Can anyone recommend any?

Welcome back!

"Stand Up" (UK side) is frequently mentioned as a favorite first scen.

wodin -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/11/2014 5:34:32 PM)

Thanks!!

Dimitris -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/11/2014 7:11:37 PM)

(If anyone else has a favorite starter scen please do add!)

Stand Up is a very good scen to start with. If you play as the UK, you generally outmatch the enemy and it is good practice to figure out the mission editor. Youll set up AAW patrols and learn how refueling works. There are opportunities to do Air to surface attacks. (ASuW) And you can do a classic Harpoon missile attack if you choose.

Plus youll get a grip on sensors and what they can and cannot do. (No magical Aegis systems in this scenario!)

i started with Down Town (does it counts as small?) ... those Vietnam war has some facination to me
(i guess because of the mixtures of movie-scenes and books ive read spinning in my memory)

I always recommend South China Clash, you get a taste of surface, subsurface, and air warfare. Nothings to complex and the action is fast paced.

+1 to Downtown

Hartford is especially good to practice for submarines, and can be very quickly and repeatedly played through.

Dimitris -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/12/2014 12:36:52 PM)

Steve, do you mean "Trapped Under Ice"? That one is small but also a bit hard, and can be frustrating for beginners.

Flankerk -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/12/2014 1:23:19 PM)

Yes but figured this was good practice. I wouldn't say its too difficult or an easy one really.
Perhaps playing anything Yokes has made has skewed my world view!

Steve

One I quite like as a simple-but-challenging scenario is The Battle of Dong Hoi. It's done from a mainly-nautical perspective, but gives the player a good range of tasks to perform. It's set at that era when gunnery was being augmented by missiles.

I've played it a few times as new builds have become available, and the AI and other behaviour has got steadily better.

I'd rate it better for beginners than Downtown, which is excellent but complex and higher up the learning curve.

Phoenix100 -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/12/2014 8:10:06 PM)

I like the old Dawn Patrol scenarios, Jason. There's now 4 in there that do the old Harpoon Dawn patrol thing (Russians v Norway) in a much better way - tbhey're called 'First Contact' and they do it from the 50s through to the future with different kit accordingly. Great beginner scenarios.

Thanks everyone.

Eambar -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/13/2014 2:29:48 PM)

+1 for the 'First Contact' scenarios, I found them very useful and engaging, from both sides.

Cheers,

Excellent thread. Thank you from me as well.

I found The Vanuatu Crisis scenario in the community pack to be a good scenario to get started with - it only includes a small number of units and is fairly forgiving, but you need to deploy your assets sensibly to avoid embarrassing losses (on my first attempt the destroyer suffered heavy damage from small craft attacks because I didn't have any aerial patrols out or the radar turned on!).

Firov -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/14/2014 4:52:45 PM)

Personally, as far as easy beginner scenarios go, I liked the mission involving a battle between Spain and Morocco due to a dispute over ownership of offshore oil rigs.

It's a small scenario, with only ~4 ships plus a submarine on your side and a couple of air bases. Plus, you don't have to worry about setting up ground attack missions. I believe it's called "Green Tide"? I managed to complete it with only the loss of a P3 Orion. Though one of my Perry class frigates was badly damaged when a single Exocet from a huge swarm managed to slip through it's anti-missile missiles and CIWS. The crew was barely able to contain the fires and flooding.

There's also a more complex follow up mission where Morocco takes over the island airbases you used in Green Tide and you have to retake them. This mission is a bit more complex though, as there are a lot more units in play on both sides. You command two task forces (one carrier, one amphibious landing) as well as a handful of submarines, plus a number of land based aircraft. You'll also learn about ASW in this one. It's a fun scenario and a nice follow up to Green Tide, and it's still not too difficult since Spain seems to pretty easily outmatch Morroco. EDIT - I'm pretty sure it's name is "Caged Canary".

JSF -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/15/2014 1:57:31 PM)

After losing "Maria & Victoria" several times, I switched over to Stand Up". This seems to turn out better for me, though the enemy had the first shot (his units were classified neutral until they sunk my vessel). Got five Argie ac in return so far.

cwemyss -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/15/2014 3:36:40 PM)

Use your air assets to go identify the "neutral" shipping, they'll shoot at your Merlin or Sea King instead of sinking your frigate to open hostilities.

Ah, ok, thx for the hint.

JSF -> RE: Small beginner scenarios (3/16/2014 8:01:48 AM)

So I Need to restart this one, since the loss of the frigate canīt be compensated?
