P-61 Black Widow

Built a model of that one as a kid [:)]

Dili -> RE: Name this plane? (4/26/2014 8:36:46 PM)

You have to ask a more difficult questions. This an expert forum :)

Terminus -> RE: Name this plane? (4/26/2014 9:38:27 PM)

You're kidding, right? There are no military aircraft that served in the Pacific theatre during World War II that this forum doesn't know.

KZ VIII Lark, a bit post war isnt it?? (Or is it a KZ III??)

JeffroK -> RE: Name this plane? (4/26/2014 10:26:12 PM)

P61A-1-NO Black Widow of 419th Night Fighter Squadron.

Serial 42-5507

The wiki pic says 419th NF Sqn but Joe Baugher's site says 418th Sqn, lost in South Pacific Apr 10, 1945 MACR 13784

Never post a pic from the wikipedia front page.

wdolson -> RE: Name this plane? (4/26/2014 10:37:47 PM)

More specifically it's an early production P-61A. The P-61 used the same top turret mechanism as the B-29 and there was a shortage of turrets. Northrop got a handful of them which went into the early P-61 production, but then no more were available, so most P-61A and the early Bs had no top turret. It's obviously an A because all Bs were painted gloss black and this one is OD.

I don't remember the numbers but there were only something like 50 P-61A built with turrets.

The turret initially gave the engineers fits too. The shape caused horrible buffeting when rotated. The Northrop engineers went through a large number of new shapes before hitting on the teardrop shape on the production Black Widow. Until the problem was resolved a lot of early Black Widows had their turret motors disconnected and the turret fixed straight forward.

Bill

Hold on Termy. It says right in the Wiki that they were used in the Pacific and China during WW2

From the markings I'd say it was a British plane. Seeing how the other plane is a Fokker DR1 I'm guessing probably of WW1 vintage. Maybe a Sopwith Pup? [:)]

Gary, I'll give you the points but baby camels are not called pups, they're called calves.

Well dang! I was totally off on that one!

Ahhhh, I do remember that situation. [sm=00000018.gif]

Spotted him too late. Tried some flat scissors to shake him, but the bastard wouldn´t let go. Damn Dr.I, much lower wing load than my old Sopwith Doghouse. Stalled 2 times. Went into a dive, but he noticed immediately. Stupid decision. Rest is history. Am lucky I am here to tell the story.

wdolson -> RE: Name this plane? (4/27/2014 7:22:18 AM)

Whatever it is, you can see the dogged determination on the pilot's face. [:D]

Panzerfausts on a Storch?

No madder than the dedicated "Bicycle Tank Destroyer battalion" the Hitler Youth tried in 1945

Terminus -> RE: Name this plane? (4/27/2014 8:29:18 AM)

No Storch, that one. Low-winged monoplane, not high-winged.

It's a Bücker 181C-3.

warspite1 -> RE: Name this plane? (4/27/2014 8:33:39 AM)

EDIT: good grief [8|] [:-]

GI Jive -> RE: Name this plane? (4/27/2014 1:28:47 PM)

Looks like a Beaufort.

Bill

GI Jive -> RE: Name this plane? (4/27/2014 11:49:50 PM)

Beaufort it is! Thought the head on view would make it tricky. Here she is from the side.

Isn't that a Faerey Firefly or some such thing? A RN recon plane?

Sorry, I didn't read Terminus' answer.

Looks like a Panzerfaust hanging from the wing, though.

geofflambert -> RE: Name this plane? (4/28/2014 1:48:04 AM)

We talk about war movies alot in this forum, why don't we make this a short thread on "The Blue Max"? What are the feelings out there about that one?

JeffroK -> RE: Name this plane? (4/28/2014 6:39:46 AM)

Its an Australian made Beaufort being booked for speeding by some Yankee MP!

It is. The Bü 181C3 was a "tankbuster" variant with four Panzerfausts mounted on the wings.

Erkki -> RE: Name this plane? (4/28/2014 9:54:36 AM)

How about this one? (should be easy)
