Use the paint bucket to make them off white...gray or something a little less harsh on the eyes.

Try filing them with this:

It is neat catching up on your AAR...thanks for doing it.[&o]

You could also turn your monitor brightness setting down, less damaging on your eyes! [:-]

We actually had a sync bug on May 9. My CVs reveal themselves outside Lautem, and in the middle of my own strikes we get this nice bit of attrition on the IJAAF/IJNAF:

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 9:08:03 PM)

In support of the CV strikes (not wanting to lose lots of veteran Hellcat pilots to a huge CAP at Lautem), I nightbomb the airfield and sweep from Darwin. It is absolutely brutal. Japan loses 199 planes on May 9 after losing 113 on May 8.

How's this color, Lowpe? Just eyedropper tooled from the WITP combat report... so bland [;)].

It turns out I could have spread my sweeps over to Dili also. The 102-plane P-47 sweep was beautiful.

Meanwhile, obvert, over at Taberfane, this is happening periodically. I think he is trying to attrit my pools, leaving me unable to fight later on. More on that in a future post when I get to my Tracker data, but let's just say I'm pretty happy with the recent results.

Still results for May 9, 1944.

A peek at the SCTFs outside Bathurst. We're also using this CV support opportunity to escort some supplies and Seabees up to Babar on AKs/LSTs.

Resolution of May 10, 1944 - continuing the "close up recap" of the happenings in the area before we switch back to the big picture stuff I've been posting.

Unfortunately, we lose CL Montpelier to a mine hit and then 2 mini-sub torpedoes after the bombardment phase. However, we sink 4 more of the SSX's. He only gets 86 of these (I think), and we've already sunk somewhere in the 50's. He's going to run out before we get to 1945 at this rate.

We bombard Lautem with all 3 SC TFs. It is essentially shut down. Japan loses another 202 aircraft on the day, with the sweeps continued against Lautem and some all the way over in Burma.

There's also this:
quote:

Submarine attack near Sepandjang at 61,106

Japanese Ships
CLAA Tenryu
CS Mizuho
DD Hatsuharu
DD Urakaze

Allied Ships
SS Spearfish, hits 15, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

SS Spearfish sighted by escort [8|]

Why hello MKB...

Which is not too far from this:

F6F-3 Hellcat x 179

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5b Zero: 9 destroyed

No Allied losses

My CAP was set to 25K, 15K, 24K, 27K, 28K, 17K, 15K, and 7K for possible strato-torpedoes.

Others shot down at Babar, where my cruisers retired to after bombarding Lautem.

We have an unorthodox game, and I feel like I play rather differently from other folks (somewhat of a "zoomed out" approach, if you will), so it's nice to post my successes and berate myself for mistakes.

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 9:48:24 PM)

I also chose this hex because of its distance from:

Soerabaja, 13, outside of Jill range
Dili, 8, at long range for Judy (250kg only) and a bit harder to get escorts
Kendari, 9, outside of Judy range and at long range for escorts if there are any Lily-IIc DBs

Waingapoe is a relative unknown, but we think we'll be OK. Only search planes have been based there so far.

But most importantly, we picked this location because it is 7 hexes from Makassar, because we thought MKB might stop over there. KB has stopped there before, we think. And the LBA there has been pretty light every time we've checked.

Look at that perfect circle I drew on accident in 0.5 seconds [;)].

About 5-6 raids go through. Not nearly as much as we'd like, and enough Irvings on night CAP to prevent us from destroying the place.

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 10:09:41 PM)

This is not where we expected MKB to show up, but this works out great for us. Extremely short range battle.

My guys reacted 1 hex to the east anyway, despite being well within range. Unsure if the CV react bug fix would have changed this behavior, but it hadn't been fixed yet I think. This was under version .25c.

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 10:13:23 PM)

First, some LBA. A bit heavier on escorts than I expected.

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 10:18:22 PM)

Then MKB comes in - the IJN getting the first strike, as usual.

I've seen worse damage. If this is the worst of it, we should be in for a great day. No explosion messages or anything. Only 38 Zeroes on escort, though - there might be more CAP over the enemy than anticipated.

15 Judys and 54 Jills actually made it to drop their loads. More than I would have liked.

Does that mean you did NOT get Ryujo with one torpedo that day?

In the same May 9 screenshot it shows AOs with the Japanese TF that traveled 16 hexes or so. Since the fastest AO speed I know is 18 kts, I worked that out to 432 miles in one day or 10.8 hexes. I suppose 2X cruise speed could get them to 16 hexes, and that would confirm the full speed sprint. He will use a lot of ops points refuelling from those AOs ...

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 10:26:53 PM)

My CAP does start to get worn down. Initial reaction numbers decline, but overall it does very well. Kept the same settings from previous days, more or less, with adjustments for the anticipated battle (such as setting 100% CAP for defensive groups, and dedicated escort groups).

No, Ryujo took the 1 torpedo. I had my opponent send me the combat report text. Also, the combat report that is loaded up with the 'C' key when you load the orders file is always the correct combat text.

In my experience, CVs are often listed as CS, TK, AV, or AO on these reports. It was definitely KB, given that I had detection on them because they launched strikes on my DDs to the SW.

Wonder what his settings were for CAP? Not much airborne. What are your squadrons fatigue after a day at 100% ? I've never tried it, never done more than 50% with my carrier jocks.

Lokasenna -> RE: Headhunter - Lokasenna (A) vs. mind_messing (J) - No MM yet (2/25/2016 11:10:04 PM)

Multiple sunk ship sounds at noon. No strikes are launched from the MKB hex in the afternoon, unsurprisingly.

A few Bettys do make it through to try to drop bombs on CV Lexington, but miss. Must've run out of torpedoes, I guess.

For our part, we land a 1000-lb bomb on CM Itsukushima, heavy damage reported. B-24s bomb the port at Lautem and CA Haguro is there, taking 1 additional hit on deck armor. Still on fire. Our sole raid of 6 TBFs on the MKB hex doesn't score any reported hits, but sights DD Shiranui and CS Mizuho, heavy fires, heavy damage. Makes me think that everything I hit in the morning went down in flames. Especially with this screenshot.

Now, some might be in escort TFs and therefore not sighted, but who knows? I figure there are some DDs leftover. My opponent said that he was trying to ambush my CVs, but I think he overestimated the effectiveness of his LBA against my CAP.

I recommend it, every time you send CVs up for battle... in my experience, 100% CAP units and 100% escort units are the best way to go. If you expect to have to run CAP continuously, 80% is the highest safe level for SR1 planes and 70% is the highest safe level for SR2 planes or your high altitude CAP (above 20K). Otherwise fatigue and morale will climb.

Here are my guys the day after the battle. Note that CV Intrepid is dedicated solely to fighters, with a size 42 (regular size) and size 54 (used a Brit CV in 1942 to resize) unit on board. That size 54 unit didn't fly at all - fatigue of 0. I don't think my Hellcats on Cabot flew either. It looks like all of my escorts came from CVL's Belleau Wood, Princeton, and Cowpens. I use them because their groups come in with lower XP numbers than the CVs, for the most part, and I'd rather have my better guys on CAP and my worse guys on escort where they're more likely to die.

Note that my bomber crews are not that great.

Still catching up. This is from May 10. Current game turn for June 12 is in my inbox, along with turns for my other 2 games as well.... Don't tell my opponent(s) that I'm making screenshots and posting here instead of playing the turns.

I realized that I was about to post the May 15, 1944, update for this theater and it would be silly to do so without documenting the big turns.
