swizzlewizzle -> Warp gates and wormholes? (5/1/2014 7:45:39 AM)

So far I haven't seen anything suggesting we can put in wormholes and static warp gates... Has anyone seen a way we might be able to bring in something similar?

There seems to be no mechanic for that and no associated coding I would guess.
However, high FTL speeds make the galaxy very small come end game as it is.

On large maps even the fastest FTL speeds seem pretty slow. If we can't make warp gates or wormholes in Universe it would be nice to be able to increase the fastest FTL speeds to help speed up the end game (noting most of us don't play to Victory).

Really. It like takes a week gametime to circumnavigate the whole galaxy.I am hoping modding allows me to make the galaxy actually feel big.

A week to circumnavigate large galaxies ... err just no dude. Each to their own though. I'd also like even bigger galaxies if possible.

Does not the ini parameters at the beginning allow you to set the warp speed... does that not help make it feel big?

The problem is you want limited range and not snail paced speed which would hurt gameplay.

Ashbery, I want to limit range, too, and I'm pretty confident that Universe will allow that to be done. From what we've seen on the component design, you can increase the fuel usage of warp engine.

So far as wormholes and warpgates are concerned, I don't see how it's going to be possible to do that, although I suspect you can come close to simulating it just by giving warp drives very high speeds. I don't know whether there will be a limit on warp speed (hope not), but if there isn't it will be possible to make warp drive more or less instantaneous.

Is it possible to get ships with multiple warp drives?

Ahhh... I understand. Thank you for explaining...

If I'm not mistaken, you can currently design and build ships with multiple warp drive components, and the resulting vessel will have something along the lines of the following:
- Hyper speed will be the greatest hyper speed offered by the drives it carries (i.e. if you have a Gerax for 18150 and a Calista-Dal for 15000, your ship's hyper speed will be 18150).
- Jump initiation time will be the lowest of the drives (so if you have a Kaldos drive with a jump initiation of 7 seconds and an Equinox drive with a jump initiation of 13 seconds, your ship will take 7 seconds to initiate a hyperjump).
- Hyperdrive energy usage will be equal to the largest energy usage of a single drive (so with a 103 energy Gerax and a 60 energy Calista-Dal, hyperdrive energy usage is 103).

Incidentally, this last point ensures that there's absolutely no reason to include a Warp Bubble Generator even as a backup hyperdrive - despite the most basic level of Gerax Hyperdrive being ~6 times faster than the Warp Bubble and only requiring 78 energy to activate, the design screen lists the hyperdrive energy usage to attain 12500 hyper speed as the 132 energy required for the Warp Bubble Generator. I don't know if that's true operationally, but it is what the design screen lists as required. This also means that there is relatively little point in mixing the 'efficient' Calista-Dal drive with the faster Equinox or faster initiation Kaldos drives, as the Kaldos has the highest energy requirement of the three drives and the Equinox has a higher top speed (meaning that Calista-Dal + Kaldos has no advantages and at least one disadvantage over Equinox + Kaldos); additionally, the Calista-Dal has at best a marginally faster (by 1 second) jump initiation than the Equinox, assuming equal upgrade levels for the two drives, so in combination with the fact that the Equinox is not much more energy-efficient than the Kaldos there's little reason to play with Calista-Dal + Equinox instead of Kaldos + Equinox or just a single hyperdrive.

Hmmm if there was some way to lock the warp init time you could make a wormhole drive... Just have a really high init time and somehow limit it..
