Malorn -> Feature Request: Basic Values (5/24/2014 12:17:11 PM)

All the great new modding features in universe are great, but there is something missing.

Would it be possible to expose some of the basic values of the game mechanics. Population growth rates, colony incomes, maximum population, ship maintenance, ship costs. All of those things would be wonderful to alter and mess with. Any hope of seeing them?

From the past info - nope, the game mechanics are not/will not be moddable in DW. Whether someone from Slitherine will share how the in-game stuff works in terms of formulas etc. is another matter (hopefully?), some of it was already "deciphered" by some players from studying games etc.

But the answer to the base question is "no", as DW was never created with full modding support from the start.

That's rather sad, and very limiting in certain ways. A pity they won't reconsider, though my knowledge of programming is hardly complete so perhaps there are barriers I'm not aware of. Exposing those values would allow some very interesting changes which would hopefully benefit the entire community.

So, I leave it as an open request, though I'm quite aware they didn't indicate that Universe would have it. Is this something others would be interesting in having? And have the devs clearly stated anywhere that exposing these values would be impossible?

In short, thank you for the answer, but I'm hoping the devs might change their minds. Anyone else?

What was stated was that things going into the "modding" area were things like resources, races, ship designs, policies, graphics etc. Things that you can use to tailor your DW game to a different story, universe, look etc. So conversely, things that could alter the base DW mechanics would not be touched.

It would take too much effort to make the internals of the game properly moddable (for such a small studio) and even to secure that everything would be somehow balanced afterwards (when players would mess with internal things).

Here's hopin' for DW2 to begin development with such things in mind already...
