O.Schmidt -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/29/2014 6:58:52 PM)

I need a register version of Hexdraw? (not the Test Version 1.1)

Thanks!
O.Schmidt

Is that answer just for Bader's consumption or is the trial version sufficient?

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/30/2014 2:30:44 AM)

I don't remember myself. I've had a registered copy for a while now. There are limitations on the test version. Check it out and let us know.

O.Schmidt -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/30/2014 7:00:56 AM)

I have the Test Version (Free Download) and (not registered)

"I can not open the Lvl2 Basic Map.hm!"

WildCatNL -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/30/2014 11:42:19 AM)

AFAIK, the Lvl2 Basic Map template is too large to be loaded with the Hexdraw test version. It loads fine with the registered version of Hexdraw.

O.Schmidt -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/31/2014 5:35:14 PM)

I thinks Hexdraw is too expensive!
Thanks

zakblood -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (3/31/2014 7:01:48 PM)

try Hexographer also, yes it's not cheap either but gives you the options of importing real maps and making them into hex maps

JoBader -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/11/2014 6:04:37 PM)

to be not in his way I gave O.Schmidt a Hexdraw

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/11/2014 6:19:01 PM)

Jo. Thanks. I have been using your program for a number of years on a number of projects. Great tool. Any plans for a new version?

JoBader -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/11/2014 8:25:57 PM)

thanks for the kudos Jim.
yes I should do a new version. But just now I am on a AI for a hex and counter game.

Will you be giving hexdraw to other users of Flashpoint Campaigns? I also think that $45 for hexdraw plus the cost of Flashpoint campaigns is too steep. I also want to create and edit maps, but not for $95.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/12/2014 5:51:22 PM)

keystone, Per the Map modding guide you can make maps in any software you like. It is up to Jo on if he wants to give out copies. It is a good product if you are doing any other type of game work requiring hex maps and worth the money. Hopefully Jo will work on an update some time down the road to allow for overlay art to be replaced on a map reload like the elevation layer does and make modifying existing maps easier. A new version would be great too. Bottom line, support the indy programmers by buying their stuff. [:)]

KEYSTONE07950 -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/12/2014 6:16:02 PM)

Capn Darwin,

Thank you for your thoughts. I too wish to support our hobby by supporting indy programmers. If Flashpoint was a one and done type of game, I wouldn't think twice about paying an additional $45. I'm sure you will want to be paid for any new Flashpoint games you make. I will want to support YOU by buying your games. I would think twice in buying into a series of games that I also have to buy a third party program to edit my maps.

JoBader -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (4/13/2014 11:18:59 PM)

hm yes, that is a problem to buy an indy programm and an additional indy software.
I think about how I could help. how about a version of Flashpoint with hexdraw included for a few bugs more.
I really don't know if this is worth the effort or not.
As Captain Darwin said it is good to support the indy programmers. Yes their products are a bit pricey.
But when you visit a shoemaker shoes will also be pricey. It is all about the amount of sales which are usually low.
Low because it is special. Even more I appreciate the Steam Green-Light thing very much. And I was glad to see
Unity of Command appearing in this mass market. Even more they did a very precedent-setting design especially on stacking, supply and step-losses.
I think without the indy work on essentials we would still have very boring games like they used to be.
Again when one is buying pricey low selling indy things he invests in better games he will play in the future.
Perhaps it is like paying a ticket into the laboratory.

A easy way of crop en resize to FlashPoint size is ImageMagick.

convert" "map.png" -crop 5689x4324+152+71 +repage "map.png"
convert" "map.png" -resize 2569x1952 +repage "map.png"

Tazak -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/21/2014 3:14:59 PM)

New question: using the RS map art how do you enlarge urban tiles to cover an entire hex

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/21/2014 3:28:27 PM)

When we use hex draw, we just "drop" a bunch in the hex. Are you looking to make a dumbie map to generate the fp9 file?

Tazak -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/21/2014 4:34:12 PM)

Trying again to create a new map, just not happy with how the urban areas end up looking. I'm dropping either too many which looks really messy or too few which looks kind of bare

You can just make an "ugly" one, with one urban/forest/field "art item" per hex and let me render them for you. Just be careful to not spill art items across the border. The Map Values editor picks them up easily.

W1lli4m, thanks you did outstanding work for my campaign maps, I'll take you up on your offer and will be in touch soon

harry_vdk -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/27/2014 7:09:56 PM)

Is there a description of the fileformat of fprs. [.fp9/.scn/.cam]

How to read/write.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/27/2014 7:27:09 PM)

No. William has reversed out the FP9 files to do his map conversions and he could explain that I'm sure. Not sure the need of scenario or campaign files since you can edit them in the in-game editors. What are you trying to do with those files?

harry_vdk -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/28/2014 7:10:04 AM)

I am looking for a way of batch processing capability of .fp9 files.

For actions like resize, crop, merge.

And maybe a random map generation to.

But writing must 100 correct. and asking is faster then reversed engineering.

And respecting the ownership is factor to.

CapnDarwin -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (8/28/2014 11:11:36 AM)

Harry, I'll chat with Rob and see what he thinks and get back with you.

zakblood -> RE: Map Art and Hexdraws Templates now LIVE!!! (11/8/2014 4:17:27 PM)

i'm after doing a remake of the battle of Arnhen so think this engine would be a good place as any to start, so let the modding begin...

Hi,

Your have been asking why do I need those file descriptions for.

For my new maps i have 7 HexDraw definitions with 1/3 overlap. And one big stitched map (322x64 hex) generated from the 7 HexDraw files.

If I can reduce the editing by copy data (a part of a complete) .fp9 file to a other file, I can use the big one as a source for the other files.

And maybe generate for the big one just a partial map.

No, we haven't put out an update of the Map Art / HexDraw templates. That's for two reasons:

First, the HexDraw templates represent the colors expected by the Map Values editor to understand terrain. That color mapping hasn't changed

Second, from 2.06 (Player's Edition) onwards, when I started creating the map graphics, the map art is no longer template based. Instead maps are rendered by software, with trees, houses, bridges placed individually on the map, depending on where water, roads and hill sides are. The benefit of that approach is quicker map creation, and the ability to offer multiple different looks for the same map - see this thread for an example.

For the next game, Southern Storm, we are considering what level of support to include in order to enable you and others to create maps easily, with a similar look to the game's default graphics. We will continue the current set-up where any bitmap can be turned into a game map through manual setting of values in the Map Value editor.

Please note that several talented folks in our community have created great maps without HexDraw, including Harryvdk's Dutch 'From Rotterdam to Arnhem' maps, Plodder's West Berlin map, and Stimpak recent Faßberg map.

William
