I don't know how this snuck past my radar. That is an F-35 with the potential to carry twelve, hit-to-kill MRAAM's, internally... Which means a single F-22 could shoot down a small air force, single-handedly.
I thought it rather snazzy. Can I get a whut whut?

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 10:48:16 PM)

Whut whut!!!

lol, yea, knew about it, but so little is known I don't think the developers could put it in the sim.

http://elementsofpower.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-mysterious-lm-cuda-missile.html

Claimed range is on par with the later AIM-120's and also thrust vectoring holes with hit to kill technology like the PAC-3 interceptor. Wicked! [&o]

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 10:59:46 PM)

I thought this was pleasantly interesting as well, as I have been a fan of the TRIPLE TARGET TERMINATOR (T3) AAM- which is weapons system that is supposed to be able to target air-to-air, as well as air-to-surface targets (Like an air-breathing HARM/AARGM) as required.

The advertisement shows an ability to hit and kill moving vehicles, such as technicals? Now, that's really cool!

Dimitris -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 11:15:52 PM)

Yes, we're aware of it and we are searching for hard technical data in order to implement it faithfully. Unclassified details welcome!

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 11:18:27 PM)

Unfortunately, this cat doesn't have need-to-know. I will be happy to post those details when I find out more.

VFA41_Lion -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 11:23:46 PM)

That little itty bitty thing is medium range??? :o

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/19/2014 11:28:17 PM)

Think about it, since it doesn't have the extra weight of an actual explodey payload, weighs less and can have more volume inside for solid fuel, etc.

I'd imagine an F-22 at supercruise and F-35 at just over mach would help the range though when it's launched.

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 2:02:12 AM)

If the image of the weapon is accurate to the actual missile, a yellow ring denotes high-explosive. I understand of course that hit-to-kill typically involves an inert mass. Perhaps it has a self destruct charge, or the booster itself is explosive if the remaining fuel is still unspent?

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 2:17:47 AM)

Well, you have a point there, but it wouldn't be the first time the brochure was a little different than the actual product lol.

see below:

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/details-emerge-about-lockheeds-cuda-missile-382670/

It physically uses the entire missile body to wreck the target, neat concept that's for sure.

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 2:55:11 AM)

That's a great pic, Almighty. What do you make of the circular mesh fore body? As we know it's not an explosive charge in that section, like it would normally be, what do you think that is? I'm wondering if that might be some sort of dense metal fragmentation that gets ejected due to impact. Sort of like the pre-scoring and dimples that make up the fragmentation sleeve of a grenade or cannon shell. My first thought was, that's some kind passive EM antenna.

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 3:05:13 AM)

It's something far more interesting my friend. Look at the PAC-3 hit to kill missile, ever wonder how these things achieve such maneuverability? Each of those holes is an attitude control thruster.

The clues are here:

This is a Patriot PAC-3 hit to kill missile:

And a video of the proposed F-15's carrying PAC-3's, you can see the same ACM's being used in the terminal phase, and in the launch animation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnVHEmROaMM

quote:

The ACS contains 180 solid propellant Attitude Control Motors (ACMs) that thrust perpendicular to the centerline of the missile to provide pitch and yaw control during the homing phase. The ACMs are spaced evenly around the centerline of the missile in rings containing 18 motors. There are 10 rings in the ACS in the longitudinal direction for a total of 180 motors. The ACMs are commanded by the Motor Fire Circuit (MFC).

From the earlier link I posted:

I did manage to find a closeup of the PAC 3 ACM module being manufactured in a Lockheed Martin PAC-3 product brochure. It appears to be just as the one described in the ERINT-1 paper.

The discovery of what the magic spots were all about greatly simplified some assumptions that needed to be made as to CUDA missile weights, which in turn can give us clues in estimating performance.

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 3:13:32 AM)

Ah, yes, I'd read some people's opinions that the Cuda had that capability, but I didn't expect so many thrusters. Wow. That would have to produce some incredible G-forces and tight turn radii. Within the range of it's booster's horizontal limits, it would have no problem maneuvering to intercept. A human pilot could not survive the G's necessary to out-turn it.

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 3:19:24 AM)

Yea, I'd say if it becomes a reality, that's a new game changer in aerial warfare.

Check out the video in my post above for the air launched PAC-3 :D

NakedWeasel -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 3:30:31 AM)

Yes, I've been interested in the ERINT AAM for a while. So many fantastic technologies available, so little implementation.

dillonkbase -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 12:47:18 PM)

so... just to be clear.. the benefit of hit to kill is that you don't waste weight on a warhead? and the lose of said warhead can now be compensated for by improved accuracy? I still remember watching scuds and patriots streak across the TV during the gulf war... This seems like a giant leap in tech.

AlmightyTallest -> RE: Have you heard about the CUDA? (3/20/2014 2:39:19 PM)

Well, it's one of the benefits not having to have a warhead, the other is the extreme agility of the missile using all those thrusters to ensure quick and accurate guidance against another maneuvering high speed missile. The first gulf war used the rather large warhead of PAC-1 and PAC-2's. After lessons learned we got PAC-2GEM+ which still had the large warhead.

Finally went to PAC-3 with no warhead using the technology demonstrated above. And where you had a launcher that had 4 PAC-2 missiles, that same volume and single launcher can now carry 16 PAC-3's, big size difference.

I remember those videos too, we just got cable back then, and I was on the phone describing what I was seeing to a friend who couldn't see the live images I was. It certainly changed my life.

Here's a video of PAC-3 interceptions. The little dashed contrail lines are the thrusters being used to correct the aim of the missile body to hit the incoming missile.

Also, for interest, check out this video, it shows how the systems are networked with Aegis to intercept with SM-3, which is also a hit to kill missile. Beginning is sort of slow, but get's interesting later.
