Endy -> Sweep + LRCAP (4/27/2014 9:32:36 AM)

Hi,

in a PBEM I had some of my planes from an LRCAP mission join a sweep on a target. Is there a general consensus about using LRCAP over the target in connection with sweeps to have the aircraft attack in big groups instead of the usual separate squadrons? What I'd like to know is if this is considered gamey or perfectly legit in PBEMs?

If it's legit then is it worth using it at all or is it better to just have separate groups set on sweep? I'm not very experienced in this regard and would also not like to be doing something that is considered not ok in a PBEM...

It is a matter of taste. The LRCAP makes sure that you have a high chance of friendly aircraft in the area but they are not stronger then sweeping (nor as numerous as they have to follow LRCAP rules) and you can't be sure that they will actually engage enemy aircraft..

Sometimes people use it as a substitute for escort functions but the planes on CAP are not great at protecting bombers... Just talk to your opponent and see how he feels about it...

Yeah, I was intending to talk to him about that, I was just curious about the general opinion. Thank you for the explanation Cannonfodder.

Yep LRCAP'ing an enemy base is a way of making sure you have some friendly air cover for your bombers attacking the base just incase their escorts fail to fly. They perform slightly better than escorts but not as well as sweeps, also the pilots accrue fatigue quite quickly. Some players don't like this use of LRCAP but I think its fine as both sides can take advantage of it.

I do it all the time. No problem here.

Don't think it's gamey, it's a kind of tactic. Supposing some planes sweep to clear the hex, you leave some patrol to be sure nothing come after that, although it increase fatigue a lot more than sweep or escort so it's really tricky to use.

IIRC, a sweep is an 'offensive' mission, which requires level 2 or higher base. Thus, to get fighters over an enemy base, your only options would be LRCAP or escort.
