duettoalfa -> naval attack on a base with no ships... and no SEA! (3/29/2014 11:06:08 AM)

my albacores on a naval attack mission with no secondary mission selected (and no ground attack for sure)
decided to perform a naval attack on an inland base. any explanation?

they should stop whiskey [:D]

indeed!
I'm happy they performed a mission at all, for their collegues on vildebeest and swordfish have not flown a mission since dec 7th: they simply
won't fly, whatever I try (change leader, change base, rest them, bribe them, give them whiskey)

Vildebeest don't carry ordnance with drop tanks, at least in stock. you need to keep them with drop tanks off for them to attack anything. Can't speak to your swordfish problem.

Had the same problem with the Vildebeests also in Stock scen 1. Their first attack was by the end orf february when they attacked ships in Moulmein out of Rangoon ... I never found out why the left out so much juicy targets in Singers and the DEI before. And yes, I always had them without drop tanks and at range 4 so they could carry torps and not bombs.

Misconduct -> RE: naval attack on a base with no ships... and no SEA! (3/29/2014 5:32:50 PM)

I don't recall ever getting to use Vildabeests or Swordfish, generally anytime I do they get shot down without as much as a scratch being done.

my vildebeests are not using droptanks either (I tried both ways anyway). End of feb is approaching, I might have a chance then...
It's true, those shaky biplanes are no threat to japs, but in my first pbem they flew, and now and again they would put a torpedo here and there (which is Always useful)
Still no clue to the albacores' NAVAL attack to an inland base...

Well,

the success of the Vildebeests depends on the defense on the other side. I´ve seen highly successful attacks of these stringbags against lightly defended invasion convoys. On the other hand, try to attack a CV/BB TF with them, and you will see a lot of destroyed airframes without any success ...

I've seen juicy targets passing by and my pilots never moved from the local pub: I've tried giving them escort,
aggressive commanders, supplies, strong ale, but nothing...[>:] [>:]

Change command HQ?

What's the point? just another try, or any logic in it? I wouldnt like to waste my (few) PP in a try!

jmalter -> RE: naval attack on a base with no ships... and no SEA! (4/1/2014 11:00:30 PM)

it might not be only the whiskey, they certainly wouldn't want to interrupt their bridge games, either.

more seriously - the game-engine performs an air-superiority check at the beginning of each turn. I don't know if it's done by regions or per base - but I had lots of (almost always British) LB & TB airgroups in China & Malaysia refuse to fly attack missions, presumably b/c they didn't want to be slaughtered. It took awhile, and plenty of reinforcing fighter-groups, before they'd take to the air.

I had the same thought, and I've given them some escort, maybe it's not enough. I have to say though that carrier-based swordfish flew and got slaughtered.

Does the HQ at the base have torp ordinance? If no then the air unit probably flew the only mission it could. Bombing of an inland base.
And of course the right BRAND of whiskey helps.[:'(]

Maybe they thought they found an imported Land Cruiser P. 1000 "Rat". [;)]

they were carrier based... and I'm serving them Tullamore Dew, they appreciate though they're brits[sm=00000436.gif]

Alfred -> RE: naval attack on a base with no ships... and no SEA! (4/4/2014 6:46:50 PM)

Soerakarta is incorrectly classified as a base.  That means the code treats it as having access to the sea.
