By the way, Major, did you happen to receive any word from Matrix or Slitherine?

Negative, sad to say.
No further correspondence since Messrs. McNeil and Rutins replied on May 19th.

My god, hrethgar, are you and Wodin collaborating on a SP:WaW erotic novel? Enough, I can't take it anymore! [:D]

Yeah .... there's some sweet, sweet wargamer porn being created right there. To bad that it's apparently not reaching the proper audience.

Fighting the good fight.

I think all these posts do is make us feel good about ourselves for a little while, and then it's back to square one, and we all sound like petulant whiners. A vicious circle.

Do we deserve an upgraded SP:WaW? I think we do, especially when we'd all be willing to drop cash on it.

I've been given very vague, ambiguous answers to the question from Slitherine staff (no one at Matrix even bothers answering).

We should probably just give it up.

sami heimola -> RE: Matrix / Slitherine - Opportunity Knocks (7/25/2014 11:18:55 AM)

But we can even create little "pressure" about upgrading SPWAW, can't we[:'(]?

rwenstrup -> RE: Matrix / Slitherine - Opportunity Knocks (7/25/2014 12:16:45 PM)

With the flood of 'greenlight' and 'kickstarter' games out there it is amazing to me that a game with as much popularity as Steel Panthers has never been updated. Considering that the free release of Steel Panthers was the reason Matrix Games was propelled into the lead wargamers website it makes it even more extraordinary.

In my past I was a business manager for a major electronics firm. In our time we became the leading supplier for our key product. The reason for our success was that we continued to improve upon our core product when others changed to the 'newer' and 'popular' product concepts. By listening to our customers, and prioritizing our development efforts based upon their input, we ended up being the most successful company in our area.

Why Matrix Games has not acted on the demand for an upgraded Steel Panthers mystifies me. This is clearly one of the most demanded games ... and there are a number of programmers who need work. Why not do a Matrix 'Kickstart' and let the gaming community fund the development? If there is not enough money...then you know the endless comments in the forum asking for an update is only a few fanatics...

If there is no intention to update the game it would probably be a good idea to make a clear announcement and be done with it...as sad as that would be...

Matrix Games has been a great company...I for one hope they continue to be...

KG Erwin -> RE: Matrix / Slitherine - Opportunity Knocks (7/27/2014 6:35:23 PM)

Part of the problem might be in who actually owns the game code? I really have no idea. Every update since version 8.403 has been done by the fans themselves.

I still believe that the game needs to be rewritten from the ground up. Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but the game code IS about 11 years old, right? I don't even know if Michael Wood or any of the other programmers even retained a copy of it.

Falcon1 -> RE: Matrix / Slitherine - Opportunity Knocks (7/30/2014 10:09:28 PM)

oops wrong thread :)

This is probably how Matrix/Slitherine view us -

Guys this game was developed a long time ago and for older operating system. It is still a great game and we still have a lot of people happy to pay the price. However we are not in a position to update the old code to bring it to newer operating systems as its more work than creating a full new game because the code base is sol old and patched.

That's not to say Steel Panthers is a dead end, but that we don't have any plans to do a OS upgrade for the old version.

It is also not a game you can just throw any developers at to do a remake. To make a real Steel Panthers game you need a real Steel Panthers team and there are not many of those available.

I bet Mike Wood could do it, at least get it to where the colors load right and that artillery 'BUG" is gone
That would do wonders just doing that.
Plus, the team is out here, many of us worked on this game for years on our own time

mkr8683 -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (10/19/2014 10:12:42 PM)

Sounds like little more than a patch. But even that would be welcome.

Major_Mess -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (10/20/2014 12:15:53 AM)

Guys,

We gotta work with what we have.
As I see it, there are two issues here that have crippled this game. (technical issues my cynical friends [:)], let's not look elsewhere right this moment, OK? Lots of time for that to be discussed later)

1. XP is EOL and Win 7 makes it go all goofy.
2. She don't like multi-core processors.

IMHO, trying to get this game to work on a Win 7 box is a waste of time and effort. I know it can be done, there are workarounds, sorta, but ...

However ... Windows 8.1, along with an itty-bitty .cmd file = [8D]
NO Arty Screen issues.
Colors as they should be.

Everything works.

Now .... if only there was an updated Enhanced version (loaded with ENH Scenarios and Campaigns annnnnd lots more Maps and Tools and even more) available for download.

News to follow soon.

Soon to be Retired, with loooooooooooooooooooots of time on my hands.

Yours truly

MM

Count me in if you need any new unit icons. I'll let Tracer handle the terrain graphics [:D]

Please do! This is a great game that needs some maintenance work to take advantage of hardware/software advances over the last few years. One of my favorite games of all time.

KG Erwin -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (1/27/2015 2:50:37 AM)

Well, I'm glad to see that our interest has had some effect after all. I'm done some tweaking to the USMC OOB, so maybe I can get this included in any update.

What I've desired for many years has been an "Old Breed" Mega-Campaign, featuring the battles of the 1st Marine Division from 1942-45. This would include Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa. It would be a big project, surpassing even "Screaming Eagles" in its scope. It's too bad that Bill Wilder has retired, as this would have been his crowning achievement.

Alternatively, and a bit simpler, you could consider doing a Mini-Campaign about the Marine Raiders, which would last just from 1942 to early 1944. This could include the invasion of Tulagi and the Battle of Bloody Ridge in 1942 and a few other operations in which they performed missions that they were intended for.

Matt R -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (1/27/2015 4:26:09 AM)

Hear hear - more Mega Campaigns would be very welcome. I'd like to see MCs for US 1st Armored, German Grossdeutschland and 501st sPzAbt, Belarusian partisans, and any Italian armored unit from the Spanish Civil War to the armistice.

Again.. TAKE MY FRIGGIN' MONEY!!!

Dude, you consider it.

You have all the tools you need right in front of you.
Damn, you've got half the task completed with your knowledge of them dumb Gyrenes. [:)]
Any Q's that you can't source out, ask.
It ain't that hard, making a campaign is all laid out in the manual.

Grab a pencil and a big piece of paper.
Storyboard that campaign that you have in your head. Every chapter, with results good/bad, in detail. Then make it an interesting tale. A heroic journey. Beware WBW's warnings, don't make it huge! Small engagements in a big theater is OK fine.

That's first up. Job One. It all hangs off of this work.

But remember Gunnie, dem Marines ain't the heros in this little story. They are just the ones that survived. Most of them. Not like those other guys. And it coulda gone waaaay different. All could have changed due to a different course of events. Just like every other conflict since forever.
So it's got to be balanced, sorta. But tilted towards the CO at the keyboard.

After you've got all that paperwork sorted out, the rest is easy.

Combatants. Pfffft. I think you got that covered.
Maps. You need maps.
Building each node is easy, just follow the story. Paint the picture (red team vs blue team) on the canvas (the map that's been made).

It's one step at a time man.
Do some groundwork, make some headway. Show people what you're doing.
Ask questions. Who knows, you might get some help.

Learn new skills.

What else are you doing right now?

What does SEMPER FI mean?

cheers

MM

Agreed. The game itself can use a few minor tweeks to update it but basically nothing should be done to fix the original concept. Play is relatively simple which makes the game a joy. The game engine is deceptively complex which makes the game a joy. Sounds, graphics and OOB's can all use some TLC, however this is not the time to reinvent the game itself.
My one wish is to make the Mega-Campaign editor available to all users so that more Mega-Campaigns can be produced.

Matt R -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (1/29/2015 3:39:31 AM)

Agreed on that. I've been so intrigued about the Steel Tigers project for so long that I guess at first blush, I thought MG was going to rehabilitate it.

This may surprise you, but I actually disagree about the MC editor being available to the public. If MG would pick it up again and milk that cash cow for all it's worth, we would have some well-researched, well laid-out MCs that have the proper time and attention devoted to them by professionals (not that we amateurs are incapable of such - see Das Reich and Russian Steel, for example). If support for the game was officially dropped by them, though, I'd favor releasing the editor.

Matt R -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (1/29/2015 9:19:52 PM)

IMO, the best course of action, barring any legal entanglements, would be to adopt the Enhanced OBs, replace the unit icons that belong to another WW2 game, tweak the minor issues, expand anything that will fit (such as engineers with bridging capabilities, ARVs that actually remove disabled vehicles, fuel ratings for vehicles, (eh, eh? [:)]), expand the color palette, give the terrain icons a facelift, and start cranking out Mega Campaigns again, while updating the existing ones.

PM sent. Thanks for seeking input.

rwenstrup -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (1/30/2015 1:12:20 AM)

This is fantastic news!!! Been hoping for some positive movement for years. Just finished the Screaming Eagles campaign last night...

Mega Campaigns is the DLC magnet...I would concentrate on creating a quick and easy campaign editor...for internal use. The OOBs, maps, etc. can all use a brush-up...but the campaigns will be where the money is...

Let the market make scenarios...make money on the campaigns...

...that way we can have a stream of game improvements, scenarios, and campaigns...and Matrix can make a string of income.

Whatever you decide...I hoping this is a really successful effort!

This is great news, hopefully more comes out of this than with TOAW...

Hopefully, more have responded to Eric's invitation then I see here on this thread who say they will contact him. I can't contribute with talent but I will do my part in a purchase.

Rodwonder -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (2/5/2015 4:51:40 PM)

I'm very interested... I have a half a dozen scenario designs for WW2 and I could make many more for WaW...

Riitaoja -> RE: Matrix / Slitherene - Opportunity Knocks (2/5/2015 5:51:44 PM)

"Future of SPWAW"... That was the wording so I assume the idea is to make one more patch for the current game.

I guess I would be more interested in hearing what Matrix Games thinks about the future of SPWAW. It would seem pretty obvious what people would want. A whole new Steel Panthers game that would include some new features that were not possible to do with the old game code.

In any case I did send a message to Erik with information regarding the current issues of SPWAW running on Windows 7 and multi core processors.
