wargame I played was 5th Eskadra by Simulations Canada on my Commodore 64. Nothing but text. Unless, of course, you count the laminated maps provided with the game to keep track of your ships! I first played SP1 three or four years ago, and was thrilled when I heard about SPWAW.

chanman -> (3/23/2001 8:48:00 AM)

Every now and then, I see something that makes me start to feel old. Slayer's comment about the crudeness of the 5th eskadra game brought back memories of playing trek on the university computer. Terminals were teletypes connected via a 300 baud modem to a CDC mainframe. After each move, you had to wait for a new "screen" to print on the teletype. Hoping against hope that the vibration didn't wiggle the handset out of the modem cradle. Gave us incentive to be really efficient with our coding since we would use leftover "time" from our Fortran programming classes to play. I am extremely thankful that the card readers had been replaced the year before I got there. Thanks for all the work, Matrix. This beats the hell out of having to quickly calculate the sign/cosign of your firing angle so you can nail that pesky klingon. I think I nailed more than one star by accident. :cool:
