Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (7/24/2016 5:57:01 PM)

Nov 7, 1944

One week done in November, baby!

67 Units at Chungking this glorious afternoon....China Lives. 100 Ftrs and Bombers stationed there as well.

No invasion of Honshu...

10,000 supplies headed for China...well, more but we shall see what gets thru.

CD guns bite back just a little...I think the Allies are saving up their bombers for maximum effort with an invasion of Honshu as it is quiet today in the air. I am moving all AA to likely invasion spots...very minimal left in big cities for now.

Nov 7, 1944

A ground success as the the crack 39th Division and even more experienced 116th Division, both spoiling for a fight with excellent morale, repulse the Commonwealth and British troops which lacked heavy tank support.

Japan can still fight!

[image]local://upfiles/44178/5372013E3A5D485A9B91460D43214BAB.jpg[/image]

The Allies attacked with the 11th East African, 18th Division and the 26th Indian Divisions supported only by an artillery regiment. The Tanks have mostly gone north to take Chungking and also are moving on Changsha...Allies have sundered their doom stack and Japan has a chance to hold at either Changsha, Kukong, and Canton.

Great news here!

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (7/25/2016 2:47:32 PM)

You can see the change in fonts on the battle report from the last two posts...I installed lucida sans unicode and used the altFont switch.

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (7/25/2016 2:53:21 PM)

VP ratio falls to 2.448 to 1.

I released some supply on the HI, boosting my vp from bases. Perhaps also a loss at Chungking for the Allies as all the new Chinese troops eat the supply up.

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (7/27/2016 1:43:42 PM)

Nov 8, 1944

Fairly quiet. Allies bomb my crack troops west of Canton heavily, but there is enough other units there to protect them.

Chinese troops seem to be moving against my dug in troops west of Chungking with not much of a focus towards Sian yet.

Lost a sub laying mines at Wushi on the river above Shanghai. Lots of mines and DP guns but never can I ht the wandering Allied destroyers. Allies spot all my cargo ships in a level 1 port on the river. Time to move them again.

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (7/28/2016 2:53:48 PM)

Turn is a away, and my major move today is the 300 merchant ships on the river in China. I have a few AV's there and they will get the last of my Rex's, and I will just park the convoy in an empty river hex.

I would have been much better off sending all this shipping to the SRA and hiding it in small ports, etc.

Hindsight.

I have picked up a dozen or more great strategic points following this AAR.
Add another one to the notebook.
Thanks again.

Nov 10, 1944

Allied heavy bombers quiet over Honshu...uhoh! Something is coming I think...

Over in China Allies make a shock attack but run into a crackerjack division untouched by bombing...relatively untouched.

Mike McCreery -> RE: Disaster! (7/30/2016 3:06:34 AM)

Chinese troops are relatively worthless even late in the game due to lack of TOE. There is no HQ with them. They couldnt prep for the hex obviously but to get an adjusted AV of 0 is pretty unlucky even so!!

For a while even Chinese troops were running roughshod over me. Lousy bombers. So it feels good to deliver a setback,no matter how temporary.

Turn is away & on to the other turn.

Don't think that was luck. The attack only showed 6,000 attackers. Only a single unit out of that stack attacked.

You are quite correct, shock attack across the river to control the hexside.

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/1/2016 1:35:16 PM)

Nov 11, 1944

Here comes the final attack...

disruption fairly high among the troops thanks to non-stop bombing and bombardment. Allied troops fresh.

Forts 3 I think...

internet service disruptions over the weekend slowed the number of turns...but I suspect once these two positions are beaten, Japan will fall fast.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/088F61BFF5B8484F9E549E6DEB92F1B0.jpg[/image]

That is 40 and 16 Allied units respectively.

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/1/2016 3:21:05 PM)

Turn is away...this game might be measured in two weeks depending upon how well I can fight...which is doubtful, considering the Allies have rested their planes and troops while decimating my land forces with bombardments. The answer will be to what degree does the Allies focus and concentrate on a single point with everything they have.

Well, the first attack may come this day on Honshu....

Let's see: 300 ships trapped on the river in China, perhaps he will be able to really take Osaka and Kobe and that with supply to Chungking will be enough?

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/1/2016 4:48:03 PM)

Latest VP ratio is now 2.451 to 1.

Allies lost over 70 planes to flak and operations yesterday according to tracker as for the first time in several days he lets lose on the ground troops from the air even using CV's to add strikes.

Anticipating such a move, there is a lot of AA in those two northern hexes with more on the way. Plus all my armor -- what is left of it.

Game to date I have built 405 Type 3 Medium Tanks...I am short 115 currently, but not all units have upgraded to them because of lack of supply and pools.

The Type 2 light tank, another very good design, is short 31 and I have only 9 active in one unit, the 1st Ind. Tank Rgt. Unfortunately most tank units don't upgrade to this tank and I am stuck with Type 95 and even worse the Type 97 Tankette.

I have set all afv and vehicles to stockpile except the Type 3 Tank and Type 2 light Tank. However a lot of vehicle production points get eaten up when new units arrive that have motorized support or other vehicles in the TOE.

Tanks are incredibly important late game, as they will almost never be targeted by naval bombardments (unless there are very few units in the hex). This makes them wonderful for atoll defense early game, although they can be bypassed which would not be ideal.

Last update for today, and now onto my other game...

ny59giants -> RE: Disaster! (8/1/2016 5:48:17 PM)

What did you set your "Vehicle" production to and what do you think you should have set it for? I'm back playing Japan vs Gen Patton in RHS and I just went from 225 to 250 in Vehicles.

When I took over the game the factories were still at the initial level...what is that 80 something. So I missed tons of production.

I grew it to 180 initially, and then I think I bumped it to 200 but way to late. We have had such a meat grinder of a game...200 should have been the initial build based on a scen 1 supply game.

I think.

Nov 12, 1944

Holy smokes! Massive bombardment and aerial bombing at Maizuru!

Followed up by a massive deliberate attack....40 Allied units.

Shermans and Stuarts and Marines, oh my!

Is this the end?[X(]

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/2/2016 4:15:11 AM)

Not to be outdone, there is another deliberate attack...this time with tons of tanks to the northeast in the rough terrain.

This is the end, my friend....

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/2/2016 4:22:59 AM)

Supply is loosed from Osaka and was meant to flow to Maizuru, but a tactical oversight and it flows to Kobe whose bureaucrats still had high demand.

Oh, those crafty rear echelon guys at Kobe...perhaps the Allies will take a day breather?

15 Battleships bombarded Maizuru, not to mention the cruisers and destroyers and destroyer escorts. Anything with a gun shelling the troops at point blank range...

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/2/2016 4:34:40 AM)

What a blood bath! I wonder, can Japan scrape more troops out of bottom of the barrel?

You bet they can, have to hold here despite the shelling, the horrendous fighting must continue! The Allies will see they cannot win this war![:D]

Now that's interesting because it is exactly what is happening to me now as well.

I'm getting hit by at least 8 BBs on this hex. Of course Mike doesn't need it any more as he has now flank me with the Russians.

You are doing well when you can decide where to send supply! Supply, what is supply [:(]

Lowpe -> RE: Disaster! (8/5/2016 1:58:09 PM)

Turn is away, and every tank that can roll and still fight is headed to Maizuru.

Over 2000 more AV headed there...but this is it. Nothing will be left pretty much...but I have to make a stand!

ny59giants -> RE: Disaster! (8/5/2016 3:18:35 PM)

It's only Jan '42 as Japan, but every base in the Home Islands is building forts to at least level 3 to start with while Tokyo just went to 4. Its never too early to start. [;)]

I was in windows 10 and composing a reply when I had a driver state failure that took me to the blue screen, that now sports a unsmiley.

Anyhow, the crux was pick some places that could make for really great supply stockpile bases on the HI. Yokohama comes to mind, since it will get 100+ 12cm guns, good terrain, and not likely to be bombarded by sea.

With high forts, good AA, and no naval bombardment you can really protect your supply on Honshu.

Build all clear beaches to level 5 or 6 even.

You can move and fly troops around for lower pp costs by keeping them under the General HQ umbrella. Garrisoning Hokkaido can be done that way, as well as garrisoning the islands nearby...just switch the island to General prior to building it up and then you can fly in troops.

I also think the best place for mines is Fusan to HI...mine the heck out of it and stack it with ACMs. The cd guns and a hideous amount of mines will bar movement across there plus allow you to run convoys with no escorts.

Ominato to Hokkaido is another good chokepoint to mine very heavily.

Don't bother mining the river in China...mines don't seem to work there.

Build all runways to at least 2 on HI...but 4 would be better.

Some places on Honshu aren't worth building forts at., but not many.

ny59giants -> RE: Disaster! (8/5/2016 4:21:30 PM)

I'm mostly clear of the cob webs of playing Japan again after years away. The big difference playing RHS is the OOB is so much different than any DBB mod based PBEM games I'm playing or has played over the last few years. I can easily say that China is now a BIG challenge as Japan. No marching into Chungking in this mod. [:-]

That sounds really appealing to me.

If China exists, then perhaps the Allies won't build up to such ridiculous levels in Burma since Japan's Army is still in China?

What do you think?

ny59giants -> RE: Disaster! (8/5/2016 5:11:12 PM)

RHS has very high PP at 1000/day. Thus, everybody's ground troops are in play without any SL. Gen Patton has already launched a few powerful counterattacks in China in less than a month. Thankfully, I got some of that nasty Japanese artillery from Manchuria bought out and railed into China. [:D] Sid voiced how low a percentage of troops are used in non-RHS games versus what was used in reality.

I would suggest that once your game here is over to 'copy and paste' an AE folder that has extended map stuff to a new folder. Go into RHS and download the newest version. The installer does all the work for you. [:)] It is a different animal from stock and DBB based mods
