The third place match is a money grab. One more game to sell tickets and TV rights. While teams may be happy to finish in the top four, they, to a man do not go there to finish third. You can tell by the responses over the years that once they lose in the semifinal, the tournament is over since they no longer have a chance win the cup.

Players with injuries that would not keep them out the final will not play. In Germany(do not know about other countries) it is tradition to play the backup goalie. That is what type of game it is. That is why Robben and Van Gaal do not want to play.

Did they drop this by any chance?

After having lost the chance to reach the main event, I would guess most players just want to move on. Being forced to play for a 3rd place I agree is ridiculous.

Zap -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/11/2014 4:43:46 PM)

The players are paid for their appearances in the consolation game? If so then its not too bad then. Though I agree, its played more for the money FIFA will make then the desire of the fans to see who takes 3rd place

justadude -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/11/2014 4:51:00 PM)

What does FIFA stand for? Non-profit money making machine

I think van Gaal was missing his bottle of Vodka.

warspite1 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/12/2014 9:52:57 PM)

Its difficult to believe what I'm witnessing to be honest....

In Fred, Hulk, Jo, Marcelo, Luiz (one goal aside) and Paulinho, Brazil must have 6 of the worst players of any squad in the tournament. The defence is just plain shocking, the midfield is largely non-existent (although Oscar has not played badly in this game) and there is no strike force worthy of the name. Brazil seem to rely so much on long balls out of defence or pumped into the box - this is NOT the Brazil most of us know......

warspite1 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 7:54:52 PM)

Argentina 0-0 Germany

What a great game! Plenty of action, disallowed goals, woodwork, some feisty challenges and great goal keeping.

Definitely going to be a red card in the second half - my money is on Rojo [:)]

shunwick -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 8:05:28 PM)

A most enjoyable first half with both teams wanting to play football.

Best wishes,
Steve

Hee Hee. Quality commentating just now. 3 - 4 bodies go down in a melee in the Argentine box.... Cue the commentator:

"it's just like Beecher's Brook" [8D] Qualiteeeee

shunwick -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 8:58:38 PM)

Well, extra time and still very tight. The World Cup is up for grabs by whichever team wants to grab it.

Best wishes,
Steve

warspite1 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:13:05 PM)

Everyone is looking tired........

shunwick -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:16:22 PM)

It's always a long tournament at the end of the season, in the heat, then add in the pressure and it takes its toll.

Best wishes,
Steve

warspite1 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:22:33 PM)

Hope it's not a mistake that settles this.

Argentina are lucky to have 11 men on the pitch [X(] Mascherano and Aguero should be gone [:-]

shunwick -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:25:45 PM)

warspite1 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:37:17 PM)

Congratulations to Germany [&o]

shunwick -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 9:37:19 PM)

S'all over! Germany are the new World Champions.

Another entertaining game in a World Cup that has been one of the most entertaining that I remember. Congratulations to Germany. And if there was a goal worthy of winning the World Cup, it was that one. Superb goal.

Best wishes,
Steve

A great goal by Sokrates to win that one.

Best wishes,
Steve

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/13/2014 10:34:28 PM)

Germany is a worthy winner [:)]

Any team can win in these finals so fair play.

And now two more years and 2016 Euro Cup in France? And of course Russia WC 2018 [8D]

justadude -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/14/2014 12:15:49 AM)

Germany owes a lot to Klinsmann. He came in and put in the foundation that lead to Germany winning their four title. A big part of that was reorganizing the youth programs. This is something he is calling for in the US as well.

... i am exausted , 120 min nailbitting, wining against the Argentine (and partly also the Italian Referee) was a bit to much for my nerves ...just back from the Autokorso [:D]

...and now i can start with the drinking [:)]

Zap -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/14/2014 4:25:19 AM)

Well I can't believe I watched the whole match! But my wife is Mexican and she wanted Argentine to win.
But you known something, the game kept my interest. Both teams were actively attacking and giving their all.

My goodness the Germans were so precise in their passes and attack. It was a beautiful thing to watch.

@Tullius Detritus, your analysis of the low scoring matches was precise and balanced. thanks for that.

What you said "So you can have a match with two teams that try to win their match. These are -to me- the best matches. It's like the flow of a river. But despite these many non-stop attacks, maybe the strikers miss all their chances or the goalkeepers stop everything they throw at them.

Is pretty much what happened in the Championship match between Ger.and Arg. Though Argentina did have a great chance to score at least twice but failed.

No big deal. I was describing what I witnessed many many times [:)]

For all I care, football should use some of the American dynamism. I have mentioned basketball. Things like the 24 seconds and illegal defence rules do encourage (if I well understood) a fast pace ergo more attacks ergo offensive play. In the end spectators, fans, supporters are happy and that's what really matters.

Anyway, there is problem that needs to be solved. If I well understood the NBA teams have more or less the same budget or close. This means the teams are more or less on the same level. But in football... [sm=00000622.gif] You have mega-rich teams vs mega-poor teams... If you force the weak to attack (LOL) their much more superior opponent will put them to the sword. In other words, what works for basketball might not work for football. Dilemma dilemma.

wings7 -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/14/2014 2:49:10 PM)

Great final! The German's looked tough and controlled much of the game.

Patrick

Kanov -> RE: Most Unofficial Brazil 2014 World Cup Thread (7/14/2014 3:57:43 PM)

Yes I thought it was a very good game.

In the end the best team won, great goal by Mario Goetze.

Messi? more like Missi. Don't get why FIFA gave MVP to him, what a joke.
