Rigmoor -> Highlight Spotted Units ? (2/21/2014 12:20:54 PM)

Hi all,
the "Highlight Spotted Units"-Feature does not work when I play under "Fog of War". No Highlights (press S) and no Binoculars in the Unitbox even if my Units are near to enemy Units. When I change the AI Control to Computer (without FoW) then it works fine.

Thank you for help,[:)]
Thomas

WAD, and no different from 1.04.

Here is a screenshot from JTCS 1.04, Allied Human, Axis Computer with FOW, with Display > Highlight > Spotted Units selected:

The two forwardmost Japanese emplacements have fired on the two left forwardmost American combat groups.

Note:

  • The Japanese units are highlighted, indicating Spotted. Spotted by whom? The Americans, human player.
  • The American units are not highlighted, neither are the binocular icons showing in the Unit Box.

This is with Fog of War set to ON.

Doesn't this make sense? With FOW on, how would we know what's in the mind of the (computer) enemy? What are they thinking, what are they spotting? We don't know, we haven't the foggiest idea!

Here is a screenshot from JTCS 1.04, Allied Human, Axis Computer without FOW, with Display > Highlight > Spotted Units selected:

In this situation also, the two forwardmost Japanese emplacements have fired on the two forwardmost American combat groups.

    Note:

  • The Japanese units are highlighted, indicating Spotted. Spotted by whom? The Americans, human player.
  • The American units are also highlighted, and the binocular icons show in the Unit Box. Spotted by whom? The Japanese, computer player.

This is with Fog of War set to OFF.

How can you the American player know what's in the mind of the (computer) enemy? That they have spotted you? You can, because there is no Fog of War!

There is a logic in this (not our logic, the original game designer's logic), even if it's not plainly obvious, and even if a bit odd.

In any case, the behavior of 2.00 here is no different from 1.04. Both WAD, and both the same.

OK, then I have misunderstood the meaning of "Spotted Units".
I believed if my Unit has a binocular-icon they'll see enemy Units (have contact to enemy Units) and consequently is spotted with a high probability by the enemy. This means the next volley of 150 mm could go into this hex. Then it would be high time to consider whether the Unit leaves the hex or for example dismounts. It's a little circuitous to check the non visible hexes with the V key to find safer places. It is clear that I can not know whether I'm being watched by hidden enemy Units.

The Spotted icon in the Unit Info Box, also your units being highlighted with Display > Highlight > Spotted Units set to ON, indicates what the enemy can spot (and you somehow can read his mind), not what you can spot.

But you can know both ways, if you are willing to turn off FOW. (I am not.)
