FingNewGuy -> Resupply Under Fire (5/10/2014 12:54:05 AM)

I have several fleets blockading well-garrisoned enemy planets in several different systems. Its a 15x15 map so there are some distances involved. The blockading fleets have been at it for a while (waiting for me to get my redesigned transports into action) so fuel is now running low. Question:

*Is it a) gutsy (worth the risk) or b)stupid to bring resupply ships into systems with blockades in progress. Note- enemy space activity in the blockaded systems is relatively low, and based on that threat I would send the resupplys in. My question really boils down to how much of a priority target are resupply ships to the AI?

P.S. No, I have not yet had occasion to use resupply ships yet. I just have not. Thanks for any answers.

As long as you have local space superiority, I would not worry about it at all; I'd be willing to entertain the idea even if I only had local space parity and thought I would be able to improve that to local superiority or supremacy. If the computer decides to try to snipe your resupply ship, well, you have at least one fleet right there in the system, and since resupply ships tend to have strong defenses and are usually reasonably well armed, your blockade groups should have plenty of time to respond to hostiles attacking the resupply ship. If it makes you feel more secure, give it a drive that initiates quickly (Kaldos is good for this) and assign it an escort squadron.

An alternative is to find a nearby gas cloud or unoccupied star system that has the appropriate fuel type (preferably as a pure source), and use that as your refueling point. In some ways, this is more risky, because you don't have a large fleet commitment in very close proximity, so if the computer does stumble upon the resupply ship it becomes a little more difficult to protect, but on the other hand the computer isn't guaranteed to know where the ship is, or even that it's present. Be aware that long-range scanners, stolen operations maps, and deep-cover agents can reveal the presence of your ship even if nothing makes a stop in the system or gas cloud you hid it in, and these will also allow the computer to know whether or not there are currently other warships accompanying the resupply ship.

Thank you very much! Exactly what I needed to know. [:)]

Duke's Fleet attacking an indeterminate but enormous number of Klingon freighters.
