I'm familiar with the idea of the stay behinds, it just seems that given the bolt out of the blue nature of the attack and the rapid advance of the Red Army that NATO would have to put these guys in their pre-positioned dugouts and hiding spots awfully quick. So I assumed that this would be part of a escalating tension war scenario. Ever hear of the 'Gladio' scandal? NATO was supposedly coordinating with some really nasty people (read: Neo-Nazis) as part of the stay behinds. Ugly stuff... considering that the FRG was bound by it's constitution to arrest and suppress these people, not play footsy with them
