hb921 -> Are modern torpedoes that perfect? (5/28/2014 12:03:59 PM)

It is not bug report. I am interested in opinions of knowlegable people on this forum.

The questions:
is hit probability of torpedo independent of target size? Is it as easy to hit 7m rhib, as VLCC?
is hit probability of torpedo independent of target speed? Is it as easy to hit target doing 30+ knots as stationary?
is hit probability of torpedo independent of target evasive action? Do last moment change of course/speed have no impact on probability?
is hit probability, especially for surface targets, not affected by sea state? Surface noice at high sea state don't complicate homing?

Some explanation/assumptions - I assume, that in all cases, launching platform was able to detect target (signature matters for detection), obtain and keep solution (again, signature matters). I asume that target was unable to outrun torpedo - if was able to outrun speed obviously matters. The questions are only about impact of various circumstances on endgame.

I am aware, that there is very little data (especially unclassified - one can wonder if classified data are much better on the subject) to form an opinion - not a lot torpedos were fired in anger since WWII. That is why I am asking this questions - if answer is obvious, there is no reason to ask.

Best Regards

Will need to check the code, but from memory target size is only taken into account for straight-runners.

Can't remember but do not think so. It might be there for straight-runners, Dimitris spent a fair amount of time on that bit.

Not currently, although we'd like to improve the torpedo model in the future.

Not currently.

With the caveats that this anecdotal (and I'm a noob - but a reasonably knowledgeable one)... in one of the scenarios (Spain V Morocco I thin...), I patiently crept a modern era SS in on a frigate & firing fm only about 2-3 kyd - should've fired 2, but didn't want interference) and modern frigate (AI) successfully evades and I miss, then hide. Realistic? Perhaps. Monte Carlo dice roll? Mebbe. But torps don 't seem a 'gimme' even when fired close. Happy to miss? No. Happy with game AI not handing me 'gimmes'? VERY. Well done to the AI coders. Regards, Bob W Bristol RI, US

Thanks for answer. In sim at Build 521 guided torpedos are not affected by size or speed.

In RL modern torpedo seekers are very smart. But are they so smart, that it doesn't mater if target is Fat, Dumb, and Happy VLCC proceeding at cruise speed (a lot of noise to home in pasive mode), or stationary rhib (no noise to home on in passive mode, and cross section for active seeker not much bigger than big fish)? I don't claim I know answer - I wouldn't ask a question if I knew. But common sense suggest that targets in above example are quite different challenges for the seeker.

Yes we know. Torps should not be capable against LCACs either. Will expand the model in the future [8D]

Great news. I will wait for next release.

just FYI... they said the future.... not the next release, so you might need to give them a little more time.
