Tombstone -> Direct fire hvy artillery (2/6/2003 1:38:16 PM)

As far as hvy direct-fire guns are concerned I'm beginning to go from like to need. Things like german SIG-II's (and SPA), and the Sherman 105 are SO useful on the battlefield. Especially when going against defensive positions. Moving up with recon units and the map zoomed out waiting to spot or get fired upon then using the hvy guns to area fire into the hex (or in ultra-sensitive situations an adjacent hex) to suppress is a very effective tactic for me. The standard horror is AT guns hiding in good terrain, unless the number of guns arrayed against you is too great or the circumstances too disadvantageous you can really cut back on losses. In the case of the Sherman 105's they also have smoke... so if you find yourself in a bad sitauation (which certainly happens) you can smoke the recon unit (which is extra nice in campaigns where you have high experience units). You can increase the speed at which towns are assaulted by a lot. Not having to wait for the artillery (which should still be utilised) is a major advantage in a turn based game. When it comes to infantry assaults on vehicles, the difference between pinned and not pinned is the difference between can and cant. With direct fire hvy guns and tanks you can root out enemy infantry in bad terrain without infantry support (which you should still have). My point is that a lot of options open up for the SPWAW player in the advance/assault.

Sturmpionier -> fire-brigades too (2/6/2003 10:09:05 PM)

I also like to keep a contingent (in battles where I have them) as part of a fire-brigade in defend/delay scens. Just a few will really break up an inf. advance and buy lots of time with minimal risk.

Orzel Bialy -> It's Always Wise... (2/6/2003 10:19:42 PM)

to have a little on-board Arty/Support detachment available to lay down direct fire. Depending on off-board arty or mortars can leave you in jam at times in terms of ToT and mobility...so some mobile armored support is never a bad choice in my book! ;)

Once available my favorite is the STuG42...nicely armored...low profile... lethal to any infantry that cross it's path, even if they hide out in brush or buildings...and can suppress and even kill T-34's and KV-1's at close range!

Belisarius -> (2/7/2003 12:52:40 AM)

....I assume that's StuH 42 you mean, Orzel? :cool:

I agree, one of my favourites as well. Just wonderful to have a few follow your battle tanks around, and they can give infantry a hand as well.

As for firing over open sights - tsk tsk.. that's sooo WWI :rolleyes: :rolleyes: Nonetheless, it works.

Btw, Orzel, that's one awesome banner! :p

Orzel Bialy -> I hate when that happens.... (2/7/2003 1:21:55 AM)

yes Bel, I didn mean the H version. :)

I have become used to typing in the StuG title since I have been using them so much more often...they are very useful in their own right! ;)

ps...like the banner eh? Feel free to use it. :) My next piece of artwork is a medal that will be handed out to anyone who took on and kicked the snot out of Jess and his M4's in those 1-1 contests! :D

Heheh cool. I'm on that list as well. :cool:

Heh. Right.

I'm reading "the Rommel Papers" right now (a good book for anyone, btw!), and it seems like the ol' desert fox himself liked to have AA and arty up front all the time, especially in France '40. :o

I stand corrected. Heh, I've even changed tactics myself. :p

Wolfleader -> (2/21/2003 7:39:43 AM)

I usually use the Wurfrahmen's in direct fire mode once I've started advancing towards the enemy. The blast from the 280 mm rockets does a good job of routing or decimating concealed inf units. Gotta be careful no friendly infs are around the blast radius though.

Once the Sturmtigers become available I switch to those.

Try this,

I used this method on both human and computer oponent. It always works.

Position the Support tank behind a slope. Move one square up the top of the hill. Spot a target? use indirect fire, move back to the slope and press F..... fun right..... nobody firing at u....

I used Su-152 and KV-2 and destroyed or disabled my friend Tiger. Talk 0.0 delay 152 artillery......

maniacalmonkey -> (3/8/2003 2:39:04 AM)

I played the Omaha Beach scenario vs. AI once, pretty terrible slaughter. There was so little I could do against the German bunkers, I decided to pull my Howitzers out of the surf and use them as direct-fire bunker busters. They worked too!

And just imagine the artillery crew, sitting comfortably behind the safety of a lot of smoke and a very big gun... Until some furious officer comes along shouting "I've f***ing had it with those bunkers, get that gun up on the beach and pop 'em!" :D

Pardon my english but........ Huh?

:confused:
You fire from behind the slope? After using the B key to target the objective? Or use the T key, then move, then F key?

Position behind the slope.

Then move one square up to the slope to see your enemy.

press Z to target and fire the area you want.

Move back one sqaure.

Then press F to fire again.

:)

Really? :D I'll try it. Is it legal and was it used IRL? I suppose it could have been used IRL. Its like spotting for yourself.
