There's a semi-active Vassal community that play's AH's Third Reich, mostly by email but vassal works live. Of course with Vassal there's no rules control like MWiF.

As an avid 3R player, I found the PC version pretty easy to beat, so much so that I don't even bother with the whole DOSBox thing. Patch 1.38 still had some fatal flaws: every once in a while if you're playing the Allies, the Axis won't capture Paris--they just take every other hex, surround the city and sit patiently for the Russians to attack. Then when the US enters, it takes Paris. Some bizarre or ghost AIO option I guess.

I just got AH 3rd Reich PC running on my new Windows 8.1 machine today. The only way I could get this old 16 bit application running on my new 64 bit machine was under dosbox. But; I have it running like a charm.

I now have three Grand Strategy WW2 games installed and playing: MWiF, CEaW GS and AH 3rd Reich PC. Well, actually I also have Strategic Command 2 (SC2); but haven't really played it much since I bought 5 - 6 years ago.

So as I mentioned in the last post I now have a 20-year old 16 bit game running on my new 64-bit Windows 8.1 PC using DOSBox. Working in DOSBox does bring back fond(?) memories of the good old days in computing. By the way, working is DOS back then was leaps and bounds ahead of when I first started working with computers. Back then, we used card decks. [:)]

Setup for Case White. We've come a long way in 20 years. Thank goodness for MWiF!

Centuur -> RE: 3rd Reich (8/3/2014 6:45:04 PM)

The first Third Reich game I've bought was build for the Commodore 128, I believe... That was a long time ago...

I didn't realize there every was one built for the Commodore. I thought the 1994 PC version was the only computer adaption of AH's 3rd Reich. What year was the Commodore version?

You might want to tell DOSbox to change the screen resolution of DOSbox to give you a bigger window. See the DOSbox wiki for instructions on how to do that. (You have to change a line in you .conf file.)

I already did. Great minds must think alike. [8D]

DOSBox and the game fill up the entire screen on the biggest of my two monitors, which is widescreen (can't remember the exact specifications).

Did you know that Ctrl-F5 makes and saves a screenshot as a png file? In the same configuration file where you can adjust the screen size, you can also change where the screenshot is saved. You can also just let it save to the default location too.

This map brings up a question about WiF. (MWiF just copies WiF here.) Why is Lodz where it is? If one takes a look at a 1939 map of Poland, Lodz is almost exactly half way between the German border and Warsaw. In WiF, it is one quarter of the way to the border. Note that the people who did the 3R map put Lodz on the border!

Interesting. Look where Lodz is in CEaW-GS. It's half way between Warsaw and the Polish border.
