stransky43 -> 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/21/2014 2:28:04 AM)

This is a first for me after playing EF, WF, RS for over 15 years - a crash!

Upon reaching the final turn of a Campaign scenario, the "You are progressing nicely...." screen appears and then an "ef.exe has stopped working" Windows dialog box appears.

When you re-enter that Campaign, you are back to the final turn again, which when you end it, the same crash sequence occurs. You cannot progress any further in that Campaign.

I've played literally hundreds of hours in ver. 1.04 with no problems at all. This only started today after my upgrade to 2.0 last night.

berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/21/2014 5:25:10 AM)

Is this the continuation of a campaign begun with 1.04? If so, maybe best to finish under 1.04.

Please look in your top-level East Front folder. Is there an OLDER & OLDEST Backup Saves version of the campaign save file? If so, in Windows Explorer, try the OLDER version first, renaming it, removing the "OLDER", then resume the campaign.

You also have some .log files. What do your engine.log & campaign.log file say (near the end)? Maybe zip them up and post here at the forum.

If the above doesn't help, consider also zipping and posting here all of your campaign Backup Saves files.

Salemi88 -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/21/2014 10:55:37 PM)

I've got the same crash in a fresh new campaign and tried the OLDER Backup save procedure, unsuccessfully though...

Oh my... I've been waiting for this patch for several years precisely because of this problem and, voilá, I'm dealing with it all over again...

berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/21/2014 11:12:49 PM)

The campaign game code was not closely looked at or modified much. So if bugs lurked in there before, they likely lurk there still.

Please post here, in one ZIP file, your

  • save files (all three, including OLDER & OLDEST)
  • any other data files related to your current campaign (look in Windows Explorer, sorting by date)
  • engine.log & frontend.log

  • simovitch -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 2:05:44 AM)

    I'll look into this a bit as well. I have a hunch it may be a simple fix.

    It would help to know which campaign each of the posters were playing, and which side?

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 3:28:41 AM)

    Also, are these DCGs or LCGs that are crashing?

    I've been playing a Rising Sun DCG recently without incident.

    Continuing a campaign game with 2.00 that was started in 1.04 is probably not a good idea. A brand new 2.00 campaign crashing is a serious matter, though, without doubt.

    Definitely.

    simovitch -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 4:40:40 AM)

    I can verify that I get the same error as the OP. This is a new crash.

    I think it's related to not patching over a clean install, which I have not done (I patched 2.00 over 1.4)

    I'll do a clean install and check again.

    That's what we recommend -- patching to 2.00 over a clean 1.00 install.

    That would be for which campaign?

    Thanks for your help with this!

    Salemi88 -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 6:05:21 AM)

    Hi Folks,

    Indeed it was a fresh new campaign in EF in a previously patched game to 1.04, then patched to 2.00

    I will try a clean install patched to 2.00 and report the results later...

    Thank you guys for the valuable help...

    Operation Barbarossa South as Germans, Battalion level with Talonsoft OOB.

    It might be another day or so before I get a result.

    Warhorse -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 2:55:01 PM)

    I believe Talonsoft OOB is suspect as well, they had problems?

    Jason Petho -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 4:19:34 PM)

    Yes, the Talonsoft OOB's had issues. They were removed from the ORG files a couple UPDATE's ago, but were reinstated due to popular demand with the caveat that they were not fixed.

    simovitch -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/22/2014 6:40:32 PM)

    Agreed, but we used to get past the first battle at least[:(]. Something else is amiss. I'm going to try one of the new OOB's with a clean install.

    After a clean install (now strongly recommended, if not required), immediately after any crash:

    Hi Berto,

    I've reinstalled the game, patched to 2.00 and played the first mission in EF with the same bugged result.

    It was a german campaign (MCS), panzer batallion, Army Group South and I've zipped the files but I don't know how to post it here.

    Would you help me?[:D]

    In the Reply to Message dialog box, there is a "Click here to upload!" link. Click on that, browse through to find the ZIP file, then click OK.

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/23/2014 3:33:31 AM)

    Ugh. As a developer, I can upload ZIP files directly, in the dev forum. But it seems we all can't do that in the public forum, where only "gif/txt/jpg are supported." [:(]

    The workaround? Change the extension on your .zip file to .txt, then try the upload.

    (Hmm, seems like I will have to amend my standard instructions to "upload the ZIP file".)

    Warhorse -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/23/2014 3:34:13 AM)

    You may have to change the .zip to .txt, to post it, we can then rename to .zip. That works fine, just did it on another post!!

    Warhorse -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/23/2014 3:35:30 AM)

    Really Berto!!!??[:D] We gotta quit meeting like this!!! I'm going to bed, for real this time!![>:]

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/23/2014 3:44:31 AM)

    Why, I was saying exactly the same thing to Petri over at The Blitz earlier today. [:D]

    Hi folks,

    Here it goes my campaign files... I hope I've done it right...[:D]

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/23/2014 4:46:14 PM)

    Okay, guys, I'm on the case.

    Now that I am done setting up for post-release tech support, on four separate dev & debug & test systems, each with five distinct JTCS installs

  • John Tiller's Campaign Series -- for debugging/crash & A/I testing on the three test/debug systems; for new development on the one dev system
  • John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00 -- for my own personal pleasure, my own game play (ha! when I have the time)
  • John Tiller's Campaign Series 2.00 ARCHIVE (READ ONLY) -- for reference
  • John Tiller's Campaign Series 1.04 ARCHIVE (READ ONLY) -- for reference
  • John Tiller's Campaign Series 1.00 ARCHIVE (READ ONLY) -- for reference

    all of those X 4, for the four systems (with a fifth on the way in June).

    Not to mention dev & test installs of Middle East and Vietnam.

    Not to mention dozens of installs in monthly backups dating back over the past year.

    I have to chuckle when I read players post about how they can't be hassled with doing and maintaining two separate installs. They and I live in entirely different tech worlds!

    Berto,

    Here is another set. Using XP, V2 East Front DCG.

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/25/2014 8:06:21 PM)

    I've found a bug, a serious one, in the code, most probably the cause of everybody's campaign crashes. More, after we decide how to deal with it.

    berto -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/25/2014 9:11:41 PM)

    Here is a quick & easy, kludgey fix for the campaign crash bug if your campaign is crashing at the conclusion of the very first campaign scenario:

    In your game folder, rename any Victory#.bmp files, as in

    Victory0.bmp -> Victory0 DONTUSE.bmp

    In a game like West Front, with many different nation sides, it would be easier to cut-and-paste all Victory#.bmp files to a temporary backup folder. In other words, take all Victory#.bmp files out of the picture.

    Then, at the Campaign menu, Resume Saves > Resume Mission.

    You should be able to get past the end of the first scenario without crash.

    It might be necessary to rename your previous .cpn file, as in

    Meise OLDER.cpn -> Meise.cpn

    which would have you revert back to one turn earlier, but that is probably unnecessary. Probably just leaving your save files as is and resuming your campaign and mission should suffice -- if you've moved out of the way the Victory#.bmp files first!

    Note: The Victory#.bmp kludge is not the proximate cause of the crash. But it detours around the impending crash, which has to do with the martial music that would play after the victory/draw/defeat voiceover rant. Who needs that chrome anyway?

    Sorry about the bug, but the above steps should work most likely. Most likely, but not certainly, if your campaign is crashing at some point other than the end of the first scenario, crashing in some other way.

    Another note: When we have released fixed game engine EXEs, you will want to restore all Victory#.bmp files to their proper places.

    Warhorse -> RE: 2.0 Campaign - Crash (2/25/2014 9:13:43 PM)

    Thanks very much, Berto!!

    Do we do anything with the Victory#.ogg files?
