Otto von Blotto -> v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 1:21:34 PM)

Thought I would start a EF campaign to check the new release and AI, Fresh install patched straight to v2 as advised.

End of first mission in Budapest to Vienna and it crashes at the medal phase, able to reload at the end the game press end turn scores come up, Rundstedt has his speech and then it crashes every time.

Warhorse -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 6:59:08 PM)

Ok guys, I used to play these all the time, haven't for awhile as I'm busy with projects for Matrix/Slitherine. Refresh my memory, what comes next after Rundstedts speech? There is a recurring theme to these crashes, I just can't put my finger on it. To be able to play even the first scenario of a DCG, obviously the program is picking forces, making a map and org, and assembling the scenario. Then, it seems everyone is able to play the first, and ONLY the first until you get to the speech/medal. Please refresh my memory as to the order of events after this? I'm a big fan of DCG's and want to help get this fixed!!

Otto von Blotto -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 7:25:43 PM)

as per bertos instructions crash details post 6 thanks for your time.

after the speech I think it goes to the campaign screen gives out medals as needed plays the anthem and is ready for the next game but it has been a while. [&:]

berto -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 8:05:08 PM)

I've found a bug, a serious one, in the code, most probably the cause of your and everybody else's campaign crashes. More, after we decide how to deal with it.

berto -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 9:13:52 PM)

A quick & easy and likely fix to your crash bug here.

Likely a fix, but possibly not, if your campaign is crashing in some other way.

Otto von Blotto -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 10:17:05 PM)

Thanks, that allows the game to continue for me anyway, cheers.

berto -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (2/25/2014 10:26:04 PM)

I'm so happy it solved your problem!

WP6T -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/7/2014 12:35:24 AM)

Same problem . Played 1 each battle EF and WF, DCG. Both did the same as Otto.

I had the same problem as Otto in the opening post. Finished first game of a DCG in EF, game crashed right after congratulations screen and before medals screen, could not proceed.
I used your work-around (moved files to a temp folder), resumed the mission (had to replay the last turn of first mission) and the game proceeded to next mission. Thanks for the work-around, it does just that [:)]

MrRoadrunner -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/7/2014 10:11:01 PM)

Interesting. The removal of the victory files does work.
Though, before I moved on to the next scenario in the campaign "the men under my command were issued the 'none'". No medals given out now?

Did no one try a campaign to vet out any issues?

Not screeching about this. Just wanted to avoid any frustrations during play. Which would have been avoided if someone on the team played a campaign and reported the crashes, and lack of medal awards, before the upgrade was released?

Warhorse -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/8/2014 2:55:27 AM)

Ed, we just didn't have time or any people to try it. I was wrapped up in the 2D project, which only got WF done, patch up soon, and now starting EF. It is a ton of work, but well worth it, been let go for 15 years, very little attention was given to that aspect! Other guys were testing other things as well, but there aren't many of us. Good news that problem has been taken care of, you just gotta wait a little longer, ok?! Thanks for all you guys patience, we are trying!

Matter of fact myself and Berto as well as others are big campaign/AI fans, so we are really trying to make the AI player eventually much better, well, Berto is, I do my part graphically, he has the hard part!![:D]

Hang in Ed.

TAIL GUNNER -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/8/2014 6:04:18 AM)

Why not release patches as open Betas?

For the Close Combat games, GG's War in the East, and probably others, all patches are released to the public as BETAs first....hell I think some of the CC patches stayed Beta for a year or more before becoming official. When I was deep into WitE, they were releasing beta updates almost weekly!

More eyes, much more testing...and let's be honest, avid players make the best testers. [:D]

Oh absolutely! How 2.00 played out is not too far from what you suggested. 1.05 as it then was called was originally planned to be released after the next Modern Wars titles, but with the unified codebase for all engines (still the greatest new feature imo!) it was decided to release 2.0 now and not a year from now.

And good thing it was, as it is this very codebase that will be integral to MW titles as well. Any bugs crushed out now will be crushed from the MW as well.

We are waiting for just a little longer to see if any other issues should pop out before releasing 2.01. Then, it is all about MW flat out until these titles come out.

Very unfortunate glitch with the linked campaigns. That part of the code base was not touched at all, but of course Mr Murphy found a way to get his greasy fingrers in there. There's a lot of testing before the releases come out, we had a full month with code and content freeze in effect, lots of testing utilities, automated testing, but given the complexities with the whole set up it is certain we just can't sort everything out in one go. And of course, when touching something there's the risk for new glitches.

MrRoadrunner -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/8/2014 1:54:56 PM)

Uh, you guys could have asked me to try it out? [:)]
I could have commented privately about the the crashes and lack of medals, ... the archive files ... the small buttons, etc. [;)]

The archive files and toolbar icons were out in the open well in advance, the campaign bug we decided to do completely on our own however [:'(]

wlmiv -> RE: v2 EF Campaign crash (3/9/2014 10:46:50 PM)

I am having a similar difficulty. I was in the middle of a campaign when I uploaded version 2.0. Now I cannot move past the last battle I was fighting. Von Rundstedt speaks and then the game crashes.

I saw on the forum that there was a quick fix, but I am baffled by the explanation. It says to "Open the CampaignName.ccd file in a text editor (NOTEPAD)." I have no idea how to find the campaign game or where it is saved. I have looked at the Campaign Series file in my computer, but I do not see any file for saved games. I have also looked at the subfolder for East Front but the only folders there are "pictures" and "special."

Can anyone assist me. I am rather frustrated.

Here is a quick & easy, kludgey fix for the campaign crash bug if your campaign is crashing at the conclusion of the very first campaign scenario:

In your game folder, rename any Victory#.bmp files, as in

Victory0.bmp -> Victory0 DONTUSE.bmp

In a game like West Front, with many different nation sides, it would be easier to cut-and-paste all Victory#.bmp files to a temporary backup folder. In other words, take all Victory#.bmp files out of the picture.

Then, at the Campaign menu, Resume Saves > Resume Mission.

You should be able to get past the end of the first scenario without crash.

It might be necessary to rename your previous .cpn file, as in

Meise OLDER.cpn -> Meise.cpn

which would have you revert back to one turn earlier, but that is probably unnecessary. Probably just leaving your save files as is and resuming your campaign and mission should suffice -- if you've moved out of the way the Victory#.bmp files first!

Note: The Victory#.bmp kludge is not the proximate cause of the crash. But it detours around the impending crash, which has to do with the martial music that would play after the victory/draw/defeat voiceover rant. Who needs that chrome anyway?

Sorry about the bug, but the above steps should work most likely. Most likely, but not certainly, if your campaign is crashing at some point other than the end of the first scenario, crashing in some other way.

Another note: When we have released fixed game engine EXEs, you will want to restore all Victory#.bmp files to their proper places.

In your case, I recommend that you use Windows Explorer to create a temporary backup folder somewhere, then in your top level game folder (for the game where you are experiencing the campaign crash) cut-and-paste all Victory*.bmp files from that folder to the backup folder. That should solve your immediate problem. Note also the second highlight.

Sorry for the problem. Good luck!
